Effects of adaptive error-threshold practice on soccer instep kick learning.

This study examined the effects of contextual interference and algorithmic practice with 33% or 44% error thresholds on learning the soccer instep kick in novice participants. Seventy-one inexperienced students (18-25 years) were randomly assigned to Blocked, Random, algorithmic 33%, algorithmic 44%, or control groups. After pre-testing, practice involved 324 trials over two days from 5, 6, and 7 m distances. Algorithmic groups began with blocked practice and progressed to serial or random structures based on accuracy thresholds (≥ 67% for 33%; ≥ 56% for 44%). Blocked and random groups practic

Psychological impairments after ACL injury - Do we know what we are addressing? Experiences from sports physical therapists.

Psychological impairments can follow an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury and can impact the rehabilitation process. Our aim was to investigate experiences of sports physical therapists (PTs) in addressing psychological impairments in patients after ACL injury. We conducted four focus group interviews with fourteen sports PTs. The PTs' experiences of working with psychological impairments after ACL injury were summarized in four main categories: (1) "Calling for a guiding light", where PTs stated that the most common method of acquiring knowledge on addressing psychological impairments w

From Evidence to Practice: Implementing the 2026 Canadian Clinical Practice Guideline Update on Vaccination-Related Distress in the Dutch National Immunization Program.

Vaccination-related distress (VRD) encompasses a range of stress reactions associated with vaccination, including pain, needle fear, and stress. VRD is a significant barrier to immunization, contributing to up to 8% of vaccination refusals in children and even higher rates in under-vaccinated populations. Beyond immediate discomfort, VRD can lead to long-term psychological and physical consequences, underscoring the need for effective VRD-mitigation strategies. The updated knowledge synthesis and clinical practice guideline by the HELPinKids&Adults team provides evidence-based recommendations

Clinical social work in a medical setting.

This paper, using case vignette and discussion, will elaborate on two specific functions of the clinical social worker practicing in a medical setting. The first, helping patient, family and staff to acknowledge the psychological impact of physical illness; the second is helping a family to accept that there may be no organic etiology for a symptom, and that the symptom may be psychogenic in origin. Barriers to performing these functions are discussed as well as reasons why the social worker is in an ideal position to integrate medical and psychological information into a coherent and practica

Rated casemix of general practitioner referrals to practice counsellors and clinical psychologists: A retrospective survey of a year's caseload.

Although evidence-based guidelines are beginning to be produced as to which psychological therapies might be appropriate for which patients, little is known about how general medical practitioners (GPs) in practice distribute referrals between different psychological therapy services. In a retrospective survey, 19 practice counsellors and 10 clinical psychologists from the same geographical area rated a year's caseload of GP referrals using identical data collection methods. Rated casemix was found to be broadly similar, although practice counsellors rated relationship and bereavement problems

The psychology of fear of flying (part II): a critical evaluation of current perspectives on approaches to treatment.

This is the second of a two part review which critically evaluates research published in disparate sources into the psychological treatment of fear of flying. Part I established fear of flying as a complex heterogeneous clinical phenomenon. This paper discusses the way in which evidence from clinical trials translates to best practice in treating fear of flying. Published research on psychological interventions uses terminology which bears a close resemblance to cognitive behavioural therapy. It is, however, questionable whether some treatment approaches reflect the implementation of the cogni

Sleep Quality Mediates the Relationship Between Sleep Hygiene and Psychological Stress Among Adults With Multiple Cardiovascular Risk Factors.

BACKGROUND: Poor sleep quality and psychological stress are interrelated and disproportionately affect adults with multiple cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors. Maintaining an optimal home environment and engaging in healthy bedtime behaviors are important components of sleep hygiene practices that influence sleep health and mental well-being. However, research is scarce in exploring the associations between sleep hygiene, sleep quality, and psychological stress among adults with multiple CVD risk factors. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 300 adults diagnosed with hyp

Navigating Uncertainty.

Uncertainty is defined as the conscious awareness, or the subjective experience, of ignorance. Typically but not always experienced as an emotionally negative phenomenon, individuals possess and can improve a set of psychological responses known as uncertainty tolerance to engage uncertainty as opportunity. This is particularly important for leaders navigating organizational change. Unlike articles that describe diagnostic uncertainty in radiologic practice, this work focuses on the underpinnings of neurobiology, psychology, and stress responses to uncertainty in efforts to promote a new appro

An Integrative Bio-Psycho-Social Theory of Anorexia Nervosa.

UNLABELLED: The need for novel approaches to understanding and treating anorexia nervosa (AN) is well recognized. The aim of this paper is to describe an integrative bio-psycho-social theory of maintaining factors in AN. We took a triangulation approach to develop a clinically relevant theory with face validity and internal consistency. We developed theoretical ideas from our clinical practice and reviewed theoretical ideas within the eating disorders and wider bio-psycho-social literature. The synthesis of these ideas and concepts into a clinically meaningful framework is described here. We s

The social cognition and object relations scale is reliable, valid, and ethical in clinical practice and research: Comment on Sinclair et al. (2023).

Narrative assessment procedures have a rich tradition in psychology and have been widely employed for clinical and research purposes. The Thematic Apperception Test (TAT; Murray, 1943) and the Social Cognition and Object Relations Scale-Global Rating Method (SCORS-G) have been widely used for eliciting and coding narratives for psychological assessment. Recently, a critical review by Sinclair et al. (2023) asserted that there is insufficient evidence for the use of the SCORS-G in clinical settings, calling for a moratorium on its use. However, their critical review was limited in scope, did no

Manifestation of anxiety and depression among pediatric patients with psoriasis: A review.

Psoriasis is a chronic, inflammatory skin disorder with manifestations extending beyond visual presentation to encompass psychological burden. Though the association between psoriasis and mental health disorders in adults is widely accepted, there is inadequate research to generalize these findings to pediatric populations. In this review of the literature, we discuss the prevalence of anxiety and depression among pediatric patients with psoriasis in hopes of raising awareness of these associations and advocating for psychological screening and intervention in dermatology practice.

A qualitative study of the psychosocial and health consequences associated with lymphedema among women in the Dominican Republic.

To date, few studies have addressed the sequelae of lymphatic filariasis, a mosquito-transmitted disease, on the quality of life of affected women in the Americas. In this qualitative study, we conducted 28 semi-structured interviews and 3 focus groups of women with lymphedema or elephantiasis of the leg living in filariasis-endemic areas of the Dominican Republic. Women in our study described a spectrum of consequences associated with their lymphedema but physical, functional, and psychological limitations were not always associated with severity of lymphedema. Data suggests that management f
