Auditory Corticothalamic Neurons Are Recruited by Motor Preparatory Inputs.

Corticothalamic (CT) neurons comprise the largest component of the descending sensory corticofugal pathway, but their contributions to brain function and behavior remain an unsolved mystery. To address the hypothesis that layer 6 (L6) CTs may be activated by extra-sensory inputs prior to anticipated sounds, we performed optogenetically targeted single-unit recordings and two-photon imaging of Ntsr1-Cre+ L6 CT neurons in the primary auditory cortex (A1) while mice were engaged in an active listening task. We found that L6 CTs and other L6 units began spiking hundreds of milliseconds prior to or

Dynamic changes of vocal tract dimensions with sound pressure level during messa di vocea).

The messa di voce (MdV), which consists of a continuous crescendo and subsequent decrescendo on one pitch is one of the more difficult exercises of the technical repertoire of Western classical singing. With rising lung pressure, regulatory adjustments both on the level of the glottis and the vocal tract are required to keep the pitch stable. The dynamic changes of vocal tract dimensions with the bidirectional variation of sound pressure level (SPL) during MdV were analyzed by two-dimensional real-time magnetic resonance imaging (25 frames/s) and synchronous audio recordings in 12 professional

Earless toads sense low frequencies but miss the high notes.

Sensory losses or reductions are frequently attributed to relaxed selection. However, anuran species have lost tympanic middle ears many times, despite anurans' use of acoustic communication and the benefit of middle ears for hearing airborne sound. Here we determine whether pre-existing alternative sensory pathways enable anurans lacking tympanic middle ears (termed earless anurans) to hear airborne sound as well as eared species or to better sense vibrations in the environment. We used auditory brainstem recordings to compare hearing and vibrational sensitivity among 10 species (six eared, f

Distinguishing obstructive from central sleep apneas and hypopneas using linear SVM and acoustic features.

Sleep Apnea (SA) is a very common but underdiagnosed respiratory disorder. SA has 2 main types, obstructive and central sleep apnea (OSA and CSA, respectively). The distinction between the 2 types is important for proper clinical management. Our aim in this study was to deploy acoustic analysis of breath sounds to distinguish central from obstructive events. We recorded breath sounds from 29 patients from which 45 segments with obstructive only and 40 segments with central only respiratory events were isolated. Subsequently, 10 acoustic features were extracted and used to identify basic breath

Auditory nerve perinodal dysmyelination in noise-induced hearing loss.

Exposure to loud sound (acoustic overexposure; AOE) induces hearing loss and damages cellular structures at multiple locations in the auditory pathway. Whether AOE can also induce changes in myelin sheaths of the auditory nerve (AN) is an important issue particularly because these changes can be responsible for impaired action potential propagation along the AN. Here we investigate the effects of AOE on morphological and electrophysiological features of the centrally directed part of the rat AN projecting from the cochlear spiral ganglion to brainstem cochlear nuclei. Using electron microscopy

Effects of early auditory deprivation and stimulation on auditory brainstem responses in the rat.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of auditory sound deprivation or stimulation on auditory brainstem responses (ABRs) during the maturation period of the rat auditory system. At postnatal day (PND) 21, 40 newborn Norway Brown male rats were categorized into 3 groups: (i) an auditory deprivation group in which a bilateral average conductive hearing loss of 27 dB was induced; (ii) an auditory activation group exposed to 65-90 dB sound pressure level; and (iii) a control group. ABR recordings were made on PND 84. In order to compare group differences in interpeak latency (IP

Remote Speech Analysis in the Evaluation of Hospitalized Patients With Acute Decompensated Heart Failure.

OBJECTIVES: This study assessed the performance of an automated speech analysis technology in detecting pulmonary fluid overload in patients with acute decompensated heart failure (ADHF). BACKGROUND: Pulmonary edema is the main cause of heart failure (HF)-related hospitalizations and a key predictor of poor postdischarge prognosis. Frequent monitoring is often recommended, but signs of decompensation are often missed. Voice and sound analysis technologies have been shown to successfully identify clinical conditions that affect vocal cord vibration mechanics. METHODS: Adult patients with ADHF

Heart murmur detection from phonocardiogram recordings: The George B. Moody PhysioNet Challenge 2022.

Cardiac auscultation is an accessible diagnostic screening tool that can help to identify patients with heart murmurs, who may need follow-up diagnostic screening and treatment for abnormal cardiac function. However, experts are needed to interpret the heart sounds, limiting the accessibility of cardiac auscultation in resource-constrained environments. Therefore, the George B. Moody PhysioNet Challenge 2022 invited teams to develop algorithmic approaches for detecting heart murmurs and abnormal cardiac function from phonocardiogram (PCG) recordings of heart sounds. For the Challenge, we sourc

Statistical analysis of tracheal breath sounds during wakefulness for screening obstructive sleep apnea.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a prevalent disorder. The accepted method of diagnosis in widespread clinical practice, polysomnography (PSG), is costly and very time consuming; therefore, quick screening methods, especially when there is a need for quick diagnosis, is of great interest. Diagnostic methods which exploit subtle differences in breath sounds recorded during wakefulness, such as our group's Awake-OSA technology, have shown their capability to diagnose OSA at the research stage. Simplifying the breath sound recording procedure employed in the Awake-OSA diagnostic method would incr

Disrupted auditory N1, theta power and coherence suppression to willed speech in people with schizophrenia.

The phenomenon of sensory self-suppression - also known as sensory attenuation - occurs when a person generates a perceptible stimulus (such as a sound) by performing an action (such as speaking). The sensorimotor control system is thought to actively predict and then suppress the vocal sound in the course of speaking, resulting in lowered cortical responsiveness when speaking than when passively listening to an identical sound. It has been hypothesized that auditory hallucinations in schizophrenia result from a reduction in self-suppression due to a disruption of predictive mechanisms require

Smartphone-Based Real-time Assessment of Swallowing Ability From the Swallowing Sound.

Dysphagia can cause serious challenges to both physical and mental health. Aspiration due to dysphagia is a major health risk that could cause pneumonia and even death. The videofluoroscopic swallow study (VFSS), which is considered the gold standard for the diagnosis of dysphagia, is not widely available, expensive and causes exposure to radiation. The screening tests used for dysphagia need to be carried out by trained staff, and the evaluations are usually non-quantifiable. This paper investigates the development of the Swallowscope, a smartphone-based device and a feasible real-time swallo

Digital stethoscope use by non-physician primary care health workers on children under five years of age in rural Bangladesh: a feasibility study.

Lung auscultation is not included in the WHO Integrated Management of Childhood Illness algorithm, partly due to concerns regarding feasibility and reliability when performed by non-physician primary health workers in low-resource settings. In this feasibility study, we evaluated whether non-physician primary care health workers (community health care providers (CHCPs)) can record quality lung sounds from children aged 2-59 months. Feasibility was predefined as more than 50% of children having quality recordings at the overall sample level. After receiving three days of structured training, ni

Effects of sound exposure from a seismic airgun on heart rate, acceleration and depth use in free-swimming Atlantic cod and saithe.

Airguns used for offshore seismic exploration by the oil and gas industry contribute to globally increasing anthropogenic noise levels in the marine environment. There is concern that the omnidirectional, high intensity sound pulses created by airguns may alter fish physiology and behaviour. A controlled short-term field experiment was performed to investigate the effects of sound exposure from a seismic airgun on the physiology and behaviour of two socioeconomically and ecologically important marine fishes: the Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) and saithe (Pollachius virens). Distribution of aortic mechanical prosthetic valve closure sound model parameters on the surface of the chest.

It has been previously proposed that heart valve closure sounds can be modeled by a sum of decaying sinusoids, based on the hypothesis that the heart cavity, heart walls, major vessels, and other structures in the chest constitute a frequency selective linear acoustic system and this system is excited by the rapidly decelerating valve occluder. In this study, distribution of the parameters of this model for the second heart sound is investigated. For this purpose, heart sounds of 10 patients who have a St. Jude-type bileaflet mechanical heart valve prosthesis in aortic position are recorded. R

Assessment of phonocardiographical investigations among seafarers.

A total of 763 seafarers were selected at random for the examinations. Their number represented 9.82% of the total employed. About 86.63% of them were examined. Another group examined were 202 college undergraduates--all the undergraduates of the second year of studies. The average age of seafarers was 41.14 +/- 8.84 years, and of undergraduates 22.54 +/- 1.29 years. A normal heart first sound was recorded in 95.41% of seafarers, normal second sound in 95.94%, and in 95.05% and 95.05% of the undergraduates, respectively. Normal third and fourth sounds were recorded jointly in 4.45% of seafarer

Comparison of electromyography, sound, bioimpedance, and high-resolution manometry for differentiating swallowing and vocalization events.

OBJECTIVES: Non-invasive surface recording devices used for detecting swallowing events include electromyography (EMG), sound, and bioimpedance. However, to our knowledge there are no comparative studies in which these waveforms were recorded simultaneously. We assessed the accuracy and efficiency of high-resolution manometry (HRM) topography, EMG, sound, and bioimpedance waveforms, for identifying swallowing events. METHODS: Six participants randomly performed saliva swallow or vocalization of "ah" 62 times. Pharyngeal pressure data were obtained using an HRM catheter. EMG, sound, and bioimp

Music Is Quasi-Rhythmic Too: Comparing Bandwidth in Speech and Music Acoustic Modulation Spectra.

Speech and music both unfold over time. However, these dynamics are perceived quite differently: music as rhythmic, and speech as quasi-rhythmic. Here, we aim to identify whether this distinction between rhythm and quasi-rhythm is sourced from the raw acoustic waveform by analyzing the modulation spectrum of the acoustic envelope. We analyzed several large corpora on three scales: the coarsest scale containing recordings of each corpus, the intermediate scale of individual speakers/songs, and the finest scale of individual sentences or short musical segments. We confirm previous findings that
