The radiological analysis of pes cavus deformity in Charcot Marie Tooth disease.

Charcot Marie Tooth (CMT) is a progressive hereditary peripheral neuropathy. The most prevalent subtype is CMT-1A, wherein patients develop a characteristic cavovarus deformity. We have reviewed a series of standing lateral foot radiographs of patients with foot deformity due to CMT, and found that the hind foot of these patients is in dorsiflexion, not equinus, and that the apparent equinus is due to plantar flexion of the forefoot on the midfoot, and actually represents a cavus deformity.

SMN gene analysis of the spinal form of Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease.

The spinal form of Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (spinal CMT) is a rare genetic disorder of the peripheral nervous system, the genetic basis of which remains unknown. To test the hypothesis that a defect of survival motor neuron (SMN), the determining gene for spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), would result in spinal CMT, 18 unrelated spinal CMT patients were studied. Nine of them were sporadic cases and the other nine belonged to unrelated autosomal dominant pedigrees. None of the 18 patients showed deletions involving SMN exons 7 or 8, the most frequent gene alteration found in SMA. In addition, h

Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease associated with hip dysplasia: a case report.

A 31-year-old woman with a known history of hip dysplasia was found to have Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease following abnormal conduction studies done at the time of surgery. Physical examination in this patient was otherwise normal, and the diagnosis of Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease had not been previously considered. This report demonstrates the importance of keeping in mind the association between hip dysplasia and Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease.

Vincristine treatment triggering the expression of asymptomatic Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease.

A 16-year-old male suffering from Ewing's sarcoma of the pelvis was treated with vincristine as part of his chemotherapeutic protocol. The boy was never known to suffer from any neurological problems. His father had a mild limp, attributed to prolonged "taxi driving," that was never investigated medically. The first course of treatment, which included 2 mg of vincristine, resulted in clinical improvement. However, at the same time the patient developed severe weakness of both upper and lower limbs, areflexia, and gradually a pes cavus deformity. Nerve conduction studies were suggestive of seve

Severe vincristine neuropathy in Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 1A.

BACKGROUND: A general predisposition for vincristine-related neuropathy has been observed in persons with a family history of hereditary neuropathies. METHODS: In a retrospective case series, we investigated the possible association between the DNA rearrangement found in patients with Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disease Type 1A (CMT1A) and susceptibility to the neurotoxicity of vincristine. In selected patients and family members, we performed electrodiagnostic studies and analyzed DNA samples for 17p11.1-12 duplication associated with CMT1A. RESULTS: We describe three families with autosomal domina

[Type II Charcot-Marie-Tooth and dopa-sensitive Parkinson disease].

The occurrence of a dopa-sensitive parkinsonian syndrome 25 years after a neuropathy suggestive of Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type II raised the possibility of a relationship between these two diseases. Apart from Machado-Joseph-Azorean disease, an association of this kind seems to be exceptional and it can not be excluded that it was fortuitous. However, the recent description of 7 familial and sporadic cases of a syndrome characterized by a peripheral neuropathy, familial in 5 of the 7 cases, followed, a few years later, by a dopa-sensitive parkinsonian syndrome, makes it possible to consid

[Carbamazepine-sensitive neuromyotonia and Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease of the neuronal type].

Following an anti-smallpox vaccination a 17 year-old boy developed spontaneous muscular activity with cramps and fasciculations in the lower limbs. There was distal amyotrophy of the lower limbs and pes cavus. Clinical signs suggested a cholinergic hyperfunction. EMG showed a significant spontaneous activity and was neurogenic in the lower limbs. Nerve conduction velocities were consistent with axonal damage. Muscular biopsy showed aspects of chronic denervation. Neuromyotonia disappeared with carbamazepine treatment. This case can be added to the reported associations of neuromyotonia and Cha

Leber's optic neuropathy and Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease. Report of a case.

The case of a patient with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease who developed the acute fundus findings of Leber's optic neuropathy is described. Previous reports have proposed a genetic interrelationship between the two diseases. This relationship has been speculative, however, because the acute fundus findings of Leber's have never been observed in a case of Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease. This case adds support for a suggested genetic relationship between the two diseases. It is also possible that the optic atrophy previously described in Charcot-Marie-Tooth may represent the late findings of Leber's o

Periodontal disease, tooth loss, and oral hygiene among older Americans.

Recent research has suggested that susceptibility to destructive periodontal disease may not be as universal as was previously thought. This report analyzes data from a representative national sample of 11 338 American adults aged 25-74, examined in a national survey in 1971-74. Results showed that 46.1% of those aged 65-74 were edentulous, but half of the dentate persons in that age group were diagnosed as free of destructive periodontal disease. Periodontal (PI) and oral hygiene (OHI-S) index scores in this group were significantly better in those persons who had lost fewest teeth. When pers

[Anatomo-clinical study of a neuronal form of Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease].

A 79 years-old man suffered gait disturbance for more than ten years. During the last year the gait worsened. Twenty days after having developed a right hemiparesis, he died from cardiorespiratory failure. Neurological signs were characterized by cogwheel rigidity, distal paresis and amyotrophy of the legs. E.M.G. demonstrated a denervation; ulnar conduction velocity was 38 m/s. The sural nerve biopsy showed a loss of myelinated fibres and no onion-bulb-like formations. A sister (72 years) and two nephews (51 and 39 years) also suffer gait disturbance. The E.M.G.'s demonstrate denervation of t

Bilateral abductor vocal cord paralysis in Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease.

This report descirbes the unusual association of bilateral abductor vocal cord paralysis (BAbVCP) and Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease in a boy and his natural mother who have been followed for eight years. The boy initially presented with life-threatening respiratory distress at age ten years; BAbVCP was documented by direct laryngoscopy. Mirror laryngoscopy confirmed BAbVCP in the mother. Neurological diagnosis was made by history, physical examination, electromyography, and nerve conduction velocity studies. The BAbVCP may represent an additional genetic marker within the spectrum of heredodegen

Patient-reported disease burden in the Accelerate Clinical Trials in Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disease Study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disease Health Index (CMT-HI) is a disease-specific, patient-reported disease burden measure. As part of an international clinical trial readiness study, individuals with CMT1A (ages 18-75 years) underwent clinical outcome assessments (COAs), including the CMT-HI, to capture their longitudinal perspective on the disease burden. METHODS: Two hundred and fifteen participants underwent serial COAs including the CMT-HI, CMT Functional Outcome Measure (CMT-FOM), CMT Neuropathy Score (CMTNSv2R), and CMT Exam Score (CMTES/CMTES-R). Evaluating general practitioner attitudes towards screening, risk assessment, and diagnosis of periodontal diseases and tooth wear in the UK.

This study investigated UK general dental practitioners' habits and attitudes toward screening, risk assessment, and diagnosis of periodontal diseases and tooth wear in adult patients during routine examinations. Two primary recruiters, UK-based final year post-graduate students enrolled on the MSc in Aesthetic Dentistry at King's College London distributed a piloted, paper-based, 14-statement questionnaire via secondary recruiters to UK general dentists. The latter participants were based at local dental practices or attending post-graduate courses. The secondary recruiters circulated and col
