Better working conditions won by 'nurse wave' action: Japanese nurses' experience of getting a new law by their militant campaign.

Japanese nurses, like their counterparts in many other countries, are suffering from staff shortages and severe working conditions. The Japan Federation of Medical Workers' Unions (Nihon Iroren) launched a campaign in 1989 for nurses called the 'Nurse Wave'. Their demands were many: to increase the numbers of nursing staff, the regulation of night shifts, the implementation of a five-day working week everywhere, a fair appraisal of nurses' work, better vocational training, etc. Nurses in white uniforms assembled at meetings, marched and took part in nation-wide strikes. They collected over 5.4

Prevalence of work-related health conditions among hotel housekeepers: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Hotel housekeepers are exposed to high physical workload, repetitive tasks, time pressure, and limited social recognition. These occupational conditions may increase the risk of work-related health problems, particularly musculoskeletal disorders, and negatively affect functional capacity and long-term work sustainability. The objective of this systematic review was to synthesise the available evidence on the most prevalent work-related health conditions among hotel housekeepers and to examine their association with work-related risk factors. METHODS: A systematic review was condu

Shifting Expectations of Novel Immunotherapy Treatments in Oncology: Practitioners' and Patients' Calibration Work in Conditions of Uncertainty.

Immunotherapy cancer treatments stimulate individuals' immune systems to target and kill cancer, with the potential to extend survival time for individuals living with some forms of advanced cancer. Immunotherapies, however, generate uncertainties in relation to predicting prognosis and managing toxicities and the emergence of side effects during and post-treatment. Drawing on interviews with practitioners and patients in an oncology clinic in the United Kingdom, this paper examines how these uncertainties, defined as epistemic and temporal, are articulated and negotiated in a wider context of

Physical conditioning as part of a return to work strategy to reduce sickness absence for workers with back pain.

BACKGROUND: Physical conditioning as part of a return to work strategy aims to improve work status for workers on sick leave due to back pain. This is the second update of a Cochrane Review (originally titled 'Work conditioning, work hardening and functional restoration for workers with back and neck pain') first published in 2003, updated in 2010, and updated again in 2013. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effectiveness of physical conditioning as part of a return to work strategy in reducing time lost from work and improving work status for workers with back pain. Further, to assess which aspects

MATERIAL AND METHODS: The experiment was carried out in the spring on 70 Wistar male rats. Three groups (30 animals) were in natural light conditions. One of them was not affected. The other two groups were subjected to exercise and 30 minutes before it either saline or mexidol was administered intramuscularly. Behavioral analysis of NR2C knockout mouse reveals deficit in acquisition of conditioned fear and working memory.

N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors play an important role in excitatory neurotransmission and mediate synaptic plasticity associated with learning and memory. NMDA receptors are composed of two NR1 and two NR2 subunits and the identity of the NR2 subunit confers unique electrophysiologic and pharmacologic properties to the receptor. The precise role of NR2C-containing receptors in vivo is poorly understood. We have performed a battery of behavioral tests on NR2C knockout/nβ-galactosidase knock-in mice and found no difference in spontaneous activity, basal anxiety, forced-swim immobility, no

Occupational therapy interventions for work-related injuries and conditions of the forearm, wrist, and hand: a systematic review.

A systematic review of the literature related to effective occupational therapy interventions in rehabilitation of individuals with work-related forearm, wrist, and hand injuries and illnesses was conducted as part of the Evidence-Based Literature Review Project of the American Occupational Therapy Association. This review provides a comprehensive overview and analysis of 36 studies that addressed many of the interventions commonly used in hand rehabilitation. Findings reveal that the use of occupation-based activities has reasonable yet limited evidence to support its effectiveness. This revi

[Disability, the risk of disability and changes in work capacity-- unacceptable conditions for insurance in occupational injuries and diseases].

According to Croatian legislation disability, risk of disability and altered work capacity are prerequisites for recognition of job injuries, occupational diseases, and, consequently, of the worker's special rights. That is also valid for all areas of insurance. The legislation, if applied, would make it impossible for a great number of insured workers to realize their particular rights based on work related health damage, especially in the field of health insurance and reinsurance of health care costs. Health insurance boards, along with insurance companies, manage by evading the condition of

Psychosocial working conditions, trajectories of disability, and the mediating role of cognitive decline and chronic diseases: A population-based cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Unfavorable psychosocial working conditions have been associated with cognitive decline and chronic diseases, both of which may subsequently accelerate functional dependence. This study aimed to investigate the association between job demand-control-support combinations and trajectories of disability in later life and to further explore the role of cognitive decline and the co-occurrence of chronic diseases in mediating this association. METHODS AND FINDINGS: In this cohort study, 2,937 community dwellers aged 60+ years (mean age 73 ± 10.6; 62.9% female) residing in the Kungsholme
