Emergency department (ED) nurses care for patients during critical times: violence, trauma, death, etc. Continuous exposure increases risk for secondary traumatic stress (STS): negative reaction experienced by someone with an indirect exposure to trauma. This impairs their ability to cope, increases levels of anxiety/depression, and increases attrition. Using a phenomenological design, the researcher interviewed 23 bedside ED nurses in Missouri and/or Illinois, USA. Five themes emerged: patient care, relationships at work, life outside the hospital, impacting on a personal level, and residual

BACKGROUND: Empathy fatigue represents a significant concern among healthcare professionals working in critical care settings, including intensive care units, emergency departments and neonatal units. It is an established fact that constant exposure to emotionally intense situations may lead to a state of emotional exhaustion, a reduction in job satisfaction and a compromise in the quality of patient care. Despite the prevalence of this phenomenon, there remains a paucity of profession-specific tools with which to assess empathy fatigue in these high-stress environments.
AIM: The objective of

BACKGROUND: Medical oncologists are required to make rapid and critical decisions between life and death throughout their careers. This high-pressure environment necessitates the investigation of burnout and secondary traumatic stress (STS) among medical oncologists. The aim of this study was to examine the effects of empathy components and dispositional mindfulness on burnout and STS in medical oncologists. METHOD: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 250 medical oncologists who were actively employed. Participants completed a sociodemographic form, the Professional Quality of Life Scal

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has challenged everyone's adaptive resources. However, a limited number of studies have examined its effects on mental health workers, a population at increased risk for vicarious traumatization.
METHODS: A mediation model was tested using longitudinal self-report data (N=1597). The association among occupation, severity of trauma-related and stressor-related (TSR) symptoms during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, and self-efficacy was explored.
RESULTS: Mental health workers reported greater self-efficacy than other survey participants (health care w

AIM: This study aimed to investigate whether psychological distress mediates the relationship between secondary traumatic stress (STS) and post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) among clinical nurses, and whether perceived emotional support moderates this mediating effect.
DESIGN: A cross-sectional study.
METHODS: A total of 205 clinical nurses who had direct patient contact and trauma-related experience were included. Data were collected using validated instruments: the Secondary Traumatic Stress Scale (STSS), Depression Anxiety Stress Scale-12 (DASS-12), Impact of Event Scale-Revised (IES-R

This study explored the experiences of individuals who self-identify as providing support to a friend, family member, or significant other with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). We analyzed and coded a total of 345 posts from an online support forum, with reference to 13 categories (finances, life interference, venting/emotional expression, maltreatment, sexual behavior, distress, prevented expression, physical health, communication, no personal space, isolation, and compassion fatigue). Categories for coding were established a priori and based on previous literature about caregiving and s

BACKGROUND: Epidermolysis bullosa (EB) is an inherited genodermatosis that results in mucocutaneous fragility. There is a lack of data on the impact of this disease on parents. There are no studies on the impact on siblings and few on healthcare professionals in dealing with this devastating disease.
METHODS: A scoping review was performed using the Arksey and O'Malley and PRISMA-ScR framework. Twenty-seven articles were reviewed, and a data-charting sheet was formulated.
RESULTS: Parents make great sacrifices and are resilient in caring for their sick children but are at risk of depression.

BACKGROUND: Healthcare workers employed in hospital settings face significant occupational stressors that place them at elevated risk for a range of mental health outcomes, including burnout, depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, secondary traumatic stress, compassion fatigue, and moral injury. These challenges carry serious consequences for healthcare worker well-being, patient safety, care quality, and workforce retention. Despite growing recognition of this crisis and recent federal legislation allowing funding to address healthcare worker mental health, no comprehensive synt

INTRODUCTION: Existing data on how history of trauma and adversity affects healthcare professionals is limited. This study sought to describe the prevalence of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and Positive Childhood Experiences (PCEs) and their association with present-day workplace and wellbeing outcomes among a sample of healthcare teammates overall, as well as specifically among nurses. The paper also describes local trauma-informed care initiatives that supported study feasibility.
METHODS: Cross-sectional online survey data were collected in conjunction with promoting hospital-wide t

Congestive heart failure (CHF) has a high rate of morbidity and mortality. It is often accompanied by other medical and psychosocial comorbidities that complicate treatment and adherence. We conducted a proof of concept pilot project to determine the feasibility of providing integrative group medical visits plus mindfulness training for patients recently discharged with CHF. Patients were eligible if they had been discharged from an inpatient stay for CHF within the 12 months prior to the new program. AIMS: Secondary trauma is recognised as one of the negative effects for professionals working with people that have experienced trauma. Research has demonstrated secondary trauma in foster carers but little research has explored trauma symptoms within adoptive parents, facing the emotional impact of parenting a child with adverse early experiences. This study aimed to document the rates of primary and secondary trauma symptoms in adoptive parents. It further explores the association between the extent of current behavioural and emotional challenges and the extent of the child's pre-adoption ad
