Characteristics of peripheral refractive errors of myopic and non-myopic Chinese eyes.

Interest in peripheral refractive errors has increased as it was hypothesized that peripheral hypermetropia might provide a stimulus for axial elongation (Smith et al., 2005), this study was to determine relative peripheral refractive errors (RPRE) of the eyes of a group of Chinese children and adults. Central and peripheral (20 degrees , 30 degrees , 40 degrees at nasal, temporal, superior and inferior meridians of retina) refractive errors were obtained from cyclopleged eyes of 40 children and 42 adults with a Shin-Nippon auto-refractor. Only right eyes were considered. Central spherical equ

Monocular diplopia due to spherocylindrical refractive errors (an American Ophthalmological Society thesis).

PURPOSE: Ordinary spherocylindrical refractive errors have been recognized as a cause of monocular diplopia for over a century, yet explanation of this phenomenon using geometrical optics has remained problematic. This study tests the hypothesis that the diffraction theory treatment of refractive errors will provide a more satisfactory explanation of monocular diplopia. METHODS: Diffraction theory calculations were carried out for modulation transfer functions, point spread functions, and line spread functions under conditions of defocus, astigmatism, and mixed spherocylindrical refractive er

Correction of large amblyopiogenic refractive errors in children using the excimer laser.

PURPOSE: We sought to determine whether laser subepithelial keratomileusis (LASEK) and photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) are effective methods for correcting amblyopiogenic refractive errors in children. METHODS: Thirty-six eyes in 35 amblyopic children, who ranged in age from 4 to 16 years (mean, 8.4 years), received treatment for large magnitude ametropia. Seventy-two percent (25/35) of the children had a neurobehavioral disorder and/or were noncompliant with spectacle or contact lens wear. Myopia ranged from -3.25 to -24.25 D (mean, -11.48 D); one patient had hyperopia of +5.87 D. Correcti

Distribution of refractive errors in albinos and persons with idiopathic congenital nystagmus.

We compared retrospectively the distribution of refractive errors in a sample of adolescent and adult albinos (n = 19) with that in persons with idiopathic congenital nystagmus (CN) (n = 46), whose eye movements are similar to those of albinos but whose visual acuity is better. The distribution of spherical-equivalent refractive errors is more broadly distributed and slightly less myopic in albinos than in persons with idiopathic CN. On average, albinos also have more astigmatism (primarily with-the-rule), than persons with idiopathic CN. Unlike the leptokurtic distribution of refractive error

Complex refractive errors in pediatric patients: cause, management, and criteria for success.

BACKGROUND: Uncorrected refractive error in children is an important contributor to permanent neurological visual impairment (amblyopia). Spectacles are often inadequate for certain refractive errors that occur in the pediatric population. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to present the diagnostic and therapeutic considerations of infants and children referred to a hospital specialty contact lens practice during a 30-month period. METHODS: A retrospective cohort design was used to study patients 12 years or younger referred to a hospital-based contact lens service and cared for by the

Modeling method for refraction error compensation in ground object detection.

The refraction error compensation model for ground object detection is established. Firstly, based on a 100-meter interval, the area between the aircraft and the ground objects is stratified, and the Hopfield model of the atmospheric refractive index is combined with the e-index model to achieve an accurate simulation of the atmospheric refractive index profile. Then, based on the information such as the line-of-sight direction, flight altitude, and observation wavelength of the ground object observation target by the aircraft, combined with Snell's law, the distance from the projection of the

Types of refractive errors in a sample of Iraqi children with Intermittent exotropia.

BACKGROUND: One of the most common strabismus types in children is intermittent exotropia (IXE), which predominantly occurs in children between the ages of 2-4 years. It may affect visual development and often coexists with refractive errors. Unlike esotropia, which is typically associated with hyperopia, IXE demonstrates a more complex relationship with refractive errors. Recent studies suggest a possible link with myopia; however, this relationship remains unclear. This study will investigate the prevalence and distribution of refractive errors in children with IXE, challenging the tradition

Comparison of cycloplegic effects of atropine and tropicamide in children with refractive error.

BACKGROUND: Refractive error is the primary cause of vision impairment in children and requires accurate cycloplegic refraction for proper diagnosis and treatment. Various cycloplegic agents are used clinically, but their comparative efficacy remains controversial, particularly across different pediatric age groups and refractive error types. The purpose of this study was to observe the cycloplegic effects of tropicamide and atropine in children of different ages and different refractive errors, and to screen out more suitable drugs for cycloplegia in children with different refractive errors.

Patterns in refractive error and treatment delay in keratoconus-An Australian study.

Keratoconus is the most common primary corneal ectasia and is associated with significant morbidity. In its early stages, keratoconus is often asymptomatic, making the identification of subclinical disease challenging. Refractive error is a parameter that is documented at most routine optometry visits, yet interestingly, changes in refraction of keratoconic patients over time have not yet been studied and compared with the general population. Early diagnosis of keratoconus facilitates timely referral for treatments such as corneal collagen cross-linking, which has been shown to slow disease pr
