A shrunken world - micropsia after a right occipito-parietal ischemic stroke.

Micropsia is a rare condition in which patients perceive the outside world smaller in size than it actually is. We examined a patient who, after a right occipito-parietal stroke, subjectively reported perceiving everything at seventy percent of the actual size. Using experimental tasks, we confirmed the extent of his micropsia at 70%. Visual half-field tests showed an impaired perception of shape, location and motion in the left visual field. As his micropsia concerns the complete visual field, we suggest that it is caused by a higher-order compensation process in order to reconcile the confli

Biopsychosocial dimensions of cancer and spiritual coping strategies: a phenomenological study of patient experiences.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to examine the experiences of individuals living with cancer across biopsychosocial dimensions and to understand the meanings they attributed to spirituality and their forms of spiritual coping within the illness process. METHODS: This qualitative study was conducted using a phenomenological design. Thirteen patients with cancer were recruited from a public hospital using criterion sampling, a purposive sampling strategy. Data were collected through individual, face-to-face, semi-structured in-depth interviews and analyzed using Colaizzi's seven-step phenome

Dynamic visual perception and reading development in Chinese school children.

The development of reading skills may depend to a certain extent on the development of basic visual perception. The magnocellular theory of developmental dyslexia assumes that deficits in the magnocellular pathway, indicated by less sensitivity in perceiving dynamic sensory stimuli, are responsible for a proportion of reading difficulties experienced by dyslexics. Using a task that measures coherent motion detection threshold, this study examined the relationship between dynamic visual perception and reading development in Chinese children. Experiment 1 compared the performance of 27 dyslexics

The influence of cisapride on gastric tone and the perception of gastric distension.

BACKGROUND: Delayed gastric emptying, impaired gastric accommodation to a meal and hypersensitivity to gastric distension have been implied in the pathophysiology of functional dyspepsia. Dyspeptic patients are often treated with the prokinetic drug cisapride. AIM: To assess the effects of cisapride on perception of gastric distension and gastric accommodation to a meal. METHODS: Eighteen healthy volunteers underwent a gastric barostat study on two occasions, after pretreatment with placebo or cisapride 10 mg q.d.s. Graded isobaric and isovolumetric distensions were performed until the subje

Melodic interval perception with acoustic and electric hearing in bimodal and single-sided deaf cochlear implant listeners.

Two notes sounded sequentially elicit melodic intervals and contours that form the basis of melody. Many previous studies have characterized pitch perception in cochlear implant (CI) users to be poor which may be due to the limited spectro-temporal resolution and/or spectral warping with electric hearing compared to acoustic hearing (AH). Poor pitch perception in CIs has been shown to distort melodic interval perception. To characterize this interval distortion, we recruited CI users with either normal (single sided deafness, SSD) or limited (bimodal) AH in the non-implanted ear. The contralat

Tactile stimulus discrimination in adolescents with anorexia nervosa: a behavioral and neurophysiological study.

Body image disturbance (BID) is a key symptom of anorexia nervosa (AN) and involves body size overestimation. Although this overestimation might be related to perceptual deficits, little is known about tactile perception in AN. To clarify the role of putative tactile deficits in BID, the present study investigated 36 adolescent female AN patients and 41 matched healthy controls (HC) using a tactile oddball paradigm during parallel EEG and MEG (EMEG) measurement. Tactile perception was behaviorally tested via the Touch Test (tactile perception threshold), a deviant count task, and a tactile sti

Knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions of hidradenitis suppurativa among young adults in Singapore.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is 0.00033% to 4.10% globally. Few epidemiological studies derive from Asia, with social stigmatization postulated to result in under-diagnosis. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess the self-reported prevalence of HS, and the knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions towards HS among Singaporean young-adults. METHODS: A cross-sectional study (n = 158) was conducted by anonymous online questionnaire. The association between demographic factors and risk of potentially undiagnosed HS was evaluated using multivariable logistic regression.

Preference for male children and contraceptive use in Taiwan.

Taiwan has an active family-planning program. Yet the preference for sons is deeply ingrained in the Chinese culture and may discourage women from limiting their family size if they feel they have too few sons. In this study, research problems concerned the relationships between women's stated preferences for the sex of their children, their perceptions of their in-laws' preferences for the number and sex of their children, and their use of birth control and choice of birth control methods. It was found that few women verbalized a preference for the sex of children, but the number of boys alre

Micropsia and Polyopia Following Multi-Focal Infarction: A Case Report.

Individuals with Alice in Wonderland syndrome can present with a wide variety of visual symptoms. Most commonly, visual disturbances in size perception such as micropsia or macropsia are observed. However, rarer disturbances such as the visual perception of multiple images, termed polyopia, as well as kinetopsia, a visual illusion in which stationary objects are perceived as moving, have also been described. Previous neuroimaging of different individuals with Alice in Wonderland syndrome has shown the involvement of topographically separate brain regions. Here, we describe an individual who se

Intensive care nurses' perceptions of good death and end-of-life care attitudes and behaviors: a descriptive and correlational quantitative study.

BACKGROUND: Intensive care units are technically and emotionally complex environments where nurses frequently witness the end of life. In this process, nurses’ perceptions of good death and their attitudes and behaviors toward end-of-life care directly affect the quality of care provided. Understanding these relationships is important for improving the quality of holistic end-of-life care. METHODS: This descriptive and correlational study was conducted to examine the relationships between intensive care nurses’ perceptions of good death and their attitudes and behaviors toward end-of-life care

Interactions between perception and action in a reaction task with overlapping S-R assignments.

We have used a novel task to study relationships between perception and action. Four experiments studied stimulus-response (S-R) relationships under conditions in which stimuli and responses were functionally unrelated (i.e., not assigned to each other by instruction) and merely overlapped in time. On each trial, participants carried out movements on a graphic tablet while observing motions displayed on a computer screen. The movement on trial n was specified by the motion observed on the previous trial n-1, whereas the motion observed on trial n specified the movement to be performed on trial

Evidence of Aerosol Formation During Simulated Wine Drinking.

In this study, aerosols formed via oral movement while drinking wine were hypothesized as an oral-nasal delivery mechanism for aroma compounds with limited volatility, potentially inducing specific retronasal sensory perception. To this end, the formation mechanism of flavored aerosol particles (hexyl hexanoate) using model wine samples was investigated in vitro using the mechanical agitation method. The physical and physicochemical property variations of model wine samples had a significant impact on the total quantity of formed aerosol and average particle size, as well as flavor release, va

Visuospatial short-term memory and dorsal visual gray matter volume.

Visual short-term memory (VSTM) is an important cognitive capacity that varies across the healthy adult population and is affected in several neurodevelopmental disorders. It has been suggested that neuroanatomy places limits on this capacity through a map architecture that creates competition for cortical space. This suggestion has been supported by the finding that primary visual (V1) gray matter volume (GMV) is positively associated with VSTM capacity. However, evidence from neurodevelopmental disorders suggests that the dorsal visual stream is more broadly vulnerable and atypical volumes o

A Protective Mechanism against Illusory Perceptions Is Amygdala-Dependent.

Most people have a clear sense of body ownership, preserving them from physical harm. However, perceptual body illusions - famously the rubber hand illusion (RHI) - can be elicited experimentally in healthy individuals. We hypothesize that the amygdala, a core component of neural circuits of threat processing, is involved in protective mechanisms against disturbed body perceptions. To test this hypothesis, we started by investigating two monozygotic human twin sisters with focal bilateral amygdala damage due to Urbach-Wiethe disease. Relative to 20 healthy women, the twins exhibited, on two oc

Repetitive optokinetic stimulation induces lasting recovery from visual neglect.

PURPOSE: To evaluate whether repetitive optokinetic stimulation with active pursuit eye movements leads to substantial and greater recovery from visual neglect as compared to conventional visual scanning training. METHODS: Two groups of five patients with leftsided hemineglect were consecutively collected and matched for clinical and demographic variables as well as neglect severity. One group received five treatment sessions of repetitive optokinetic stimulation (R-OKS) within one week, while the other group received the same amount of conventional visual scanning training (VST) using identi

Vection: the contributions of absolute and relative visual motion.

Inspection of a visual scene rotating about the vertical body axis induces a compelling sense of self rotation, or circular vection. Circular vection is suppressed by stationary objects seen beyond the moving display but not by stationary objects in the foreground. We hypothesised that stationary objects in the foreground facilitate vection because they introduce a relative-motion signal into what would otherwise be an absolute-motion signal. Vection latency and magnitude were measured with a full-field moving display and with stationary objects of various sizes and at various positions in the
