BACKGROUND: Numerous aeroallergens have been associated with the development of asthma, including Alternaria, house-dust mite, and pet dander. Tucson, Arizona, is located in the Sonoran Desert, which has the highest diversity of vegetation of any desert in the world. Given the unique pollen profile in this region, we sought to identify the most common aeroallergens associated with rhinitis and asthma diagnosis in the local adult population.
OBJECTIVE: To identify the prevalence of aeroallergen sensitivity in the Tucson adult population and to identify which aeroallergens are associated with a

Quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa Willd.) is an allotetraploid crop with extraordinary environmental adaptability. To explore its genetic diversity, evolutionary dynamics, and altitudinal differentiation, we constructed a gene-based pangenome using 11 genomes (7 highland and 4 lowland accessions), comprising 51,298 orthologous groups with 19,653 core pan-genes, suggesting a near-closed pangenome architecture within the sampled accessions. Evolutionary analysis revealed that core pan-genes experienced the strongest purifying selection, whereas private pan-genes exhibited the weakest purifying selectio

INTRODUCTION: Military personnel is often deployed in environmentally distinct areas across the globe and thereby exposed to a multitude of new plants, weeds or trees. Sensitisation to inhalant allergens occurs upon exposure in predisposed individuals. This causes frequent problems that may affect the readiness of the personnel.
METHODS: Study participants were recruited among the military personnel of the Belgian Army and invited to receive an allergy test by the skin prick automated test (SPAT) device for a panel of 22 inhalant allergens. A questionnaire was completed to retrieve informatio

Most world countries are experiencing a remarkable aging process. Meanwhile, 50 million people are affected by Alzheimer's disease (AD) and related dementia and there is an increasing trend in the incidence of these major health problems. In order to address these, the increasing evidence suggesting the protective effect of dietary interventions against cognitive decline during aging may suggest a response to this challenge. There are nutrients with a neuroprotective effect. However, Western diets are poor in healthy n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFAs), such as docosahexaenoic acid (DH

Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) primarily results from excessive nutrient consumption, with lifestyle modifications, particularly dietary interventions, constituting a principal strategy for its management. This study sought to examine the ameliorative effects of a quinoa diet (QD) on hepatic lipid metabolism in mice with MASLD. Six-week-old male C57BL/6J mice were fed with a QD for 12 weeks, and age-matched male mice were subjected to a high-fat diet (HFD) to establish obese MASLD models, followed by QD intervention. Compared with the chow diet (CD) group, QD

A ligand fishing strategy was developed to screen for pancreatic lipase (PL) inhibitory peptides from quinoa protein hydrolysate (QPH) using PL-immobilized Fe₃O₄@SiO₂ magnetic particles. An initial activity of 230 U/g, a PL loading capacity of 180 mg/g, an immobilization yield of 25 %, and retained 39.23 % of its activity after 10 reuse cycles. Three novel peptides (LNEILAHE, VETELEKR, TVSAPSPK) were identified by LC-MS/MS and exhibited moderate PL inhibitory activities with IC₅₀ values ranging from 0.48 to 0.92 mg/mL. They showed dose-dependent anti-adipogenesis effects in 3T3-L1 cells, with

Quinoa β-glucan (QBG) has shown potential benefits in treating type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM); however, comprehensive evaluations of its effects remain limited. This study investigates the impact of QBG-derived from hot water extraction (Q-) and microbial fermentation enrichment (Q+)-on serum glucose levels, lipid profiles, appetite-regulating hormones, fecal short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), and gut microbiota composition and function in streptozotocin/high-fat diet (STZ/HFD)-induced T2DM mice. The results indicate that QBG treatment significantly reduced fasting blood glucose, insulin levels

In this work, the functional activities including α-glucosidase, α-amylase, angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitory activity, and antioxidant activity of mixed grains (mung beans, cowpeas, and quinoa) fermented with Bacillus amyloliquefaciens SY07 were investigated. The volatile flavor of the mixed grains collected every 12 h during 72 h-fermentation were further detected as well. The inhibition on α-glucosidase and α-amylase reached up to 89.34 % and 50.03 % with the sample concentration of 5.17 and 9.38 mg/mL, respectively. Moreover, the ACE inhibitory activity reached to 93.66 % with

The rapid development of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) drug resistance and the formation of biofilms seriously challenge the clinical application of classic antibiotics. Extracts of the traditional herb Chenopodium ambrosioides L. were found to have strong antibiofilm activity against MRSA, but their mechanism of action remains poorly understood. This study was designed to investigate the antibacterial and antibiofilm activities against MRSA of flavonoids identified from C. ambrosioides L. in combination with classic antibiotics, including ceftazidime, erythromycin, levofl

Quinoa bran is a by-product of quinoa processing and is rich in polyphenolic bioactives. Previous studies have shown that polyphenol compounds can help alleviate metabolic diseases, but studies on quinoa bran polyphenols intervening in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) have not yet been reported. In this study, a C57BL/6J mouse NAFLD model was established using a high-fat diet (HFD) to explore the interventional effects of quinoa bran polyphenol extract (QBP) on NAFLD in mice. The results showed that QBP was effective in attenuating abnormal lipid metabolism and hepatic fat accumulatio

Cadmium (Cd) is a highly toxic, non-essential element associated with cardiovascular dysfunction through oxidative stress, endothelial impairment, and inflammatory activation. Identifying plant-based dietary strategies, including quinoa, a low-cost pseudocereal with recognized bioactive properties, may offer a sustainable approach to mitigate these effects. This study aimed to characterize a bioactive red quinoa hydrolysate (RQH) and to investigate whether RQH prevents vascular damage induced by Cd exposure. Male Wistar rats were exposed to Cd with or without RQH treatment for 14 days. Co-trea

Plants are important components in sustaining the life of humans and animals, balancing ecosystems, providing animal feed and edible food for human consumption, and serving as sources of traditional and modern medicine. However, plants can be harmful to both animals and humans when ingested, leading to poisoning regardless of the quantity consumed. This presents significant risks to livestock health and can impede economic growth. In several developing countries, including Ethiopia, traditional communities have depended on medicinal plants for treating livestock and human diseases. The inciden
