BACKGROUND: Borrelia burgdorferi is a tick-borne spirochete that causes Lyme borreliosis (LB). After an initial tick bite, it spreads from the deposition site in the dermis to distant tissues of the host. It is generally believed that this spirochete disseminates via the hematogenous route. Borrelia persica causes relapsing fever and is able to replicate in the blood stream. Currently the exact dissemination pathway of LB pathogens in the host is not known and controversially discussed.
METHODS: In this study, we established a strict intravenous infection murine model using host-adapted spiro

Hydropericardium-hepatitis syndrome (HHS) is characterized by pericardial effusion and hepatitis and causes huge economic losses in the poultry industry in China. In this study, a strain of fowl adenoviruses (FAdV-4) (GX-1) was isolated from liver samples of diseased chickens with HHS. Phylogenetic analysis based on complete genome gene revealed that GX-1 clustered with the C-type fowl adenovirus and was serotyped as FAdV-4. Pathogenicity testing showed that the GX-1 strain caused 100% mortality in 10-day-old specific pathogen-free chickens at a dose of 104 tissue culture infective doses (TCID

Brucellosis is an emerging infectious disease affecting humans and animals. In this study, we investigated the in vitro and in vivo effects of tannic acid (TA) against Brucella abortus infection. After infection, F-actin polymerization and mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) (ERK 1/2 and p38α) phosphorylation were reduced in TA-treated cells compared with that in control cells. The mice were infected via an intraperitoneal route and were orally given TA or phosphate-buffered saline for 14 days. Spleen weights of the TA-treated and control mice were not different; however, splenic prolife

Infectious bronchitis is a highly contagious, acute viral respiratory disease of chickens, caused by infectious bronchitis virus (IBV). In recent years, the isolation rate of QX-like IBV has increased in the world. To clarify this phenomenon and better understand the pathogenicity of QX-like IBV, we examined differences in pathogenicity between two IBV strains, SD and M41, which belong to QX-like and Mass-type IBV, respectively. SD strain was more virulent in 3-week-old specific-pathogen-free chickens than M41 strain causing higher mortality with severe renal lesions. The tissue distribution o

BACKGROUND: Heartworm-associated respiratory disease (HARD) in cats is induced by the arrival and death of immature adult Dirofilaria immitis in the pulmonary system and is indistinguishable from mature adult heartworm infection.
METHODS: A controlled, blind research study investigated the long-term (18 months post infection, PI) consequences of the inflammatory response associated with the death of immature adult heartworms in cats. Three groups of cats, 10 per group, were infected with 100 third-stage (L3) larvae by subcutaneous injection. Group A cats were treated with selamectin (Revoluti

BACKGROUND: Human babesiosis is considered an emerging threat in China. Dozens of human infections with Babesia microti have been reported recently, especially in southern China. However, the transmission vectors of this parasite in these areas are not well understood. Rhipicephalus haemaphysaloides, which is one of the dominant tick species in southern China, is a major vector of bovine babesiosis in China. However, whether this tick has the potential to transmit B. microti has not been tested. The present study experimentally investigated the transmission competence of B. microti through R.

Marek's disease virus (MDV) is a herpesvirus that induces lymphomas and immunosuppression in chickens. MDV-induced immunosuppression (MDV-IS) is divided into two phases: early-MDV-IS occurring mainly in chickens lacking maternal antibodies (MAb) against MDV and associated with lymphoid organ atrophy; and late-MDV-IS occurring once MDV enters latency and during tumour development. Our objectives were to document the impact of late-MDV-IS on commercial poultry (meat-type chickens bearing MAb against MDV and that were vaccinated or unvaccinated against MD) and to optimize a model to study late-MD

Over the last five decades, the pathogenicity of the Marek's disease virus (MDV) has evolved from the relatively mild strains (mMDV) observed in the 1960s to the more severe very-virulent-plus strains currently observed in today's outbreaks. The use of vaccines to control Marek's disease (MD), but not the infection cycle, is thought to be the major influence on the evolution of MDV. Selection for genetic resistance to MD has also been employed by the industry to control MD in the commercial setting but the role of host genetics on the evolution of MDV has been difficult to investigate in the f

Helicobacter (H.) heilmannii sensu stricto (s.s.) is a zoonotic bacterium that naturally colonizes the stomach of dogs and cats. In humans, this microorganism has been associated with gastritis, peptic ulcer disease and mucosa associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma. Little information is available about the pathogenesis of H. heilmannii s.s. infections in humans and it is unknown whether differences in virulence exist within this species. Therefore, a Mongolian gerbil model was used to study bacterium-host interactions of 9 H. heilmannii s.s. strains. The colonization ability of the strain

Amaranth was identified as a possible component of an anti-sclerotic diet. To date, particular substances responsible for this effect have not been exactly specified. Squalene, which is contained in amaranth, could be responsible for this effect. However, there are also other potential substances and the hypolipidemic effect of amaranth can be caused by a synergistic effect of several components. This study investigated and compared the impact of amaranth flour and squalene on the total cholesterol (CHOL(TOT)) and LDL cholesterol (CHOL(LDL)) levels in mice with dyslipidemia induced by a choles

BACKGROUND: Dysregulation of immune responses in inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) results in intestinal inflammation and vascular injury while exacerbating systemic disease. CD39 is an ectonucleotidase, expressed by T regulatory cells and dendritic cells, that hydrolyzes extracellular nucleotides to modify those cellular immune responses implicated in IBD. Genetic polymorphisms of CD39 have been linked to Crohn's disease while gene deletion in mice exacerbates dextran sodium sulphate-induced colitis.
AIM: The aim of this study was to test how global deletion of CD39 in mice impacts other mod

BACKGROUND: Staphylococcal enterotoxins (SEs) are the most common cause of foodborne diseases and toxic shock throughout the world. However, no vaccine that prevents emesis induced by SEs has been described.
METHODS: A nontoxic mutant of SEA, SEAD227A, was constructed by site-directed mutagenesis and was purified by means of the Escherichia coli expression system. House musk shrews, a small emetic animal model, were immunized with SEAD227A and then challenged with wild-type SEA. SEA-induced emesis was recorded for 3 h. Antibody production was analyzed by gel double-immunodiffusion assay. Neut

We exposed chicken embryos at embryonation day 18 (ED18) to a classical virulent infectious bursal disease virus (IBDV; cIBDV) and an attenuated strain of IBDV (aIBDV) and examined the response of embryonic lymphoid cells to these viruses. Embryos responded much more vigorously to cIBDV than to aIBDV. Following cIBDV exposure, embryonic thymus and bursa showed cellular destruction, enhanced rate of apoptosis and presence of viral proteins detectable by immunohistochemistry. At ED21, thymocytes from cIBDV-exposed embryos were severely deficient (P<0.05) in responding to stimulation in vitro wit

FP3 and 612 viruses are enterovirus-like viruses. Antibody to these viruses is widespread in chicken flocks, but nothing is known about their pathogenicity. Seven experiments were carried out to investigate the tissue tropism and associated pathology of these novel fowl enterovirus-like viruses and to compare these with the effects of the previously studied enterovirus-like viruses, ELV-1 and avian nephritis (ANV). ANV is now classified as an astrovirus. Preliminary experiments were carried out with FP3 virus, 612 virus and ELV-1 to determine the distribution of viral antigen. Each preliminary

Before the implementation of strategies to establish specified pathogen-free commercial poultry flocks, the ultimate goals need to be identified: 1) consumer protection by minimizing the risk for zoonotic diseases and food-borne pathogens, and/or 2) animal health protection against primary and secondary pathogens. The success for the establishment of specific pathogen-free poultry flocks depends on the biological characteristics, the epidemiological distribution and the transmission route of each pathogen. For zoonotic pathogens such as Salmonella Typhimurium, Salmonella Enteritidis, Campyloba

Parkinson's disease, a major neurodegenerative disorder in humans whose etiology is unknown, may be associated with some environmental factors. Nocardia otitidiscaviarum (GAM-5) isolated from a patient with an actinomycetoma produced signs similar to Parkinson's disease following iv injection into NMRI mice. NMRI mice were infected intravenously with a non-lethal dose of 5 x 10(6) colony forming units of N. otitidiscaviarum (GAM-5). Fourteen days after bacterial infection, most of the 60 mice injected exhibited parkinsonian features characterized by vertical head tremor, akinesia/bradykinesia,

To determine the persistence of Hepatozoon americanum in a naturally infected dog, skeletal muscle biopsies were performed at approximately 6-mo intervals over a period of 5.5 yr, and the samples were examined for presence of lesions of American canine hepatozoonosis (ACH). Nymphal Amblyomma maculatum (Gulf Coast tick) were allowed to feed to repletion on the dog periodically over the 5.5-yr period, and adult ticks were dissected and examined for presence of H. americanum oocysts. With 3 exceptions, the biopsied muscle contained lesions characteristic of ACH; no evidence of infection was found

Burow's solution has been found to inhibit the in vitro growth of most commonly occurring bacteria found in the discharging ear. These organisms were inoculated onto appropriate agar plates that contained serial dilutions of aluminium acetate. Results show that the lowest dilution able to inhibit the growth of these organisms lies between a 1:80 and a 1:160 dilution of Burow's solution.

The present experiment was performed to test the pathogenicity of Actinomyces-like bacteria in experimental animals and swine. Two rough (R) strains of Actinomyces-like bacteria isolated from a site of arthritis and from the tonsil in pigs were used as inocula. To investigate their susceptibility to Actinomyces-like bacteria, BALB/c, SS and ddY mice and guinea-pigs were inoculated intraperitoneally with the strains of Actinomyces-like bacteria. The ddY mice were used for the long-term observation of Actinomyces-like bacteria lesions and the mammary tissue of a sow was inoculated with Actinomyc
