Investigation of Fluorodeoxyglucose Positron Emission Tomography for the Diagnosis of Solid Pseudopapillary Neoplasm of the Pancreas: A Study Associated With a National Survey of Solid Pseudopapillary Neoplasms.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate the utility of fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomography for solid pseudopapillary neoplasm (SPN) diagnosis. METHODS: The subjects included 53 cases of SPN. We compared the maximal standardized uptake volume (SUVmax) with those of 25 cases of pancreatic duct cancer and 18 cases of pancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasm. In addition, immunopathological testing for SPN with regard to FDG uptake was undertaken. RESULTS: An increase in SUVmax was observed in all tumors with increased tumor diameter. Among tumors of 20 mm or smaller, the SUVmax

Digital subtraction angiography: applications in otolaryngology--head and neck surgery.

Digital electronic technology has made its most notable contribution to radiology in the form of the CT scanners which have so greatly benefited medical practice. Experience with intravenous angiography using a digital fluoroscopy unit developed at the University of Arizona gives promise of a further major benefit in the area of angiography. The majority of examinations are conducted on an outpatient basis with a risk level comparable to that of an intravenous pyelogram. The authors review their experience with this unit, including it's diagnostic and therapeutic applications to congenital and

Clinical Case of Inferior Vena Cava Leiomyoma in a Patient with Thrombocytopenia.

Primary leiomyomas of the vascular system, particularly of the inferior vena cava (IVC), are extremely rare benign vascular tumors, which, due to their extraluminal growth, can mimic tumors of the adjacent organs. The report pre- sents the case of IVC leiomyoma in a patient with a complicated hematological history, with recently treated idiopathic thrombocytopenia, to demonstrate the complexity of the differential diagnosis of retroperitoneal neoplasms. The case clearly demonstrates the limitations in diagnosing IVC tumors, even using modern imaging techniques, in cases of their extraluminal g

Angiography of abdominal leiomyosarcoma.

The spectrum of angiographic findings of abdominal leiomyosarcoma in 33 cases is presented, and the value of angiography in the diagnosis and management of such patients is discussed. Angiographic features of abdominal leiomyosarcomas are different depending upon the site of origin. Small bowel lesions are hypervascular, and those in the stomach and colon moderately vascular. Well circumscribed masses with enlarged feeding arteries and draining veins form the predominant presentation of small bowel leiomyosarcoma. In the retroperitoneum these neoplasms are usually hypovascular to moderately va

Role of Multiphasic Computed Tomography in the Evaluation of Neoplastic Pancreatic Masses: A Single-Center Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: Pancreatic neoplasms are associated with high morbidity and mortality, largely due to late diagnosis and challenges in accurate staging. Multiphasic computed tomography (CT) is a critical imaging tool for evaluating pancreatic masses offering detailed information on lesion characterization and surgical resectability. Precise radiological assessment is vital for treatment planning, and correlating imaging findings with histopathology improves diagnostic efficiency. METHODS: This prospective study was conducted on 50 patients with clinically suspected pancreatic neoplasms who underw

Kaposiform hemangioendothelioma with Kasabach-Merritt syndrome mistaken for child abuse in a newborn.

Kaposiform hemangioendothelioma is a rare vascular neoplasm of childhood that may have an alarming and potentially misleading clinical presentation. Awareness of this entity is important to provide appropriate and immediate medical care. We report the case of a 24-day-old female newborn who presented with a large bruiselike lesion on the left leg. A diagnosis of cellulitis suspected to be secondary to child abuse was made and the patient subsequently was placed in foster care; however, the lesion did not resolve after treatment and relocation. On reevaluation at our institution, physical exami

Primary angiosarcoma of the spleen: an oncological enigma.

Introduction. Primary splenic angiosarcoma is an extremely unusual neoplasm originating from sinusoidal vascular endothelium. Surgical extirpation is the mainstay of treatment of this highly malignant disease. Case Presentation. An 82-year-old woman was admitted with left pleural effusion and a palpable left upper quadrant abdominal mass, secondary to splenomegaly by two large splenic tumors. Classic open splenectomy was performed and angiosarcoma of the spleen was the final histopathological diagnosis, which was primary since no other disease site was revealed. Discussion. The incidence of th

Colour Doppler ultrasound imaging of blood flows variations in neoplastic and non-neoplastic testicular lesions in dogs.

Testicular tumours are the most common neoplasms in male dogs accounting for approximately 90% of all tumours affecting the genitourinary tract. Gray-scale ultrasonography in combination with colour and power Doppler imaging has been well accepted as an accurate technique for assessing scrotal lesions and vascularization of the testis. Colour Doppler sensitivity for low blood flows appears promising in the study of testicular disorders. The aim of this study was to assess if colour and power Doppler ultrasound is a good tool for the investigation of testicular lesions in dogs, to report the so

Littoral Cell Angioma of the Spleen: A Case Report.

Littoral cell angioma (LCA) is a rare, primary vascular tumor of the spleen that originates from the cells lining the venous sinuses of the spleen. Around 150 cases have been reported worldwide, with most reported cases of LCA being non-malignant but with unspecified malignant potential. As of 2022, three cases of malignant LCA have been reported. A 75-year-old male with a history of monoclonal gammopathy of uncertain significance presented with left upper outer quadrant abdominal pain. Ultrasound (US) scan showed a 10.5 cm round, circumscribed mass lesion, with hyperechoic foci, occupying the

[Treatment of a patient with giant solitary fibrous tumor of the left hip].

The authors report surgical treatment of a 59-year-old female with a giant solitary-fibrous tumor of the left hip. Previous excision of hip hemangioma was performed in 2016. Recurrent tumor with fast growth has occurred since 2018. The neoplasm consisted of 2 tumors connected by vascular structures. CT revealed soft tissue neoplasms in the upper third of the left thigh (anterior, medial and dorsal regions). Large tumors with an isthmus along the inner surface had tuberous contours and internal septa. The last ones and walls accumulated contrast agent. No structural damage to femoral muscles wa

Atypical retiform hemangioendothelioma arising in a patient with Milroy disease: a case report and review of the literature.

Retiform hemangioendothelioma (RH) is a rare vascular neoplasm with a high rate of local recurrence and low metastatic potential. We describe an unusual case of RH in a 45-year-old patient with Milroy disease, with a prominent solid component diffusely involving a chronic lymphedematous leg. This case is consistent with the postulated relationship between lymphedema and vascular neoplasms developing as a result of local immune dysfunction, and highlights the need to closely monitor patients with Milroy disease for pathologic changes. Our case highlights a unique example of RH with atypical fea

Follicular dendritic cell sarcoma with paraneoplatic pemphigus: Rare case and a brief review of literature.

Paraneoplastic pemphigus (PNP) is often a fatal autoimmune bullous disease characterized by severe stomatitis, polymorphous skin eruptions, and underlying neoplasms. We describe a patient with PNP associated with follicular dendritic cell sarcoma (FDCS), a rare neoplasm originating from follicular dendritic cells, which are non-lymphoid, non-phagocytic accessory cells of the lymphoid system and play an integral role in regulation of the germinal center reaction and present antigens to B-cells. The presence of rich vascularity around the tumor and few hyalanized vascular follicles found in hist

Postradiation angiosarcoma of the small intestine: a case report and review of literature.

Postradiation angiosarcoma is typically a high-grade sarcoma that presents mainly in the skin and superficial tissues. Postradiation angiosarcoma arising in the small intestine is rare with only 11 cases documented in the English-language literature. Herein, we report a postradiation angiosarcoma of the small intestine 9 years after radiotherapy for uterine cervical adenocarcinoma. The patient presented with symptoms of intestinal obstruction. At exploratory laparotomy, tumor nodules involved the small bowel. Microscopically, the neoplasm was composed of spindled and epithelioid cells arranged

Epithelioid hemangioendothelioma of the head and neck: a clinicopathologic report of twelve cases.

Epithelioid hemangioendothelioma (EH) is a recently described unusual vascular neoplasm of the soft tissues. Apparently identical tumors have also been described in the lung and and liver. Although no previous reports have described these lesions in the head and neck, twelve cases from this region are reported here. There is a wide age distribution throughout adulthood of affected patients. The 4-year-old patient in this series is the youngest thus far reported. There is no sex predilection. The submandibular region is the head and neck site most frequently involved. The unusual histologic app

Reassessment of EUS features in preoperative diagnosis of pancreatic serous cystic neoplasm: Lessons to avoid misdiagnosis.

OBJECTIVES: Pancreatic serous cystic neoplasm (SCN) is a benign cystic neoplasm that is likely to be surgically resected due to preoperative misdiagnosis or tentative diagnosis even using endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS). We aimed to analyze EUS findings of SCN associated with misdiagnosis. METHODS: Between January 2012 and September 2023, histologically confirmed pancreatic SCN were included and EUS features were reviewed. RESULTS: Overall, 294 patients with 300 surgically resected SCNs were included. The median age of the patients was 51 years and 75.9% were females. The lesions were predo

Intravascular central nervous system T-cell lymphoma in a common dolphin (Delphinus delphis) with cerebral infarction.

Lymphoid and haematopoietic neoplasms are rare in cetaceans. This report describes intravascular lymphoma in an adult common dolphin that presented with neurological signs prior to stranding. Intravascular lymphoma is a rare neoplasm previously recorded in humans, dogs, a cat and a horse. The condition is characterized by intravascular neoplastic lymphocytic proliferation, the sequelae of which are dependent on the organ affected. Key pathological findings in this case included multifocal cerebrocortical malacia secondary to vascular occlusion associated with intravascular neoplastic lymphocyt

Primary splenic angiosarcoma associated with anemia, leukocytosis and thrombocytopenia.

Primary angiosarcoma of the spleen is a rare neoplasm arising from endothelial cells. It is an aggressive neoplasm with a poor prognosis. We report a case of 61-year-old Caucasian man who presented with shortness of breath, anemia, leukocytosis, and thrombocytopenia. Ultrasound Sonogram (US) and Computed Tomography (CT) scans revealed a massively enlarged spleen with numerous enhancing hypodense lesions. The spleen was adherent to the omentum, retroperitoneum, and tail of the pancreas. Image-guided Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA) revealed an atypical spindle cell lesion. Resection of the spleen a

Primary intrarenal hemangioma - A series of 39 cases.

Intrarenal hemangiomas lack concise clinicopathologic information, due to the predominance of single case reports and inclusion of other vascular neoplasms and hemangiomas of perirenal, hilar, and renal vein origin. Herein, in this multi-institutional study we evaluate clinicopathologic features of 39 intrarenal hemangiomas. The median age was 62 years (range = 27-94 years; 2:1 male to female ratio), with left-sided predominance (left = 21, right = 13; one case was bilateral). The median tumor size was 1.5 cm (0.2-10 cm). Two cases arose from transplanted kidneys. Most were asymptomatic (n = 3

Cryosurgery re-visited for the removal and destruction of brain, spinal and orbital tumours.

Advances in neuroimaging and cryosurgical techniques have prompted us to re-evaluate the potential of cryosurgical techniques for the removal and the destruction of various neoplasms. We have used cryosurgical instrumentation to remove tumours in the brain, spine and orbit in 71 patients without complications. Cryosurgery was used to facilitate removal and extraction in 64 and to destroy residual neoplasms when removal was incomplete in 7. Intraoperative real time ultrasonic imaging permitted precise delimitation of tumours from surrounding tissues and allowed monitoring during the production
