[The morphological changes in the periodontal tissues of outbred white rats during ontogeny].

Morphologic studies, carried out by three methods, by van Gieson's, Schmorl's methods, and with the use of 0.1% solution of safranin T, have revealed heretofore unknown structures lying beyond the tooth rudiment of white noninbred rats and disappearing in the course of ontogenesis. The mechanism of the formation of autonomic circulation of the dental follicle, unrelated to the animal body, has been shown. Dental follicular tissues were found grown together with the gingival epithelium and they ruptured during tooth eruption.

[Experimental models for study of fluorosis].

In most animal species, acute fluorosis is triggered by the accidental consumption of substances with a high content of fluorine, widely used in pest control. Fluorine normally concentrates in bones and teeth, and forms nearly 0.05% of these structures in mature animals, positively contributing to increase resistance of enamel to caries and favoring mineralization after eruption, a process which increases with age. The present article submits a form of study of fluorosis, stressing due warning as to its harmful effects.

Replacement of the Piperidine Ring with Aza-Spirocycles Reduces Cardiotoxicity of the Local Anesthetic Drug Bupivacaine.

Systemic toxicity of the local anesthetic bupivacaine can lead to adverse cardiac conditions, creating a significant challenge in clinics. In this study, we examined its analogues with the central piperidine ring replaced with linear spirocyclic scaffolds. The analogues demonstrated an acceptable level of local anesthesia in mice. Notably, the spirocyclic structures exhibited significantly lower toxicity, with increases in the lethal doses of 1.3-, 2.2-, and 5.0-fold for the three tested structures, respectively. Animal studies suggested that this reduced toxicity may be attributed to lower ca

RNA structures regulate norovirus life cycle and enable rational attenuation in vivo.

Viral genomes encode regulatory RNA structures that orchestrate key steps of viral replication and gene expression. Although these structures are increasingly recognized as critical regulators of viral function, their systematic characterization in an infection context and roles in regulating viral fitness and immune recognition in vivo remain limited. Here, we systematically map and functionally interrogate structured RNA elements across the murine norovirus genome using orthogonal in-cell chemical probing, revealing conserved motifs that regulate viral function. Targeted disruption of specif

An overview of RecQ helicases and related diseases.

RecQ helicases are known as "caretakers" of the genome for their conserved helicase activities to resolve different complex DNA structures. Aberrant accumulation of unsolved DNA structures could lead to defects in DNA replication, gene transcription, and unrepaired DNA lesions. Pathogenic mutations on BLM, WRN, and RECQL4 are associated with several pathological conditions, namely Bloom syndrome (BS), Werner syndrome (WS), and Rothmund-Thomson syndrome (RTS). These syndromes are characterized by genomic instability and cancer predisposition. Additionally, some RecQ helicase diseases are linked

[Bite Wounds Should not be Irrigated by Syringe. An Anatomic Study].

UNLABELLED: In the literature about treatment of animal and human bite injuries, it is often recommended that bite wounds should be cleaned with a syringe and button cannula or plastic catheter. This is supposed to clean deeper wound sections and remove contamination and foreign bodies. Recent papers recommend cautious irrigation without high pressure. MATERIAL AND METHOD: In eight cadavers, artificial bite wounds were produced in typical locations. These wounds were irrigated by syringe and button cannula using diluted ink. The pressure of irrigation was limited to "no noticeable pressure".

Effect of Aerobic Physical Exercise in an Animal Model of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a condition caused by an amendment to the X chromosome, inherited as a recessive trait, and affects 1:3500 live births, especially males. Low-intensity exercise is known to decrease certain parameters associated with muscular degeneration in animal models of progressive muscular dystrophies. In the present study, 28-day-old male mdx and wild-type (wild) mice were used. The animals were subjected to a low-intensity physical exercise protocol for 8 weeks. It was found that this protocol was able to reduce oxidative stress in muscle tissue and in most of the C

Tinnitus: Is there a place for brain stimulation?

Tinnitus is the perception of a "phantom sound" and has a high prevalence. Although many therapies have been investigated within the last decades, there is still no effective standard therapy. Animal studies and human functional imaging studies revealed that tinnitus perception is associated with many complex changes in multiple brain structures. There is growing evidence that brain stimulation might be able to interrupt the local altered neuronal activity and hereby inhibit tinnitus perception. In this editorial review, an update is given on the most promising targets for brain stimulation. P

The pulmonary veins of the pig as an anatomical model for the development of a new treatment for atrial fibrillation.

The layout of the porcine atriopulmonary junction and immediately adjacent structures was investigated by gross anatomical and vascular corrosion casting studies to meet the need for more in-depth anatomical insights when using the pig as an animal model in the development of innovative approaches for surgical cardiac ablation in man. The veins from the right cranial and middle lung lobes drain through a common ostium in the left atrium, whereas a second ostium receives the blood returning from all other lung lobes, although limited variation to this pattern was observed. Surrounding anatomica

Mechanisms of selective vascular changes caused by dye lasers.

On the basis of models describing optical and thermal transfer in tissue, it has been shown that unfocused, pulsed 577-nm laser irradiation of human skin selectively damages microvessels with little or no direct damage to other tissue structures such as the epidermis. This is in sharp contrast to the histologically nonselective necrosis induced by continuous lasers, in which essentially all structures near the site of exposure are damaged. We report here preliminary data in an animal model regarding mechanisms by which tunable dye lasers selectively alter blood and microvasculature. Irradiatio

SpIC3D imaging for spinal in situ contrast 3D visualization.

High-definition visualization techniques are critical for understanding the neuroanatomy of the spinal cord, an essential structure for sensorimotor and autonomic functions, in both healthy and pathological conditions. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a common method for visualizing neural structures in 3D. However, techniques for spinal cord MRI have historically achieved limited visualization of rootlets and nerves, especially at lower spinal levels, due to their highly complex and compact organization. Here, we developed a spinal in situ contrast 3D imaging (SpIC3D) method that allows vi

Forebrain control of locomotor behaviors.

Activation of different areas in the forebrain evokes different types of goal directed adaptive behaviors. An important component of these different patterns of behavior is the locomotion that brings the animal to or away from a particular location. Here I review the role of projections from forebrain structures to the mesopontine tegmentum of the brainstem where neural mechanisms for initiation of locomotion and regulation of postural muscle tone are located that are activated during locomotor behavior. It is interesting is to understand how signals that converge from the forebrain structures

In vivo imaging of cartilage degeneration using microCT-arthrography.

OBJECTIVE: In vivo imaging of cartilage degeneration in small animal models is nowadays practically impossible. In the present study, we investigated the use of micro-computed tomography (microCT) in combination with a negatively charged ionic iodine dimer (ioxaglate) for in vivo assessment of cartilage degeneration in a small animal model. METHODS: Cartilage degeneration was induced in the right knee of rats by injection of mono-iodoacetate (MIA). We imaged the rat knees with ioxaglate enhanced microCT-arthrography at 4, 16 and 44 days after MIA injection. Subsequently, microCT-arthrographic

Effects of artificial shade on the performance and water intake of feedlot beef cattle in tropical environments.

Heat stress is one of the main challenges for animal production systems in tropical regions. One of the ways to mitigate the negative effects of thermal stress is to provide artificial shading structures. This work experimentally evaluates the effects of artificial shading on the productivity and water consumption of finishing beef cattle. The experiments were conducted in two locations: the Amazon Forest region (Mato Grosso State, Brazil) and the Atlantic Forest region (São Paulo State, Brazil). In both experiments, the animals were equally divided into groups with and without access to shade

Animal-based approaches to understanding neuroglia physiology in vitro and in vivo.

This chapter describes the pivotal role of animal models for unraveling the physiology of neuroglial cells in the central nervous system (CNS). The two rodent species Mus musculus (mice) and Rattus norvegicus (rats) have been indispensable in scientific research due to their remarkable resemblance to humans anatomically, physiologically, and genetically. Their ease of maintenance, short gestation times, and rapid development make them ideal candidates for studying the physiology of astrocytes, oligodendrocyte-lineage cells, and microglia. Moreover, their genetic similarity to humans facilitate

Multicentric B-cell lymphoma, phaeochromocytoma and amyloid-rich thyroid carcinoma in a common warthog (Phacochoerus africanus): a case of multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2?

Neoplastic diseases are poorly documented in Suidae species. This report describes a 15-year-old female common warthog (Phacochoerus africanus) with multicentric lymphoma, phaeochromocytoma and C-cell carcinoma. The animal had multiple episodes of weakness and epistaxis in the months before death, until it was euthanized for acute lethargy and recumbency. Post-mortem examination revealed haemoabdomen originating from enlarged lymph nodes at the mesenteric root. The warthog had generalized lymphadenopathy, consistent with B-cell lymphoma based on CD20 immunohistochemistry. The adrenal glands we

Investigation of a Worker Death While Agitating Manure in a Non-enclosed Storage.

An in-depth investigation of an unusual, non-enclosed manure storage hydrogen sulfide-induced fatality on a Holstein beef production operation is presented. The case involved several factors that likely played a role in the young farmer's death. These included zero wind movement, a reported temperature inversion in the area, relatively cool late summer outdoor temperatures on the morning of the incident, higher outdoor temperatures the week prior, and a high by-product steer ration containing ingredients that contributed significant sulfur content to the stored manure. Recommendations are offe

[Animal model of humeral joint for shoulder arthroscopy training].

UNLABELLED: Shoulder arthroscopy used since sixties of the XXth century, becomes now dominating operative technique. Surgeon's skills are most important that's why perfect training model is still needed. Ideal training model for shoulder arthroscopy should combine best possible image of human anatomical structures, good accessibility and low price. Despite of great similarity, animal shoulder joint differs from human one. More spherical shape of animal glenoid gives better support for humeral head. As a result of different shape of glenoid, labrum is significantly less developed, and can actua

Round window membrane in serous and purulent otitis media. Structural study in the rat.

The rat was used as an animal model to reveal structural alterations in the round window membrane (RWM) during serous otitis media (SOM) and purulent otitis media (POM) over a 6-week period. Comparison of POM animals and control animals showed that the RWM in the former became almost six times as thick as that in controls, whereas that of SOM animals was twice as thick. The structural changes in the RWM in POM animals were confined mainly to the epithelium facing the middle ear cavity and the subepithelial space, which was invaded by inflammatory cells and exhibited dilated vessels. The normal
