Traditional vs wireless intragastric pH monitoring: are the two techniques comparable?

BACKGROUND: Few data are available comparing intragastric pH measured with the traditional catheter-based and the more recent wireless system (Bravo), and also comparing intraesophageal and intragastric pH during reflux events. Aims of our study were to elucidate these points. METHODS: Eleven subjects with functional dyspepsia underwent placement of a Bravo capsule 9 cm below the squamo-columnar junction (SCJ) and of a dual-electrode catheter, so that the distal electrode was located 9 cm below and the proximal one 6 cm above the SCJ. KEY RESULTS: The wireless system showed lower intragastri

A Dual-Purpose Microwave-Optical Component for Wireless Capsule Endoscopy: A Feasibility Study by Radio Link Analysis.

Wireless capsule endoscopy (WCE) is the only option for non-invasive small intestine disease diagnostics. However, the small size of the capsules poses a major design challenge for engineers since multiple optical and electrical components must reside inside the capsules. This article proposes a space-saving dual-purpose component utilized in both optical image capturing and microwave wireless data transmission of a WCE capsule at the 915 MHz industrial-scientific-medical band. The optical performance is verified through ray-tracing simulations, whereas the microwave operation is demonstrated

Wearable, Breathable, and Wireless Gas Sensor Enables Highly Selective Exhaled Ammonia Detection and Real-Time Noninvasive Illness Diagnosis.

Wearable gas sensors capable of real-time analysis of exhaled breath have been identified as ideal devices for noninvasive illness diagnosis. However, due to their inherent rigidity and brittleness, as well as high cross-sensitivity, conventional semiconductor gas sensors face significant challenges in achieving high flexibility, robustness, and selective exhaled breath analysis. Herein, we propose a wearable gas sensor by anchoring a SnS2 nanosheets/polyaniline (PANI) sensing layer in situ onto a permeable and flexible yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) nanofiber substrate for the analysis of e

A flexible and highly sensitive organic electrochemical transistor-based biosensor for continuous and wireless nitric oxide detection.

As nitric oxide (NO) plays significant roles in a variety of physiological processes, the capability for real-time and accurate detection of NO in live organisms is in great demand. Traditional assessments of NO rely on indirect colorimetric techniques or electrochemical sensors that often comprise rigid constituent materials and can hardly satisfy sensitivity and spatial resolution simultaneously. Here, we report a flexible and highly sensitive biosensor based on organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) capable of continuous and wireless detection of NO in biological systems. By modifying

A wearable device for monitoring and prevention of repetitive ankle sprain.

This study presents the design and implementation of a wearable wireless device, connected to a smart phone, which monitors and prevents repetitive ankle sprain due to chronic ankle instability (CAI). The device prevents this common foot injury by electrical stimulation of the peroneal muscles using surface electrodes which causes dorsiflexion of the foot. This is done after measuring ankle kinematics using inertial motion sensors and predicting ankle sprain. The prototype implemented here has a fast response time of 7 msec which enables prevention of ankle sprain before ligament damage occurs

Flexible Wireless Passive Resonance Ring Sensor for Nondestructive Crack Monitoring of Metal Structures.

Despite the aim of meeting the demand for long-term online monitoring of structural cracks in fields such as infrastructure, rail transit, aerospace and others, traditional detection methods fail to realize passive wireless, flexible conformal and non-contact measurement. This paper proposes a flexible wireless passive crack sensor based on resonant rings. Taking polyimide (PI) as the substrate, the sensor integrates a sensitive interdigital resonant ring structure. Variations in crack width disturb the electromagnetic field, which further leads to a resonant frequency shift to realize crack w

Wide-Angle Stable Transmissive Focusing Metasurfaces for OAM Vortex Waves in Wireless Communications.

Orbital angular momentum (OAM) vortex waves have become a promising technology for future 6G high-capacity wireless communications. However, the inherent propagation divergence and performance degradation under angular deviation severely restrict their practical applications. This paper proposes a transmissive focusing metasurface that maintains stable OAM vortex wave generation under angular deviation. By employing a quadratic phase distribution, the proposed design fundamentally eliminates the axial focal shift caused by oblique incidence and maintains stable focusing performance. A three-me
