Histopathological examination, positive Treponema pallidum particle agglutination (TPPA), a rapid plasma reagin (RPR) titer of 1:32, and subsequent resolution post-treatment collectively confirmed a diagnosis of secondary syphilis.

The author compares the occurrence of rhesus phenotypes CC, Cc and cc in a group of 437 children presenting a reaginic respiratory allergy in function of family antecedents. In children with no family histories of respiratory allergy there exists a significant increase in the frequency of the phenotype cc. The mechanism by which rhesus factors act in respiratory allergy is not known.

Absorption of canine reaginic serum with anti-human IgE resulted in a substantial reduction in PK titre to ragweed. Anti-human IgE was also effective in eliciting reversed cutaneous anaphylaxis in the dog. This is conclusive evidence of antigenic similarity of canine and human IgE. The immunoelectrophoretic identification of canine IgE is described.

The studies reported here demonstrated that adult chickens, when immunized with bovine serum albumin, respond with the production of serum antibodies which will mediate passive cutaneous anaphylactic (PCA) reactions in 10-day-old chicks but not in adults. This difference is at least in part due to differences in histamine sensitivity between chicks and adults. The molecule responsible for this PCA activity was indistinguishable from the predominant 7S chicken immunoglobulin antigenically and by a combination of gel filtration on Sephadex G-200 and ion exchange chromatography on DEAE-cellulose.

A "reverse sequence syphilis screening" algorithm is widely used for syphilis testing. This retrospective study showed that most (65%) pregnant women with discordant screening results (treponemal multiplex flow immunoassay IgG+/rapid plasma reagin-) had a nonreactive confirmatory Treponema pallidum-particle agglutination assay, likely indicative of a false-positive reaction.

The patient, a 55 year-old man, developed an episode of transient global amnesia. He was a smoker and had hypercholesterolemia. He was found to have a positive rapid plasma reagin test and high levels of anticardiolipin antibodies. Other investigations were negative. The presence in this patient of antiphospholipid antibodies suggests a vascular mechanism for transient global amnesia.

A rapid plasma reagin (RPR) test was performed in fifty patients with a clinical diagnosis of pityriasis rosea to determine the frequency of syphilis as the underlying cause of the eruption. In none of the fifty patients was syphilis the cause. Experience in diagnosing skin diseases, frequency of syphilis in the community served, and the characteristics of the individual eruption are important factors in the decision to perform an RPR test.

An antibody of known specificity and active in long (72 hours) latent period passive cutaneous anaphylactic reactions, was isolated and partially purified from bovine serum. This antibody was not associated with immunoglobulins IgG, IgM or IgA. A rabbit antiserum raised against this antibody and used as an immunoabsorbent, successfully recovered skin sensitising antibody from bovine reaginic serum.

Four infants (one singleton and a set of triplets) born to mothers with serofast reactive plasma reagin at 1:4 to 1:8 were found to have congenital syphilis. We describe 4 patients (age, >50 years) with secondary syphilis. All patients presented with ocular syphilis, and 2 presented with syphilis-negative rapid plasma reagin titers due to a prozone phenomenon. Three male patients reported sildenafil use. The presentation of these patients with ocular syphilis suggests the need for additional clinical studies involving older patients.

We aimed to determine if rapid treponemal tests intended for whole-blood specimens could be used to detect treponemal antibody in oral fluid. An isolated cranial nerve VI palsy is a rare initial manifestation of undiagnosed neurosyphilis. A 33-year-old male presented with a one month history of progressive headache and diplopia. Neurologic examination only revealed an isolated abducens palsy on the left. Cranial imaging was unremarkable. A woman presented to the hospital due to postcoital vaginal bleeding. The patient was initially diagnosed with cervical carcinoma by clinicians at a local hospital. However, a biopsy of the cervical lesions revealed chronic inflammation and erosion of the cervical mucosa, and the rapid plasma reagin ratio titer was 1:256. The patient was eventually diagnosed with syphilitic cervicitis and treated with minocycline 0.1g twice a day. The patient was cured with this treatment.
