Chlorella pyrenoidosa Polysaccharide CPP-3a Promotes M1 Polarization of Macrophages via TLR4/2-MyD88-NF-κB/p38 MAPK Signaling Pathways.

The immunomodulatory polysaccharide CPP-3a, purified from Chlorella pyrenoidosa, was investigated for its effects on RAW264.7 macrophages and underlying mechanisms, revealing that CPP-3a significantly enhanced phagocytic capacity and nitric oxide production while upregulating pro-inflammatory cytokines TNF-α and IL-6 and elevating the co-stimulatory molecule CD86, collectively driving robust M1 polarization. Mechanistically, TLR4-, TLR2-specific inhibitors, and TLR4-knockout cells confirmed TLR4 as the primary receptor for CPP-3a, with TLR2 playing a secondary role in cytokine modulation. CPP-

One-step synthesis of a core-shell structured biochar using algae (Chlorella) powder and ferric sulfate for immobilizing Hg(II).

Mercury (Hg) pollution poses a significant environmental challenge. One promising method for its removal is the sorption of mercuric ions using biochar. FeS-doped biochar (FBC) exhibits effective mercury adsorption, however may release excess iron into the surrounding water. To address this issue, a novel magnetic pyrrhotite/magnetite-doped biochar with a core-shell structure was synthesized for the adsorption of 2-valent mercury (Hg(II)). The proposed synthesis process involved the use of algae powder and ferric sulfate in a one-step method. By varying the ratio of ferric sulfate and alga pow

Chlorella-enriched hydrogels protect against myocardial damage and reactive oxygen species production in anin vitroischemia/reperfusion model using cardiac spheroids.

Microalgae have emerged as promising photosynthetic microorganisms for biofabricating advanced tissue constructs, with improved oxygenation and reduced reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. However, their use in the engineering of human tissues has been limited due to their intrinsic growth requirements, which are not compatible with human cells. In this study, we first formulated alginate-gelatin (AlgGel) hydrogels with increasing densities ofChlorella vulgaris. Then, we characterised their mechanical properties and pore size. Finally, we evaluated their effects on cardiac spheroid (CS) p

Antihypertensive Effects, Molecular Docking Study, and Isothermal Titration Calorimetry Assay of Angiotensin I-Converting Enzyme Inhibitory Peptides from Chlorella vulgaris.

The aim of this work is to explore angiotensin I-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitory peptides from Chlorella vulgaris (C. vulgaris) and discover the inhibitory mechanism of the peptides. After C. vulgaris proteins were gastrointestinal digested in silico, several ACE inhibitory peptides with C-terminal tryptophan were screened. Among them, two novel noncompetitive ACE inhibitors, Thr-Thr-Trp (TTW) and Val-His-Trp (VHW), exhibited the highest inhibitory activity indicated by IC50 values 0.61 ± 0.12 and 0.91 ± 0.31 μM, respectively. Both the peptides were demonstrated stable against gastrointesti

In-vivo evaluation of silver nanoparticles-enhanced Chlorella protein nanovaccine for immunological defense in grouper (Epinephelus sp) against RNA viral infections.

Viral RNA diseases, notably Viral Nervous Necrosis (VNN), routinely produce very high losses (≈80-100% mortality) in cultured groupers (Epinephelus sp.), driving major economic impacts across Asia. Conventional vaccination has been unreliable, largely because of antigen instability and suboptimal, short-lived immunity. Nanovaccine platforms-here, Chlorella-derived proteins augmented with silver nanoparticles (AgNPs)-offer a route to better antigen delivery and immune modulation in aquatic hosts. This study evaluated the efficacy of an AgNPs- Chlorella vulgaris protein nanovaccine in VNN-challe

Ibuprofen/graphene oxide co-exposure in Chlorella vulgaris: Distinct targets and a dose- and time-dependent shift from synergy to antagonism.

As the use of pharmaceuticals and nanomaterials continues to rise, their concurrent presence in aquatic ecosystems has become increasingly likely, challenging primary producers with complex exposure conditions. Yet, the molecular mechanisms governing their joint impacts are still unclear. This study presents a multi-scale investigation of the time- and concentration-dependent interactions between ibuprofen (IBU) and graphene oxide (GO) in the green alga Chlorella vulgaris. Environmentally relevant concentrations (ERCs) and sublethal concentrations were used, with physiological screening integr

Accumulated lipids rather than the rigid cell walls impede the extraction of genetic materials for effective colony PCRs in Chlorella vulgaris.

BACKGROUND: Failure of colony PCRs in green microalga Chlorella vulgaris is typically attributed to the difficulty in disrupting its notoriously rigid cell walls for releasing the genetic materials and therefore the development of an effective colony PCR procedure in C. vulgaris presents a challenge. RESULTS: Here we identified that colony PCR results were significantly affected by the accumulated lipids rather than the rigid cell walls of C. vulgaris. The higher lipids accumulated in C. vulgaris negatively affects the effective amplification by DNA polymerase. Based on these findings, we est

Biogas production and biomolecule degradation from Chlorella vulgaris using a lagoon-digester granular sludge versus a silty sludge adapted to microalgae.

Anaerobic digestion of microalgal biomass is a promising route for biogas production, but its efficiency is constrained by algal properties and by the biomolecule degradation kinetics of the microbial consortia used as inoculum. This study provides the first evaluation of biogas production and biomolecule degradation kinetics by a spontaneously formed granular sludge from an industrial lagoon digester, using Chlorella vulgaris biomass as substrate, in comparison with a silty sludge naturally adapted to the presence of microalgae (chlorophytes). Granular sludge initiated methanogenesis without

Chlorella-embedded hydrogel wound dressing based on carboxymethyl chitosan and κ-carrageenan with oxygen production and antibacterial activity for wound healing.

Hypoxia and bacterial infection synergistically impede skin wound healing, posing significant clinical challenges. Conventional oxygen-releasing agents and antimicrobial agents are constrained by poor biocompatibility and the emergence of drug resistance. Consequently, the development of biocompatible, non-resistance-inducing oxygen-releasing antimicrobial wound dressings is of paramount importance. This study presents a κ-carrageenan (κ-Cr)/carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS) hydrogel wound dressing loaded with Chlorella and berberine (BBR). Chlorella facilitates stable and sustained oxygen release

Metallomics and NMR-based metabolomics of Chlorella sp. reveal the synergistic role of copper and cadmium in multi-metal toxicity and oxidative stress.

Industrial wastewaters often contain high levels of metal mixtures, in which metal mixtures may have synergistic or antagonistic effects on aquatic organisms. A combination of metallomics and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR)-based metabolomics was employed to understand the consequences of multi-metal systems (Cu, Cd, Pb) on freshwater microalgae. Morphological characterization, cell viability and chlorophyll a determination of metal-spiked Chlorella sp. suggested synergistic effects of Cu and Cd on growth inhibition and toxicity. While Pb has no apparent effect on Chlorella sp. m
