Neural correlates associated with impaired global motion perception in cerebral visual impairment (CVI).

Cerebral visual impairment (CVI) is associated with a wide range of visual perceptual deficits including global motion processing. However, the underlying neurophysiological basis for these impairments remain poorly understood. We investigated global motion processing abilities in individuals with CVI compared to neurotypical controls using a combined behavioral and multi-modal neuroimaging approach. We found that CVI participants had a significantly higher mean motion coherence threshold (determined using a random dot kinematogram pattern simulating optic flow motion) compared to controls. Us

Late disruption of central visual field disrupts peripheral perception of form and color.

Evidence from neuroimaging and brain stimulation studies suggest that visual information about objects in the periphery is fed back to foveal retinotopic cortex in a separate representation that is essential for peripheral perception. The characteristics of this phenomenon have important theoretical implications for the role fovea-specific feedback might play in perception. In this work, we employed a recently developed behavioral paradigm to explore whether late disruption to central visual space impaired perception of color. In the first experiment, participants performed a shape discriminat

tDCS recovers depth perception in adult amblyopic rats and reorganizes visual cortex activity.

Amblyopia or lazy eye is a neurodevelopmental disorder that arises during the infancy and is caused by the interruption of binocular sensory activity before maturation of the nervous system. This impairment causes long-term deterioration of visual skills, particularly visual acuity and depth perception. Although visual function recovery has been supposed to be decreased with age as consequence of reduced neuronal plasticity, recent studies have shown that it is possible to promote plasticity and neurorestoration in the adult brain. Thus, transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has been

Contributions of local speech encoding and functional connectivity to audio-visual speech perception.

Seeing a speaker's face enhances speech intelligibility in adverse environments. We investigated the underlying network mechanisms by quantifying local speech representations and directed connectivity in MEG data obtained while human participants listened to speech of varying acoustic SNR and visual context. During high acoustic SNR speech encoding by temporally entrained brain activity was strong in temporal and inferior frontal cortex, while during low SNR strong entrainment emerged in premotor and superior frontal cortex. These changes in local encoding were accompanied by changes in direct

Human Occipital and Parietal GABA Selectively Influence Visual Perception of Orientation and Size.

GABA is the primary inhibitory neurotransmitter in human brain. The level of GABA varies substantially across individuals, and this variability is associated with interindividual differences in visual perception. However, it remains unclear whether the association between GABA level and visual perception reflects a general influence of visual inhibition or whether the GABA levels of different cortical regions selectively influence perception of different visual features. To address this, we studied how the GABA levels of parietal and occipital cortices related to interindividual differences in

Language and visual perception associations: meta-analytic connectivity modeling of Brodmann area 37.

BACKGROUND: Understanding the functions of different brain areas has represented a major endeavor of neurosciences. Historically, brain functions have been associated with specific cortical brain areas; however, modern neuroimaging developments suggest cognitive functions are associated to networks rather than to areas. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this paper was to analyze the connectivity of Brodmann area (BA) 37 (posterior, inferior, and temporal/fusiform gyrus) in relation to (1) language and (2) visual processing. METHODS: Two meta-analyses were initially conducted (first level analysis).

Reduced contextual effects on visual contrast perception in schizophrenia and bipolar affective disorder.

BACKGROUND: The salience of a visual stimulus is often reduced by nearby stimuli, an effect known as surround suppression of perceived contrast, which may help in locating the borders of an object. Weaker surround suppression has been observed in schizophrenia but it is unclear whether this abnormality is present in other mental disorders with similar symptomatology, or is evident in people with genetic liability for schizophrenia. METHOD: By examining surround suppression among subjects with schizophrenia or bipolar affective disorder, their unaffected biological relatives and healthy contro

Direct control of visual perception with phase-specific modulation of posterior parietal cortex.

We examined the causal relationship between the phase of alpha oscillations (9-12 Hz) and conscious visual perception using rhythmic TMS (rTMS) while simultaneously recording EEG activity. rTMS of posterior parietal cortex at an alpha frequency (10 Hz), but not occipital or sham rTMS, both entrained the phase of subsequent alpha oscillatory activity and produced a phase-dependent change on subsequent visual perception, with lower discrimination accuracy for targets presented at one phase of the alpha oscillatory waveform than for targets presented at the opposite phase. By extrinsically manipu

People watching: visual, motor, and social processes in the perception of human movement.

Successful social behavior requires the accurate perception and interpretation of other peoples' actions. In the last decade, significant progress has been made in understanding how the human visual system analyzes bodily motion. Neurophysiological studies have identified two neural areas, the superior temporal sulcus (STS) and the premotor cortex, which play key roles in the visual perception of human movement. Patterns of neural activity in these areas are reflective of psychophysical measures of visual sensitivity to human movement. Both vary as a function of stimulus orientation and global

Visual perception and memory impairments in children at risk of nonverbal learning disabilities.

Visuospatial working memory (VSWM) and visual perception were examined in two groups aged 11-13, one with children displaying symptoms of nonverbal learning disability (NLD) (n = 18) and the other a control group without learning disabilities (n = 18). The two groups were matched for general verbal abilities, age, gender, and socioeconomic level. The children were presented with VSWM tests involving visual and spatial-simultaneous processes, and also with a classical visual illusion, a classical ambiguous figure, as well as visual perception tests specifically devised for the present study. Visual recalibration of auditory spatial perception: two separate neural circuits for perceptual learning.

A remarkable example of rapid perceptual learning is the visual recalibration of auditory spatial perception, which can result in either a bias (ventriloquism after-effect) or an improvement (multisensory enhancement) in auditory localization. Here, we examine the possibility that these after-effects might depend on two distinct neural pathways (geniculostriate vs. collicular-extrastriate). To this end, patients with a lesion of the striate cortex (hemianopic patients) or temporoparietal cortex (neglect patients) were asked to localize weak sounds, before and after a brief exposure to repetiti

Gravity and observer's body orientation influence the visual perception of human body postures.

Since human behavior and perception have evolved within the Earth's gravitational field, humans possess an internal model of gravity. Although gravity is known to influence the visual perception of moving objects, the evidence is less clear concerning the visual perception of static objects. We investigated whether a visual judgment of the stability of human body postures (static postures of a human standing on a platform and tilted in the roll plane) may also be influenced by gravity and by the participant's orientation. Pictures of human body postures were presented in different orientations

MEG phase follows conscious perception during binocular rivalry induced by visual stream segregation.

We have investigated an unusual form of binocular rivalry between two images that are flickered one to each eye, but are never presented simultaneously to the observer. The images were presented in alternation, with a brief dark period between the images. When the flicker frequency was < 5 Hz, the subjects primarily experienced a unitary flicker that alternated between the two images. When the flicker frequency was > 5 Hz, the subjects primarily experienced two single-image flickers that rival. We investigated magnetoencephalography (MEG) responses at the flicker frequency of the rival stimuli

Transsaccadic perception of translating objects: effects of landmark objects and visual field position.

Previously Gysen, De Graef, and Verfaillie [Vision Research 42 (2002) 379] showed that, with stimulus displays presenting one stationary and one translating object, sensitivity for intrasaccadic displacements was higher for translating than for stationary objects. In the present paper the importance of the relative encoding of the path of the translating object towards the stationary object is investigated. In three experiments we compared detection of intrasaccadic displacements of translating objects in relative motion (moving towards the landmark object) and translating objects moving in is

Using visual inquiry to reveal differences in nursing students' perception of case management.

An exploratory, qualitative study of 24 senior generic nursing students (GNSs) and 23 practicing registered nurse baccalaureate students (PRNSs) was conducted to evaluate students' perceptions about case management for community-based children with disabilities, and to examine the differences in the two student groups' perceptions utilizing the visual inquiry method. For a class project, the students used words and photographs to show how they solved one problem for a family caring for a child with a disability in the community. All students agreed on the overall theme, home environment; howev

Effects of a remedial program on visual-motor perception in spina bifida children.

Most studies dealing with spina bifida children concentrate on medical or physical factors, largely ignoring any psychosocial and educational consequences. The present study assessed the effect of a remedial program on visual-motor perception in spina bifida children. Thirty-six spina bifida boys and girls (mean age 82.87 months) with a myelomeningocele and an associated hydrocephalus were assigned randomly to either a control, attention-placebo, or experimental group. Following the administration of the Frostig Program for the Development of Visual Perception, the experimental group significa

Muscle activation color information facilitates visual perception in action observation and motor imagery.

This eye-tracking study investigates how simulated muscle activation color visualization shapes visual perception during Action Observation and Motor Imagery (AO + MI) for motor skill learning. In a mixed-design experiment (N = 40), we manipulated visual cues (with/without muscle colors) and task type (AO/AO + MI) to examine their effects on gaze behavior and cognitive load. Results indicate that while pure AO induced a higher cognitive load (evidenced by larger pupil diameters), the experimental group receiving muscle color cues exhibited longer fixations, larger saccades, and more structured

Fruit-stem structural visual perception for picking point localization in strawberry harvesting robots.

In ridge-cultivated strawberry environments, significant scale variation between fruits and stems, severe occlusion, and high missed-detection rates for small or slender targets pose major challenges to accurate picking point localization. This study proposes a fruit-stem oriented detection and picking point localization method based on an improved YOLOv11n-OBB model. Specifically, an enhanced model termed FSGE-OBB is developed. A Feature Fusion Lite Module (FFLM) is introduced to strengthen cross-layer interaction between shallow spatial details and deep semantic features, thereby improving m

The Diverse Role of ipRGCs in Visual Perception Beyond Non-Image-Forming Functions.

The intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (ipRGCs) are the third class of photoreceptors apart from rods and cones, containing the photopigment melanopsin and are characterized into different subtypes (M1-M6) that support conscious visual perception. They transmit the light information to the brain through complex circuits serving both non-image-forming and image-forming functions. Of the total population, there are four main ipRGCs, such as M2, M4, M5 and M6 that project substantially to the image-forming visual pathway and target the dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus (dLGN). Visual perception in adults with CP - assessment and individual differences: An exploratory study.

OBJECTIVE: Visual perception is frequently impaired in individuals with cerebral palsy (CP). Little is known about the range of visual perceptual impairments that may occur in adults with CP, and few studies have investigated performance at the individual level. Here, we aim to characterize visual perceptual functions in a group of adults with CP. METHOD: 21 participants with CP and 40 neurotypical control participants, aged 18-40 years, were assessed with a range of visual perceptual tests commonly used in neuropsychological practice. The tests were selected to make sure that individuals wit
