PURPOSE: Choroidal neovascularization (CNV) often recurs during anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) therapy; however, little is known about the mechanism of vascular regrowth. Vascular regrowth along the empty sleeves of basement membranes was proposed as a mechanism for recurrence after the reversal of VEGF inhibition in tumors. BACKGROUND: Current photodynamic therapy (PDT) for choroidal neovascularization (CNV) uses a standard radiant exposure of 50 J/cm2 at an irradiance of 600 mW/cm2. However, low-intensity PDT with verteporfin for neovascular tissue has been shown to be more effective than regular high-intensity PDT in an animal model of healthy choroids and corneal neovascularization. OBJECTIVE AND BACKGROUND: The aim of the present article is to discuss the potential of gene therapy for thymic hormones as a novel therapeutic strategy to treat dyshomeostatic states associated with athymia, as Di George syndrome, or hypothymic conditions like those associated with AIDS, chronic stress or aging. First we review the advantages of the athymic (nude) mouse as an animal model to implement experimental thymic hormone gene therapy strategies to restore endocrine thymic function. The aging rat, known to be markedly hypothymic, is also considered as an alternative model.

Carbon monoxide (CO) has long been viewed as an environmental pollutant, but recent work points to its role as an endogenous signaling molecule in infection and stress.
