Virtual reality treatment in acrophobia: a comparison with exposure in vivo.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effectiveness of low-budget virtual reality exposure versus exposure in vivo in a within-group design in 10 individuals suffering from acrophobia. Virtual reality exposure was found to be at least as effective as exposure in vivo on anxiety and avoidance as measured with the Acrophobia Questionnaire (AQ), and even more effective on the Attitude towards Heights Questionnaire (AHQ). The present study shows that virtual reality exposure can be effective with relatively cheap hardware and software on stand-alone computers currently on the market. Fu

Virtual reality-based training for the diagnosis of prostate cancer.

Prostate malignancies are the second leading cause of cancer deaths among men. The most common method of detecting this disease is digital rectal examination (DRE). Current DRE training is inadequate, since the number of patients that students can practice on is limited. Furthermore, allied care personnel do not train in screening for prostate cancer. Finally, there is no objective way to follow the improvement in DRE skills for medical personnel. This paper presents a virtual reality-based simulator that addresses the above problems. The prototype consists of a PHANToM haptic interface which

Closing the Trauma and Critical Care Gap: A Paradigm Shift through Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality.

A nationwide surgeon shortage, particularly with general surgeons and trauma surgeons, continues to plague the civilian and military systems readiness. To fill this shortcoming, we provide a narrative review describing current and potential uses of augmented reality and virtual reality (AR/VR) for synthetic training environments which could significantly improve the Army's wartime medical readiness through improved skills of surgeons and non-surgeon providers. Multiple studies demonstrate the potential benefits of AR/VR in cost, time, and critical medical skills for enhanced care delivery. Whi

Mixed reality in oral and maxillofacial surgery: a symbiosis of virtual and augmented reality or a pointless technological gadget?

INTRODUCTION: Mixed reality (MR) represents a new evolution in technological development that combines both virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) to create a blend of the physical and digital worlds. However, the potential role of MR in preoperative diagnostics in oral and maxillofacial surgery has not been scientifically investigated and remains generally unclear. This article presents a workflow that integrated MR in its scheme. It also evaluates the potential benefit of MR compared with its predecessors, VR and AR. MATERIAL AND METHODS: MR technology was used to plan the surgic

Emotion-Aware Virtual Reality Through Multimodal ECG and Postural Fusion.

Immersive Virtual Reality (VR) environments are increasingly adopted in clinical psychology and stress-management contexts; however, their therapeutic effectiveness depends on the system's ability to understand and dynamically respond to users' affective states. Emotional regulation plays a key role in psychological resilience, directly influencing stress coping mechanisms, cognitive performance, and overall mental well-being. Despite recent advances, automatic recognition of scenario-associated affective conditions in VR remains challenging because head-mounted displays occlude facial feature

Attentional Bias During a Novel Alcohol Cue Virtual Reality Paradigm.

BACKGROUND: Attentional bias to alcohol cues is largely investigated using pictorial cues (i.e., two-dimensional images). The addition of eye-tracking metrics has improved these investigations yet are limited by a lack of naturalistic cues. Virtual reality (VR) can theoretically improve ecological validity through three-dimensional alcohol object presentation while utilizing eye-tracking metrics. This report sought to test the construct validity of the Alcohol Cue VR paradigm in evoking subjective craving and attentional bias through measurement of eye-gaze characteristics. METHODS: Participa
