Interpersonal violence and other social-structural barriers associated with needing HIV treatment support for women living with HIV.

Women living with HIV (WLWH), experience disproportionate rates of violence, along with suboptimal HIV health outcomes, despite recent advancements in HIV treatment, known as antiretroviral therapy (ART). The objectives of this study were to: (a) describe different types of support needed to take ART and (b) investigate the social and structural correlates associated with needing support for ART adherence among WLWH. Data are drawn from Sexual health and HIV/AIDS: Women's Longitudinal Needs Assessment, a community-based open research cohort with cisgender and transgender WLWH, aged 14+ who liv

Effect of cognitive and structural social capital on depression among older adults in Ghana: A multilevel cross-sectional analysis.

Evidence from existing studies suggests social capital has mixed effects on depression and other common mental disorders. There is little knowledge of the possible association between social capital and depression among the growing older population in sub-Saharan Africa. This study investigates the effect of cognitive social capital (trust and sense of safety) and structural social capital (social participation or engagement in social activities) on depression among older adults in Ghana. Utilizing multilevel mixed-effect analysis, we investigate the effect of individual-level and neighborhood

Association of functional and structural social support with chronic kidney disease among African Americans: the Jackson Heart Study.

BACKGROUND: There is limited evidence on the relationship between social support and renal outcomes in African Americans. We sought to determine the association of social support with prevalent chronic kidney disease (CKD) and kidney function decline in an African American cohort. We also examined whether age modifies the association between social support and kidney function decline. METHODS: We identified Jackson Heart Study (JHS) participants with baseline (Exam in 2000-2004) functional and structural social support data via the Interpersonal Support Evaluation List (ISEL) and social netwo

Structural Inequities and Social Networks Impact Hormone Use and Misuse Among Transgender Women in Los Angeles County.

In order to reduce gender dysphoria and combat stigma, transgender women often affirm their gender through social and medical transition, which may include cross-sex hormone therapy. This study examined associations between medically monitored hormone use and hormone misuse (non-prescribed hormone use including "fillers"), structural inequities (access to housing, health insurance, and income), and social network dynamics among 271 transgender women in Los Angeles. Hormone use status was coded trichotomously (hormone use, hormone misuse, no hormone use), and robust multinomial logistic regress

Structural Brain Network Reorganization and Social Cognition Related to Adverse Perinatal Condition from Infancy to Early Adolescence.

Adverse conditions during fetal life have been associated to both structural and functional changes in neurodevelopment from the neonatal period to adolescence. In this study, connectomics was used to assess the evolution of brain networks from infancy to early adolescence. Brain network reorganization over time in subjects who had suffered adverse perinatal conditions is characterized and related to neurodevelopment and cognition. Three cohorts of prematurely born infants and children (between 28 and 35 weeks of gestational age), including individuals with a birth weight appropriated for gest

Social and Structural Challenges to Drug Cessation Among Couples in Northern Mexico: Implications for Drug Treatment in Underserved Communities.

BACKGROUND: Available drug treatment modalities may inadequately address social and structural contexts surrounding recovery efforts. METHODS: This mixed methods analysis drew on (1) surveys with female sex workers and their intimate male partners and (2) semi-structured interviews with a subsample of 41 couples (n=82 individuals, 123 total interviews) in Northern Mexico. Descriptive and content analyses examined drug cessation and treatment experiences. RESULTS: Perceived need for drug treatment was high, yet only 35% had ever accessed services. Financial and institutional barriers (childca

Midwives' perceptions of organisational structures and processes influencing their ability to provide caseload care to socially disadvantaged and vulnerable women.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined midwives' perceptions of organisational structures and processes of care when working in a caseload model (Midwifery Group Practice MGP) for socially disadvantaged and vulnerable childbearing women. DESIGN: This study used Donabedian's theoretical framework for evaluating the quality of health care provision. Of the 17 eligible midwives, 15 participated in focus group discussions and two others provided written comments. Thematic analysis was guided by three headings; clinical outcomes, processes of care and organisational structure. FINDINGS: Midwives believed

Social, structural and behavioral determinants of overall health status in a cohort of homeless and unstably housed HIV-infected men.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies indicate multiple influences on the overall health of HIV-infected persons; however, few assess and rank longitudinal changes in social and structural barriers that are disproportionately found in impoverished populations. We empirically ranked factors that longitudinally impact the overall health status of HIV-infected homeless and unstably housed men. METHODS AND FINDINGS: Between 2002 and 2008, a cohort of 288 HIV+ homeless and unstably housed men was recruited and followed over time. The population was 60% non-Caucasian and the median age was 41 years; 67% of

A Qualitative Evaluation of Structural and Social Determinants of Health, Black Race, and Perspectives of Prostate Cancer Risk and Early Detection.

Black men in the United States face disproportionately high rates of prostate cancer incidence and mortality. Despite this, few prostate-specific antigen (PSA) testing guidelines include race-conscious guidelines, and few studies exists on specific, equity-related barriers to accessing PSA testing for Black men. This qualitative study, conducted in collaboration with the Black and African Descent Collaborative for Prostate Cancer Action (BACPAC), explores the perspectives, beliefs, and equity-related barriers affecting PSA testing access among Black men in Washington State. Job satisfaction among medical assistants in German general practice: a qualitative study of social, structural and personal factors.

BACKGROUND: Medical assistants (MAs) are pivotal for access, coordination, and continuity in German primary care, yet workforce shortages and limited attention in research and policy persist. Prior studies quantify dissatisfaction and attrition drivers but offer little insight into how MAs who remain in practice experience job satisfaction. This study explores the social, personal and structural factors shaping MA job satisfaction in everyday work. METHODS: We conducted 14 semi-structured telephone interviews with MAs from German general practices (November-December 2023), recruited via the r

Identifying a structural brain network for social anxiety: connectome-based predictive modeling and network analyses in a transdiagnostic sample.

Trait social anxiety (SA) is continuous and can manifest across the entire spectrum of mental health, from subclinical levels in healthy controls to burdensome manifestations in major depressive disorder and finally full-blown disorders like social anxiety disorder (SAD). Although it has been proposed that SA is associated with deviations in the structural connectome, there is little research on the SA spectrum and its relation to abnormalities in brain structural networks. In this study, we aim to identify a structural brain network for SA across diagnostic groups using a transdiagnostic samp

Social Structure of Sheep Flocks at Points of the Production Cycle and Relationship to Disease Spread, Using a Simulated Epidemic of Footrot.

Footrot is one of the top five globally important diseases of sheep and causes lameness, leading to poor welfare and productivity. Transmission of Dichelobacter nodosus, the causative agent, occurs via surfaces such as pasture or bedding and persistence occurs from diseased sheep shedding bacteria into the environment; D. nodosus cannot replicate off host. High resolution proximity sensors were deployed on a flock of Poll Dorset sheep for 10-17 days at several points of the production cycle (teasing, tupping, pregnancy, and lactation (<6-week-old lambs)) between July 2018 and May 2021. Exposure, Extinction, and Cognitive Appraisals in Autistic Adults With Social Anxiety: Evidence From a Structured Speech Exposure Task.

Social anxiety (SA) is highly prevalent among autistic adults, yet little is known about how autistic people respond to common therapeutic strategies, such as exposure tasks. This study examined responses to a structured speech exposure task embedded within an 8-week modified cognitive-behavioral therapy (M-CBT) program. Thirty-two autistic adults with co-occurring SA completed pre- and post-task assessments of anxiety and related cognitive appraisals, including self-focused attention, perceived performance, appearance concerns, and threat appraisals. Participants reported appropriate engageme

Hematological cancer patients' social support, coping strategies, anxiety, depression and posttraumatic growth: a structural equation model.

ObjectivePosttraumatic growth (PTG), defined as positive psychological changes following traumatic events, has been observed in some hematological cancer patients during their disease course. These changes, encompassing shifts in life perspective, interpersonal relationships, and self-perception, are critical for psychological recovery. However, the interplay of social support, coping strategies, anxiety, and depression in shaping PTG remains unclear. Therefore, the aim of this study was to explore these associations in hematological cancer patients using a hypothetical model.MethodsFrom Augus

Structural conditions, social networks, and the HIV vulnerability among Indonesian male labour migrants and motorbike taxi drivers.

BACKGROUND: The Indonesian National AIDS report reveals that the percentage of HIV cases in the country is significantly higher in men compared to women, which is contrary to global AIDS data. Using a conceptual model of how social networks impact health, this paper describes how structural conditions, such as poverty, lack of job opportunities, and lack of income shaped the social networks of Indonesian men. It also describes how these social networks created opportunities for various social mechanisms, including social influence, peer pressure, and intimate contact, that facilitated HIV infe

Shared and distinct structural brain networks related to childhood maltreatment and social support: connectome-based predictive modeling.

Childhood maltreatment (CM) has been associated with changes in structural brain connectivity even in the absence of mental illness. Social support, an important protective factor in the presence of childhood maltreatment, has been positively linked to white matter integrity. However, the shared effects of current social support and CM and their association with structural connectivity remain to be investigated. They might shed new light on the neurobiological basis of the protective mechanism of social support. Using connectome-based predictive modeling (CPM), we analyzed structural connectom
