A pilot study for testing feasibility and preliminary influence of early intervention using text messaging for pressure ulcer prevention in individuals with spinal cord injury.

BACKGROUND: This pilot study assessed text messaging as an early intervention for preventing pressure ulcers (PrUs) in individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI) post-hospital discharge. METHOD: Thirty-nine wheelchair-users discharged after acquiring a SCI, underwent randomisation into an intervention group (n = 20) with text messages and a control group (n = 19). All participants received standard post-discharge care and completed a skincare questionnaire before and 6-month after discharge. Primary outcomes included feasibility and acceptability of early intervention using text messaging, alo

Effect of a Daily Text Messaging and Directly Supervised Therapy Intervention on Oral Mercaptopurine Adherence in Children With Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

IMPORTANCE: Suboptimal adherence to oral mercaptopurine treatment in children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) increases the risk of relapse. A frequently expressed barrier to adherence is forgetfulness, which is often overcome by parental vigilance. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether a multicomponent intervention, compared with education alone, will result in a higher proportion of patients with ALL who have mercaptopurine adherence rates 95% or higher, for all study participants and among patients younger than 12 years and vs those aged 12 years and older. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIP

Implementing Facilitated Access to a Text Messaging, Smoking Cessation Intervention Among Swedish Patients Having Elective Surgery: Qualitative Study of Patients' and Health Care Professionals' Perspectives.

BACKGROUND: There is strong evidence that short-term smoking cessation before surgery can reduce postoperative morbidity. There are, however, several structural problems in health care systems concerning how to implement smoking cessation interventions in routine practice for preoperative patients. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to analyze the implementation of a text messaging, smoking cessation intervention targeting patients having elective surgery. Implementation of facilitated access (ie, referral from practitioners) and the perceived usefulness among patients were investigated. Elective su

Text messaging for maternal and infant retention in prevention of mother-to-child HIV transmission services: A pragmatic stepped-wedge cluster-randomized trial in Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Timely diagnosis of infant HIV infection is essential for antiretroviral therapy (ART) initiation. In a randomized controlled trial, we found the Texting Improves Testing (TextIT) intervention (a theory-based text messaging system) to be efficacious for improving infant HIV testing rates and maternal retention in prevention of mother-to-child HIV transmission (PMTCT) programs. Using an implementation science approach, we aimed to evaluate real-world effectiveness of the intervention. METHODS AND FINDINGS: In a pragmatic, cluster-randomized, stepped-wedge trial with 2 time periods

The effect of text message-based health guidelines reinforcement on clinical outcomes following non-surgical periodontal therapy: A randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Periodontitis and gingivitis are two prevalent periodontal diseases caused by oral dysbiosis, which is mostly caused by the presence of tooth plaque. In periodontology, motivational interviewing (MI) is a patient-centered communication strategy that has been shown to improve patient motivation. The Short Message Service (SMS), in particular, has had enormous impacts on healthcare. The purpose of this study is to investigate how text message-based health guidelines reinforcement affects clinical results after non-surgical periodontal treatment in individuals with periodontal disease

BACKGROUND: Reminders via digital technology offer a novel and efficient means to address medication forgetfulness, as they are easily accessible and user-friendly for patients. In particular mobile text message reminders are more suitable for chronic patients, as they require few technical skills, can operate without internet connectivity, and are less expensive than other technologies. This study aimed to assess the intention to use mobile text message reminders for medication adherence among hypertensive patients at the Gondar City health facilities. METHODS: A facility-based cross-section

A pilot adaptive trial of text messages, mailed nicotine replacement therapy, and telephone coaching among primary care patients who smoke.

INTRODUCTION: Sequential multiple assignment randomized trials (SMART) inform the design of adaptive treatment interventions. We tested the feasibility of a SMART to deliver a stepped-care intervention among primary care patients who smoked daily. METHODS: In a 12-week pilot SMART (NCT04020718), we tested the feasibility of recruiting and retaining (>80 %) participants to an adaptive intervention starting with cessation text messages (SMS). The study randomly assigned participants (R1) to assessment of quit status, the tailoring variable, after either 4 or 8 weeks of SMS. The study offered co

Observance of preoperative clear fluid fasting in pediatric anesthesia: oral and written information versus text message information. A before-and-after study.

INTRODUCTION: Prolonged fasting before surgery is common in pediatrics. In the literature, it is responsible for hypotension, irritability and postoperative nausea and vomiting. Despite clear instructions given during the preanesthetic consultation, fasting rules are respected in only 30%-40% of cases. We aimed to evaluate the benefit of sending a text message the day before surgery to improve the parents' observance of fasting rules. METHODS: We conducted a before-and-after study at the University Hospital of Poitiers. From August to October 2018, 172 parents of children under 15 years of ag

Cost effectiveness of text messages to reduce methamphetamine use and HIV sexual risk behaviors among men who have sex with men.

Methamphetamine use is highly prevalent among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM) in the United States and has been associated with condomless anal intercourse (CAI), a common route of HIV infection. Text messaging is a very low-cost method of delivery for intervention content. This paper presents a cost-effectiveness analysis of a randomized controlled trial testing three nested methods of text message delivery designed to reduce methamphetamine use and HIV sexual risk behaviors among MSM (Project Tech Support2). From March 2014 to January 2016, 286 non-treatment seeking

Self-monitoring and reminder text messages to increase physical activity in colorectal cancer survivors (Smart Pace): a pilot randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Over 1.3 million people live with colorectal cancer in the United States. Physical activity is associated with lower risk of colorectal cancer recurrence and mortality. Interventions are needed to increase physical activity in colorectal cancer survivors. METHODS: We conducted a 2-arm non-blinded pilot randomized controlled trial at the University of California, San Francisco among 42 individuals who had completed curative-intent treatment for colorectal cancer to determine the feasibility and acceptability of a 12-week (84 days) physical activity intervention using a Fitbit Flex™

Evaluation of the efficacy and safety of text messages targeting adherence to cardiovascular medications in secondary prevention: the txt2heart Colombia randomised controlled trial protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Anti-platelet therapy, angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors/angiotensin II receptor blockers, beta-blockers and statins are cost-effective in patients with atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases (ASCVD) for reducing the risk of ASCVD events. Unfortunately, there is abundant evidence that adherence to these cardiovascular medications is far from ideal. A recent Cochrane review showed a potential beneficial effect of Short Message Service (SMS) interventions on adherence to medication in ASCVD patients. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: The txt2heart study is a pragmatic randomised singl

A telephone- and text-message based telemedical care concept for patients with mental health disorders--study protocol for a randomized, controlled study design.

BACKGROUND: As in other countries worldwide, the prevalence of mental disorders in Germany is high. Although numerically a dense network of in- and outpatient psychiatric health services exists, the availability in rural and remote regions is insufficient. In rural regions, telemedical concepts can be a chance to unburden and complement the existing healthcare system. Telemedical concepts consisting of video or telephone consulting show first positive results, but there are only a few studies with a randomized controlled design. To improve the treatment of patients with mental disorders in rural

A pilot randomized controlled trial assessing the feasibility and preliminary effects of a text message intervention to promote secure storage and disposal of prescription opioids.

BACKGROUND: Unused prescription opioids are a major source of diversion and nonmedical use, yet adoption of secure storage and disposal practices remains low. Scalable behavioral interventions are needed to promote medication safety. We pilot tested a theory-informed short message service (SMS) text-based intervention designed to encourage secure storage during treatment and disposal of unused prescription opioids following treatment. METHODS: We conducted a two-arm, single-blinded randomized controlled pilot trial (June-December 2024) among adults prescribed an opioid medication (≤30 days).
