Inhibitory effects of children's toothpastes on Streptococcus mutans, Streptococcus sanguinis and Lactobacillus acidophilus.

AIM: As suppression of Streptococcus mutans in young children may prevent or delay colonisation of the oral cavity, toothbrushing with dentifrices containing anti-S. mutans activity may aid in preventing caries. The aims of this study were to compare the effects of children's dentifrices on the growth of S. mutans and non-mutans bacteria (Streptococcus sanguinis and Lactobacillus acidophilus). MATERIALS AND METHODS: The agar diffusion assay at neutral pH was used to examine the antibacterial activity of commercial dentifrices and their major constituents. RESULTS: Dentifrices containing 1,45

Hexametaphosphate effects on tooth surface conditioning film chemistry--in vitro and in vivo studies.

These studies compared the effects of Crest Dual Action Whitening dentifrice with sodium hexametaphosphate and control commercial dentifrices on the surface chemistry of conditioning film-coated dental enamel in vitro and in vivo. Conditioning film chemistry was studied by measurements of film thickness, ability to wet the surface/surface energy, conditioning film chemical composition and zeta potential. Laboratory and in vivo studies demonstrated that brushing and chemical-only treatment of pellicle-coated enamel surfaces produced marked changes in surface chemistry. Brushing of surfaces with

Fully automated 18F-fluorination of N-succinimidyl-4-[18F]fluorobenzoate ([18F]SFB) for indirect labelling of nanobodies.

N-succinimidyl-4-[18F]fluorobenzoate ([18F]SFB), a widely used labeling agent to introduce the 4-[18F]fluorobenzoyl-prosthetic group, is normally obtained in three consecutive steps from [18F]fluoride ion. Here, we describe an efficient one-step labeling procedure of [18F]SFB starting from a tin precursor. This method circumvents volatile radioactive side-products and simplifies automatization. [18F]SFB was obtained after HPLC purification in a yield of 42 + 4% and a radiochemical purity (RCP) > 99% (n = 6). In addition, we investigate the automation of the coupling of [18F]SFB to a nanobody (

Randomized clinical trial evaluating kinetic benefits of desensitizing agents: Magnitude, onset, and stability of relief.

BACKGROUND: Dentin hypersensitivity (DH) is common, particularly among periodontal patients. This trial evaluated magnitude of desensitizing benefit, onset of action, and complete relief of three dentifrices with distinct desensitizing technologies. METHODS: Healthy adults with DH were enrolled and randomized to one of four dentifrices in this randomized, controlled, double-blind trial: marketed potassium nitrate (KNO3), marketed stannous fluoride (SnF2), experimental 1.5% oxalate, or negative control (NC) monofluorophosphate. Participants brushed with their assigned dentifrice twice daily fo

Antibacterial Effects of a Novel Stannous Fluoride Toothpaste Stabilized With Nitrate and Phosphates (SNaP): In Vitro Study and Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Stannous fluoride has long been an effective antibacterial, anticaries, antisensitivity, and antigingivitis addition to toothpaste formulas. However, in the past its chemical properties in aqueous solution have made it difficult to stabilize with desirable results. The recent development of a novel formulation of 0.454% stannous fluoride stabilized with nitrate and phosphates (SNaP) has resulted in prolonged therapeutic effect without compromising product experience and esthetics. METHODS: Dentifrice antibacterial performance in vitro was determined through bacterial bioenergetics

Pharmacokinetics in the oral cavity: fluoride and other active ingredients.

Modern commercial toothpastes contain therapeutic ingredients to combat various oral conditions, for example, caries, gingivitis, calculus and tooth stain. The efficient delivery and retention of such ingredients in the mouth is essential for good performance. The aim of this chapter is to review the literature on the oral pharmacokinetics of, primarily, fluoride but also other active ingredients, mainly anti-plaque agents. Elevated levels of fluoride have been found in saliva, plaque and the oral soft tissues after use of fluoridated toothpaste, which persist at potentially active concentrati

Effect of amine fluoride-stannous fluoride preparations on oral yeasts in the elderly: a randomised placebo-controlled trial.

OBJECTIVES: Oral yeast infections are an emerging problem among medically compromised and frail elderly. Antifungal drug resistance is also increasing because of an increase in non-albicans Candida strains in these populations. We therefore set out to study, in the randomised-controlled trial setting if the use of a topical amine fluoride-stannous fluoride combination (AmF-SnF2) could control oral Candida growth in the elderly. The hypothesis was based on earlier findings showing that in vitro this combination had antifungal efficacy. METHODS: A total of 194 nursing home residents were random
