Occupational grief and self-compassion among intensive care unit nurses in tertiary hospitals: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Intensive care unit (ICU) nurses frequently encounter patient suffering and death and may develop occupational grief. Evidence on occupational grief and its association with self-compassion among ICU nurses in China remains limited. OBJECTIVE: To describe occupational grief among ICU nurses in tertiary hospitals and examine its relationship with self-compassion. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 355 ICU nurses from nine tertiary hospitals in Shandong, China, were recruited by cluster sampling between January and February 2024. Participants completed a general information qu

[Psychometric Evaluation of a German 12-Item Short Form of the Self-Compassion Scale (SCS-D-KF)].

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was the psychometric evaluation of a German short form of the Self-Compassion Scale (SCS-D-KF). METHOD: Based on the previous German translation of the questionnaire, the 12 items of the English short form were administered to a sample of non-clinical participants (N=386) in an online survey. RESULTS: The SCS-D-KF showed high internal consistency (Cronbach's α=0.89). The total score of the short form correlated very high with the total score of the German long form (r=0.98). Confirmatory factor analysis confirmed both the six-factor model and a hierarchical

Exploring Relations Between Psychological Capital, Social Support and Self-Compassion Among Siblings of Individuals With Developmental Disabilities.

BACKGROUND: We examined correlations between psychological capital (PsyCap), social support and self-compassion among siblings of individuals with developmental disabilities versus siblings of individuals without developmental disabilities. METHODS: We hypothesized that (1) there would be positive correlations between PsyCap, social support and self-compassion at the sample level and within each group; (2) siblings of individuals without developmental disabilities would exhibit lower levels of these variables than siblings of individuals with developmental disabilities; and (3) relations betw

Mindfulness-based self-compassion to enhance ontological well-being in breast cancer survivors: A randomized controlled trial.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of an 8-week mindfulness-based self-compassion program (MBSCP) in enhancing ontological well-being (OWB) among breast cancer survivors. METHODS: A randomized controlled trial was conducted at a university hospital in Türkiye. Seventy-one women with a history of breast cancer were randomized into an intervention group (n = 35) or a control group (n = 36). The intervention group received the MBSCP, while the control group received no additional support. Ontological well-being was measured using the Ontological Well-Being Scale (OWBS) at ba

Perceived social support and self-compassion as serial mediators of relationship between childhood maltreatment and psychological distress.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have consistently found a robust relationship between childhood maltreatment and psychological distress. Despite the increasing number of studies in recent years that have identified social support or self-compassion as potential mechanisms in this relationship, no study examines the mediating role of both social support and self-compassion in adults. AIM: This study aimed to investigate social support and self-compassion as potential mediators in the relationship between childhood maltreatment and psychological distress using a serial mediation model. METHOD: Us

Self-Compassion and Bedtime Procrastination Among Chinese Medical Students: The Serial Mediating Role of Nighttime Media Use.

BACKGROUND: Bedtime procrastination is a widespread sleep problem among university students, particularly medical students, with detrimental effects on physical and mental health. Self-compassion, a positive psychological quality characterized by kindness toward oneself, may serve as a protective factor against sleep-delaying behaviors. METHOD: This cross-sectional study used a convenience sampling method which invited participants to answer a survey through the university's official channels. A total of 743 valid questionnaires were finally included for analysis. The measurement tools used i

Self-compassion promotes positive mental health in women with anorexia nervosa: A two-week daily diary study.

Despite the importance of positive mental health, little is known about its facilitators in people with eating disorders (EDs). Drawing on past research, we hypothesized that self-compassion might be a contributing factor to positive mental health in individuals with EDs. In a two-week daily diary study of women (N = 32) with anorexia nervosa, we investigated whether self-compassion levels-on average, on a given day, and from one day to the next-predicted social safeness (i.e. a sense of social connection and warmth) and positive affect, both indicators of positive mental health. Multilevel mo

The Self-Compassion Scale-Short Form: Psychometric evaluation in one non-clinical and two clinical Swedish samples.

BACKGROUND: Self-compassion has been defined as the ability to be with one's feelings of suffering in a warm and caring way. Research has shown a negative association between self-compassion and mental illness, and that low self-compassion can make psychotherapeutic effects less likely. The ability to measure a patient's self-compassion in a fast and reliable way is therefore important in investigating effects of psychotherapies. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Swedish version of the Self-Compassion Scale-Short Form (SCS-SF) in both non-clinical

Protective factors in borderline personality disorder: A multi-study analysis of conscientiousness, distress tolerance, and self-compassion.

BACKGROUND: Despite a growing literature characterizing risk factors associated with the development and maintenance of borderline personality disorder (BPD), substantially less is known about potentially protective factors in BPD. METHODS: In a sample of online (N = 272) participants with likely BPD, major depressive disorder (MDD), or no disorder (ND) and an independent sample of in-person (N = 90) participants diagnosed with BPD, MDD, or ND, we tested the cross-sectional and longitudinal associations among BPD features and three putatively protective personality, cognitive, and affective-b

Self-compassion induction enhances recovery from social stressors: Comparing adults with social anxiety disorder and healthy controls.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: This study evaluates the process and consequence of inducing self-compassion during recovery from social performance stressors. Though interest in self-compassion as an intervention target is growing, extant findings suggest that initially cultivating self-compassion can be challenging for those with high self-criticism and anxiety, common features of social anxiety disorder (SAD). DESIGN: Quasi-experimental design. METHODS: The current study evaluates the feasibility, content, and outcomes of a brief written self-compassion induction administered after consecutive

Healing through self-kindness: Efficacy of compassion-based intervention in enhancing self-esteem, reducing rumination, and alleviating loneliness in primiparous women with postpartum depression.

Postpartum depression (PPD) is associated with low self-esteem, heightened rumination, and loneliness, which represent key cognitive-emotional vulnerability factors perpetuating symptoms, especially in primiparous women. This randomized controlled trial aimed to evaluate the efficacy of an 8-week group Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT) in enhancing self-esteem and reducing rumination and loneliness among primiparous women diagnosed with PPD. Forty-eight participants in a large city in Iran were randomly allocated to CFT (n = 24) or waitlist control (n = 24) using a pretest-posttest design with

The relationship between shame, rumination, self-compassion, and symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder and major depressive disorder.

Shame and the tendency to ruminate have been linked to the onset and persistence of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). We examined the relationship between shame, current levels of rumination, and a potential protective factor, self-compassion, and symptoms of PTSD and depression among military veterans and active-duty service members (n = 307). Shame and current levels of rumination were both strongly correlated with symptoms of PTSD and depression. Moreover, rumination was a predictor of both symptoms of PTSD and depression and mediated the relationshi

Self-Compassion, Health, and Empowerment: A Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial for Chinese Immigrant Women Experiencing Intimate Partner Violence.

Chinese immigrant survivors of men's violence experience both significant mental health impacts from abuse and barriers to formal services. Therefore, we examined the preliminary efficacy of an innovative mobile-based empowerment-based intervention (self-compassion, health, and empowerment; SHE) that specifically focuses on abused Chinese immigrant women in the US. This pilot study used a two-arm randomized controlled design with repeated measures. A convenience sample (N = 50) of Chinese immigrant women who experienced past year intimate partner violence (IPV) were recruited online and random

A brief compassion focused therapy intervention can help self-critical parents and their children: A randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Parents can be highly self-critical of their own parenting, which can negatively impact parenting style and child outcomes. AIMS: The aim of this randomised controlled trial (RCT) was to examine the efficacy of a brief 2-hour Compassion Focused Therapy intervention (CFT) for parents to determine if it can reduce self-criticism, improve parenting and improve child social, emotional and behavioural outcomes. MATERIALS & METHODS: In total, 102 parents (87 mothers) were randomised to either a CFT intervention (n = 48) or waitlist control group (n = 54). Participants were measured at

The predictive value of self-compassion for psychological adjustment in left ventricular assist device patients: an observational study.

AIMS: Implantation of a left ventricular assist device (LVAD) is an established treatment option for patients with advanced heart failure. However, apart from its challenging medical management, it comes with serious psychological implications. Empirical evidence suggests that self-compassion, a self-regulation strategy for countering negative self-directed emotions, might be a promising approach in facilitating psychological adjustment also in LVAD patients. The aims of the present study were to investigate self-compassion as a protective factor for anxiety and depressive symptoms, to test wh

Buffering against Depressive Symptoms: Associations between Self-Compassion, Perceived Family Support and Age for Transgender and Nonbinary Individuals.

Transgender and gender nonbinary (TGNB) individuals often report higher levels of depression compared to cisgender individuals. Higher levels of depression in TGNB populations may be partially attributed to a lack of family support, which may be particularly salient for younger individuals. However, two possible protective factors that may mitigate depressive symptoms are self-compassion, defined as an attitude of kindness and understanding towards one's own imperfections, and perceived support, especially from family. The present study aimed to explore whether self-compassion was negatively a

Within-person changes in mindfulness and self-compassion predict enhanced emotional well-being in healthy, but stressed adolescents.

Meditation training programs for adolescents are predicated on the assumptions that mindfulness and self-compassion can be directly cultivated, and further, that doing so is beneficial for emotional well-being. Yet, very little research with adolescents has tested these assumptions directly. In the current study, I examined longitudinal relationships between changes in mindfulness and self-compassion and changes in emotional well-being among healthy, but stressed adolescents who participated in five-day, intensive meditation retreats. Immediately before and after the retreats, and then three m

Stuck in a cycle of harm? The impact of emotional abuse on bullying and non-suicidal self-injury in adolescents: the role of perceived social support and self-compassion.

BACKGROUND: Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) and bullying in adolescents have become more prominent in recent years, and childhood maltreatment is an important risk factor. However, it is still not clear enough how covert yet critical emotional harm from the family can lead to adolescents' external and internal harmful behaviors, and the underlying mechanism is not clear. OBJECTIVE: This study examined the impact of emotional abuse on adolescent NSSI/ bullying and the mediating role of perceived social support and self-compassion, as well as gender differences.
