Schmallenberg virus (SBV) emerged across Europe in 2011 and Belgium was among the first countries affected. In this study, published findings are combined with new data from veterinary surveillance networks and the Belgian reference laboratory for SBV at the Veterinary and Agrochemical Research centre (CODA-CERVA) to reconstruct the epidemic in Belgium. First retrospective cases of SBV were reported by veterinarians that observed decreased milk yield and fever in dairy cattle in May 2011. The number of SBV suspicions subsequently increased in adult cattle in August 2011. That month, first SBV

Leptospirosis is one of the world's major neglected tropical zoonotic diseases (NTZDs), implicated in animal health and welfare with economic consequences for livestock production. This study aims to estimate the seroprevalence of Leptospira spp. and identify potential risk factors in small ruminant herds. This epidemiological cross-sectional study was conducted in Nuevo León, a semi-arid region of Mexico. A total of 389 blood samples from goats and 385 from sheep older than eight months were randomly collected from 128 herds. Anti-Leptospira antibodies were detected using the microscopic aggl

This study aimed to identify factors associated with pregnancy loss in lactating crossbred beef cows managed under extensive conditions. The research was conducted in three management sectors of a commercial farm located in Boquerón, Paraguay. A total of 1554 reproductive records from Brangus and F1 Zebu crossbred cows, diagnosed as pregnant at approximately 30 days of gestation, were analyzed. Cows were bred by fixed-time artificial insemination (FTAI) followed by exposure to cleanup bulls. Pregnancy status was evaluated by ultrasonography at 30-day intervals from 30 days of gestation until d

Vitamin and mineral levels in sheep and goat herds experiencing abortions in East Azerbaijan, northwest Iran, were studied. Between November 2023 and February 2024, 373 blood samples and 62 samples from aborted fetuses in various cities were collected. To find out whether a lack of selenium and copper in mothers led to heart and brain problems in their fetuses. Sheep and goats were mainly raised in a semi-intensive system, grazing from spring to mid-autumn and keeping indoors during winter. Sheep and goat flocks were categorized by size: small (1-100 sheep), medium (101-300 sheep), and large (

Infectious sporadic abortions in cattle are mainly caused by opportunistic bacteria and fungi usually present in environmental or gastrointestinal and reproductive microbiota of healthy animals. A retrospective analysis was carried out to evaluate the main opportunistic microorganisms involved in bovine abortions recorded at INTA Balcarce (Argentina) from 1997 to 2023, accounting for 2.2% of the total diagnosed etiologies of bovine abortion. The opportunistic agents identified as the cause of abortion in 29 fetuses were bacteria (90%) and fungi (10%). Escherichia coli (n = 8), Trueperella pyog

Infectious reproductive diseases pose a significant economic threat to sheep and goat operations. Maintaining records, a defined breeding season, and recognizing deviations from normal are crucial to herd health programs. Signs of suboptimal fertility, such as repeat breeding, unexpected open females, and abnormal gestational distributions, warrant further investigation. Important causes of infectious abortion discussed include chlamydiosis (enzootic abortion), coxiellosis, campylobacteriosis, toxoplasmosis, and brucellosis. Given the potential zoonotic nature of abortion in small ruminants, p

Neosporosis and toxoplasmosis are important parasitic causes of abortions in small ruminants. This study verified the occurrence of these diseases in sheep fetuses from Santa Catarina State, Southern Brazil from 2015 to 2022. Sheep fetuses were necropsied with organ sampling for histopathology, and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for Neospora caninum and Toxoplasma gondii using the Nc5 and SAG2 targets, respectively, in frozen brain tissue. Microbiological culture and RT-PCR for Pestivirus were conducted to discard other abortion causes. One positive fetus for toxoplasmosis was genotyped using

BACKGROUND: High spontaneous miscarriage rate in yak, especially during late pregnancy, have caused a great economic loss to herdsmen living in the Qinghai-Tibet plateau. However, the mechanism underlying spontaneous miscarriage is still poorly understood. In the present study, placenta protein markers were identified to elucidate the pathological reasons for yak spontaneous miscarriage through isobaric tags for relative and absolute quantification (iTRAQ) proteomic technology and bioinformatic approaches.
RESULTS: Subsequently, a total of 415 differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) were ide

Cystic hygroma (hygroma cysticum) is a malformation that has not yet been described as a cause of early pregnancy loss in equines. The condition is a congenital anomaly occurring during embryogenesis due to a failure in which the primitive lymphatic sac does not reach the venous system at the jugular vein, resulting in a lymphatic stasis that starts in the neck region and continues to the rest of the body. From 2015 to 2020, a total of 5,730 ultrasound examinations were performed in mares from 43 different horse farms and embryo transfer farms when sexing pregnancies. In 12 pregnant mares, a s

We compared pregnancy rates in beef heifers resynchronized 14 days after the first timed-artificial insemination (TAI) using a P4 intravaginal device associated with either long-acting injectable progesterone (iP4) or estradiol benzoate (EB). Braford and Brangus heifers were submitted to a TAI (D0). On D14, all animals were given a P4 intravaginal device and were randomly divided into two groups, EB (1 mg; n = 339); or iP4 (75 mg; n = 338). On D22, P4 devices were removed, and non-pregnant (NP) heifers were identified by assessing morphological luteolysis with Doppler ultrasonography. The NP h

In the past decade, cases of Q fever have been reported in Brazil. Although the previous report of Coxiella burnetii in humans and animals, the knowledge about the occurrence of this pathogen in livestock in Brazil is scarce. This study aimed to search C. burnetii and possible coinfections in tissues of aborted bovine fetuses from Brazil. Tissue samples from seventy-six aborted bovine fetuses sent to the laboratory of molecular diagnosis of infectious diseases from 2013 to 2019 were evaluated by real-time PCR for C. burnetii. Overall, 9.2% (7/76) of the samples were positive for C. burnetii. M

All over the world, leptospirosis has been reported as one of the major causes of reproductive failure in cattle and other ruminants, determining abortions, stillbirth, weak newborns and decrease in their growth rate and milk production. Nevertheless, despite its importance, it is still a challenging disease, from what scarce information about epidemiology, prophylaxis and control is available nowadays. During the last decades of the last century, many epidemiological studies have been conducted in several countries, mainly based on serology. According to those studies, a seroepidemiological s

Infertility in dogs is a growing concern in breeding kennels. There are a number of bacteria, viruses, and husbandry practices that must be considered to determine the cause of decreased litter sizes, abortions, weak puppies, and lack of pregnancy, but brucellosis should be at the top of the differential list.
