Screening Injured Workers for Risk of Extended Work Absence and Work Disability: Understanding the Evidence.

OBJECTIVES: Most individuals with work-related musculoskeletal disorders return to work in a medically predictable timeframe. For some, psychosocial and work factors influence work loss. Clinicians often lack knowledge and skills to identify and manage risks. This paper explores evidence regarding multidimensional tools (Orebro Musculoskeletal Pain Questionnaire, STarT Back Screening Tool) and ancillary assessments to identify at-risk patients. METHODS: A multidisciplinary ACOEM member group composed a narrative review regarding feasibility and validity of screening injured workers. RESULTS:

The Impact of Spinal Cord Stimulation on Patients' Ability to Work and Work-Related Outcomes.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic low back pain is one of the most common causes of absence from work. This not only has economic consequences but also affects the mental health of patients. Furthermore, returning to work is one of the main concerns of patients with chronic pain. Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) has shown its effectiveness in pain reduction and quality of life in many studies. Work-related outcomes have often been neglected or only marginally documented. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to examine specific work-related data of the patients before and after surgery and to assess the influ

Temporal work stressors and satisfaction with work, life and health among health professionals in Switzerland.

BACKGROUND: Working in a hospital can be both rewarding and stressful. Whether one or the other is dominant depends on a number of factors ranging from shift work, physical demands, responsibilities and time pressure to job autonomy, work climate and leisure time. AIM: This study aimed to examine associations between temporal work stressors and satisfaction with work, life and health among health professionals in general, and nurses and physicians in particular. Associations were further investigated for possible mediating and intervening factors. METHODS: Cross-sectional survey data on 1232

Assault predicts time away from work after claims for work-related mild traumatic brain injury.

INTRODUCTION: Workplace violence carries a substantial economic loss burden. Up to 10% of all traumatic brain injury (TBI) admissions result from physical assault. There remains a paucity of research on assault as a mechanism of injury, taking into account sex, and its association with work re-entry. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to characterise, by sex, the sample of workers who had sustained a work-related mild TBI (wr-mTBI) and to assess the independent influence of assault, as a mechanism of injury, on time away from work. METHODS: A population-based retrospective cohort of worke

Work Sectors with High Risk for Work-Related Musculoskeletal Disorders in Korean Men and Women.

BACKGROUND: To identify work sectors with high risk for work-related musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) in Korean men and women. METHODS: We analyzed nationwide data to identify ergonomic risk factors in Korean employees. In particular, we analyzed data on exposure to five ergonomic risk factors (painful/tiring postures, lifting/moving heavy materials, standing/walking, repetitive hand/arm movements, and hand/arm vibration) according to employment sector, sex, and age, using the 2014 Fourth Korean Working Conditions Survey. We also used workers' compensation data on work-related MSDs in 2010, w

Work-focused treatment of common mental disorders and return to work: a comparative outcome study.

The aim of this study was to compare the effectiveness of two individual-level psychotherapy interventions: (a) treatment as usual consisting of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and (b) work-focused CBT (W-CBT) that integrated work aspects early into the treatment. Both interventions were carried out by psychotherapists with employees on sick leave because of common mental disorders (depression, anxiety, or adjustment disorder). In a quasi-experimental design, 12-month follow-up data of 168 employees were collected. The CBT group consisted of 79 clients, the W-CBT group of 89. Outcome measur

Shift Work and Working at Night in Relation to Breast Cancer Incidence.

BACKGROUND: Night shift work has been classified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer as a probable carcinogen in humans. Several studies have assessed night shift work in relation to breast cancer risk, with inconsistent results. METHODS: In the prospective Sister Study cohort, current and past occupational history was collected for 48,451 participants. We used Cox proportional hazards models to estimate adjusted HRs and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for the association between baseline work schedule characteristics and incident breast cancer. RESULTS: During follow-up (mean =

Gastrointestinal complaints in shift-working and day-working nurses in Iran.

BACKGROUND: There is evidence in the scientific literature of the adverse physiological and psychological effects of shift work. The work of nurses in hospitals is connected with shift and night work. Several publications have described gastrointestinal disturbances in shift workers. The aim of this study was to compare the frequency of gastrointestinal (GI) complaints of nurses on a rotating shift with that of nurses on a regular day shift. METHODS: The study involved 160 nurses (133 working in shifts and at night and 27 working on day shifts) in the Shahid Beheshti Hospital in Kashan, Iran.

Working in health and safety at work: reflections on the construction of an integrated policy.

Interventions in work environments, processes, and situations encompass the prevention of diseases and accidents and workers' health promotion. Historically, these actions were originally the responsibility of the Ministry of Labor, being extended to the Ministry of Health, and later to the Ministry of Labor. The aim of this study was to understand and give visibility to the work of the actors working in the different sectors and institutions involved in health and safety at work in the municipality of São Paulo and gain an insight into the barriers to intersectorality and the consequences of

My Mind is Working Overtime-Towards an Integrative Perspective of Psychological Detachment, Work-Related Rumination, and Work Reflection.

In the literature on occupational stress and recovery from work, several facets of thinking about work during off-job time have been conceptualized. However, research on the focal concepts is currently rather diffuse. In this study we take a closer look at the five most well-established concepts: (1) psychological detachment, (2) affective rumination, (3) problem-solving pondering, (4) positive work reflection, and (5) negative work reflection. More specifically, we scrutinized (1) whether the five facets of work-related rumination are empirically distinct, (2) whether they yield differential

The Effect of Playful Work Design on Psychological Needs and Work Outcomes: A Video-Vignette Experiment.

Modern work challenges highlight the necessity for proactive strategies to maintain engagement and performance. As one such proactive strategy, playful work design (PWD) enables employees to build fun and competition into their tasks to stay engaged in monotonous or demanding conditions. Although diary and longitudinal research link PWD to positive outcomes, experimental evidence isolating its core functionality is scarce. Grounded in the Job Demands-Resources model and Self-Determination Theory, this preregistered study provides one of the first experimental assessments of PWD, using a betwee

The Cancer and Work Scale (CAWSE): Assessing Return to Work Likelihood and Employment Sustainability After Cancer.

Background: Returning to and sustaining employment after cancer presents significant challenges for individuals touched by cancer (ITBC). While vocational rehabilitation and workplace accommodations are critical, existing return to work (RTW) assessments lack cancer-specific considerations, limiting their clinical and occupational utility. Purpose: This study aimed to develop and validate the Cancer and Work Scale (CAWSE), a psychometrically robust tool designed to assess RTW likelihood and employment sustainability among ITBC, while also providing avenues for targeted interventions. Methods:

The crossroads of work and home: linkages between smoke-free policies at work and household environments.

BACKGROUND: Tobacco use causes over eight million global deaths annually, with seven million directly attributed to tobacco use and 1.2 million to second hand smoke (SHS). Smoke-free environments are crucial to counter SHS. Although India banned smoking in public places in 2008, SHS exposure remains high. Studies have noted that limiting smoking in workplaces, restaurants, etc., helps to reduce overall smoking and reduce SHS exposure. Under this background, the study explores the linkages between smoke-free workplaces and living in smoke-free homes in India. METHODS: The two rounds of the GAT

Work Stress, Work-Related Rumination, and Depressive Symptoms in University Teachers: Buffering Effect of Self-Compassion.

PURPOSE: The association between work stress and depressive symptoms has been well documented. More research is still needed to further investigate the underlying explanatory process mechanism and the potential protective function of personal resource in attenuating the negative effect of work stress on mental health. To address this gap and informed by the stress process model and emotion regulation theory, the present study examined the indirect role of work-related rumination and the buffering effect of self-compassion in university teachers, a population with increased vulnerabilities for b
