Iodine deficiency among goiter patients in rural South Sudan.

BACKGROUND: It is estimated that 2.2 billion or approximately 30% of the world's population live in iodine-deficient areas. In a 2005 study households consuming iodized salt in South Sudan increased from 40% to 73%. Despite this achievement, there are still many goiter cases in rural South Sudan and iodine deficiency remains as a major public health problem in this part of sub Saharan Africa. The purpose of this study therefore was to determine the prevalence of iodine deficiency among rural Southern Sudan goiter patients. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was carried out in three South Sudan c

Logistics of Guinea worm disease eradication in South Sudan.

From 2006 to 2012, the South Sudan Guinea Worm Eradication Program reduced new Guinea worm disease (dracunculiasis) cases by over 90%, despite substantial programmatic challenges. Program logistics have played a key role in program achievements to date. The program uses disease surveillance and program performance data and integrated technical-logistical staffing to maintain flexible and effective logistical support for active community-based surveillance and intervention delivery in thousands of remote communities. Lessons learned from logistical design and management can resonate across simi

Mycetoma herbal treatment: the Mycetoma Research Centre, Sudan experience.

It is still challenging and difficult to treat patients with eumycetoma; the current treatment has many side effects and has proven to be expensive and characterized by high recurrence rate, hence the poor patients' treatment compliance. Most of the patients are of low socio-economic status, have many financial constraints and hence, many of them rely on alternative and herbal medicine for the treatment of their disease. With this background, the current study was conducted to determine the prevalence of herbal medicine usage among patients with eumycetoma. This cross-sectional, observational,

Dengue hemorrhagic fever outbreak in children in Port Sudan.

Dengue fever (DF)/dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) has emerged as a global public health problem with countries in Asia and the Pacific sharing more than 70% of the disease burden. In 2004-2005 a total of 312 cases admitted to Pediatric and Sea Port Hospitals in Port Sudan were clinically diagnosed as DHF. The mortality rate recorded was 3.8% (n=12). Of the cases 73.4% were patients 5-15 years of age. A total of 91.2% of cases were admitted during May and June 2005 with 49.4% residing in the eastern region of Port Sudan. Dengue shock syndrome was observed in 37 of 312 (11.9%). All patients had t

Brucellosis in camels (Camelus dromedarius) in Darfur, Western Sudan.

In a field outbreak of brucellosis in 21 camels mixed with cattle, sheep and goats, five camels, three of which showed clinical signs, were serologically positive. In a subsequent abattoir survey of apparently healthy camels, six animals were seropositive, albeit with titres that tended to be lower than those found in the field outbreak. Of the six seropositive slaughtered camels, five were shown to have lymph nodes (prescapular and supramammary) infected with brucellae (Brucella melitensis biovar 3, two camels; Brucella abortus biovar 6, three camels). Infection of camels with B. abortus biov

Progress toward poliomyelitis eradication--poliomyelitis outbreak in Sudan, 2004.

After the World Health Assembly of the World Health Organization (WHO) resolved in 1988 to eradicate poliomyelitis globally, the number of countries in which polio is endemic declined from 125 to six by 2003. However, in 2004, polio cases caused by wild poliovirus (WPV) originating from northern Nigeria were reported in 11 countries--Benin, Botswana, Cameroon, Guinea, Mali, Saudi Arabia, Burkina Faso, Central African Republic, Chad, Cote d'Ivoire, and Sudan--reestablishing transmission in the latter five countries. Sudan, a member state of the WHO Eastern Mediterranean Region, initiated poliom

Spotted fever group rickettsiae from ticks captured in Sudan.

Ticks were collected from ruminants in various areas of Sudan in 1998 and 2000. Primer pairs of rickettsial citrate synthase gene (gltA) and a spotted fever group (SFG) rickettsial 190-kDa surface antigen gene (rompA), respectively, were used for identification. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-positive products were used for DNA sequencing. The gltA gene was detected in 55% of the ticks examined (57/104). Among the 57 ticks studied, 19 were positive for the rompA gene. Thus, 18% of the ticks examined were found to be infected with SFG rickettsiae. The nucleotide sequences of the amplified romp

Re-emergence of epidemic sleeping sickness in southern Sudan.

A resurgence of sleeping sickness developed in southern Sudan during the past decade. Prevalence of confirmed Trypanosoma brucei gambiense infection in humans now exceeds 5% in several foci. From 1997 to 1999, trypanosomiasis control programmes in three counties of Western Equatoria Province detected 3785 new cases among 67 181 persons screened. A major contributing factor in the re-emergence of epidemic sleeping sickness was the lack of active case-finding throughout the 1990s. Although the situation is improving in sites where trypanosomiasis programmes have been recently implemented, co-ord

Congenital nephrotic syndrome in Sudan: histological and immunological features.

We report a 5-month-old Sudanese boy with a probable diagnosis of Congenital Nephrotic Syndrome. Our case had features which are neither typical of the Finnish type nor of other hereditary renal diseases. Histologically, the most striking changes were in the glomerular basement membranes which show patchy thinning, thick segments (with reduplication) and occasional low spikes. Tubules are well preserved, and no foam cells were seen. Electron microscopy showed extensive fusion of foot processes with podocyte microvilli. In parts the glomerular basement membrane shows irregular thickening and sp

Recombinant Sudan virus and evaluation of humoral cross-reactivity between Ebola and Sudan virus glycoproteins after infection or rVSV-ΔG-ZEBOV-GP vaccination.

Ebola disease outbreaks are major public health events because of human-to-human transmission and high mortality. These outbreaks are most often caused by Ebola virus, but at least three related viruses can also cause the disease. In 2022, Sudan virus re-emerged causing more than 160 confirmed and probable cases. This report describes generation of a recombinant Sudan virus and demonstrates its utility by quantifying antibody cross-reactivity between Ebola and Sudan virus glycoproteins after human infection or vaccination with a licensed Ebola virus vaccine.

Diagnosis and Management of Bacterial Meningitis by Pediatric Residents in Sudan.

Background Bacterial meningitis (BM) is a life-threatening emergency requiring timely and accurate diagnosis. In Sudan, a country within the meningitis belt, pediatric residents play a key role in BM management, yet no prior studies have evaluated their practices. This study aims to assess diagnostic and management approaches among pediatric residents and identify related challenges. Methodology A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among pediatric residents registered with the Sudan Medical Specialization Board (SMSB). Data were collected using a validated, self-administered quest

Paratuberculosis in small ruminants in the Sudan: prevalence and risk factors.

BACKGROUND: Paratuberculosis (PTB), caused by Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (MAP), is a contagious and chronic enteric disease of ruminants and many non-ruminants leading to emaciation and death of the animal. PTB is poorly investigated in sheep and goats in Sudan, where these animals contribute significantly to food security and poverty alleviation as sources of income. They also play an important role in the national economy through animal exports. The objectives of this study were to investigate the prevalence of PTB and associated risk factors in small ruminants. Blood and fa
