Differential roles of nonsynaptic and synaptic plasticity in operant reward learning-induced compulsive behavior.

BACKGROUND: Rewarding stimuli in associative learning can transform the irregularly and infrequently generated motor patterns underlying motivated behaviors into output for accelerated and stereotyped repetitive action. This transition to compulsive behavioral expression is associated with modified synaptic and membrane properties of central neurons, but establishing the causal relationships between cellular plasticity and motor adaptation has remained a challenge. RESULTS: We found previously that changes in the intrinsic excitability and electrical synapses of identified neurons in Aplysia'

The 5-HT7 receptor influences stereotypic behavior in a model of obsessive-compulsive disorder.

The 5-HT7 receptor has been suggested as a new putative target for the treatment of neuropsychiatric disorders, especially depression. This hypothesis is based on the finding that antidepressant drugs have relatively high affinity for the 5-HT7 receptor, and that inactivation or blockade of the receptor leads to an antidepressant-like profile in behavioral models and sleep parameters. Obsessive-compulsive disorder is also believed to involve the serotonergic system and is treated using antidepressants, thus it is of interest to study the possible role of the 5-HT7 receptor in this disorder. CHD8 -Related Neurodevelopmental Disorder Manifesting Adult-Onset Compulsive Behaviors.

A patient of intellectual developmental disorder with autism and macrocephaly (IDDAM) caused by a novel CHD8 mutation developed adult-onset compulsive behaviors in addition to the core phenotype in early life. This case expands the clinical and genotypic spectrums of IDDAM which may inspire future studies on genotype-phenotype correlation and the disease course.

Pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments for impulsive-compulsive behaviors in Parkinson's disease.

RATIONALE: Impulsive-compulsive behaviors (ICBs) in Parkinson's disease are associated with psychiatric comorbidities, reduced quality of life, caregiver burden and serious psychosocial consequences. These behaviors greatly impact patients and their families, and pose a challenge for clinicians. OBJECTIVES: To assess and compare the effects of pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments for ICBs in people with Parkinson's disease, and to assess whether the effects differ according to ICB subtype. SEARCH METHODS: We searched the Cochrane Movement Disorders Group Specialized Register, t

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder and Schizophrenia: Conceptualization, Assessment and Cognitive Behavioral Treatment.

There is little doubt that schizophrenia (SZ) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) are among the most severe disorders to impact humanity. They are both common, significantly disabling and have the tendency to strike during critical developmental periods in a young person's life. Schizophrenia affects approximately 1% of the global population and OCD has a lifetime prevalence of between 2% and 3% in the general population. The comorbidities in both SZ and OCD are common and frequently diagnosed, and research has generally found that comorbidities are associated with conditions that are more

A Review of Motivational Interviewing in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.

Although cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a highly effective treatment for individuals with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), a portion people with OCD do not benefit fully from CBT due to ambivalence about participating in treatment, nonadherence to exposure exercises, and dropout. This paper reviews the promising evidence for motivational interviewing (MI) as a therapeutic approach that is well suited to address these issues and potentially improve treatment outcomes. It will also provide a discussion of MI processes that may enhance CBT for OCD which can foster a collaborative relat

New pharmacological and neuromodulation approaches for impulsive-compulsive behaviors in Parkinson's disease.

INTRODUCTION: A significant proportion of patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) display a set of impulsive-compulsive behaviors at some point during the course of illness. These behaviors range from the so-called behavioral addictions to dopamine dysregulation syndrome, punding and hoarding disorders. These behaviors have been consistently linked to the use of dopaminergic medications used to treat PD motor symptoms (dopamine agonists, levodopa, and other agents) and less consistently to neuromodulation techniques such as deep brain stimulation (DBS). Since there are still no approved treatme

Dynamics of impulsive-compulsive behaviors in early Parkinson's disease: a prospective study.

INTRODUCTION: Impulsive compulsive behaviors (ICBs) in Parkinson's disease (PD) are debilitating disorders of repetitive, excessive, and compulsive nature affecting up to one third of PD patients. Objectives are to address clinical, psychiatric, and cognitive characteristics of ICBs and to define risk factors in PD patients in the initial motor stage, followed up for 5 years. METHODS: We analyzed 106 consecutive PD outpatients at Hoehn and Yahr disease stage 1 and 125 healthy controls. The participants were assessed for the presence of any ICB using the current clinical criteria and underwent

Scales to assess impulsive and compulsive behaviors in Parkinson's disease: Critique and recommendations.

Impulse control disorders (ICDs) and related impulsive and compulsive behaviors (together called ICBs) have been increasingly recognized in the context of Parkinson's disease (PD) and treatment. The International Parkinson's and Movement Disorder Society commissioned a task force to assess available clinical screening instruments and rating scales, including their clinimetric properties, make recommendations regarding their utility, and suggest future directions in scale development and validation. The literature was systematically searched for scales measuring a range of reported ICBs in PD.

Impulsive-compulsive spectrum behaviors in pathologically confirmed progressive supranuclear palsy.

There is growing awareness of impulsive-compulsive spectrum behaviors (ICBs) in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) treated with dopamine replacement therapy (DRT). These include pathological gambling, hypersexuality, compulsive shopping, binge eating, punding and compulsive use of DRT, or dopamine dysregulation syndrome. In PD, difficulties exist in separating the effects of DRT from the underlying disease process and aberrant dopaminergic systems in determining the aetiology of ICBs. Recent reports of ICBs associated with dopamine agonist use for conditions other than PD may suggest a sig

Symptom presentation and outcome of cognitive-behavioral therapy for obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Previous researchers have classified obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) patients by the themes of their obsessions and compulsions (e.g., washing, checking); however, mental compulsions have not been adequately assessed in these studies. The authors conducted 2 studies using a large sample of OCD patients (N=132). In the 1st study, they categorized patients on the basis of symptom presentation, giving adequate consideration to mental compulsions. Five patient clusters were identified: harming, contamination, hoarding, unacceptable thoughts, and symmetry. Mental compulsions were most prevalent

A controlled study of Tourette syndrome. IV. Obsessions, compulsions, and schizoid behaviors.

To determine the frequency of obsessive, compulsive, and schizoid behaviors in Tourette syndrome (TS), we prospectively questioned 246 patients with TS, 17 with attention-deficit disorder (ADD), 15 with ADD due to a TS gene, and 47 random controls. The comparative frequency of obsessive, compulsive, and repetitive behaviors--such as obsessive unpleasant thoughts, obsessive silly thoughts, echolalia, palilalia, touching things excessively, touching things a specific number of times, touching others excessively, sexual touching, biting or hurting oneself, head banging, rocking, mimicking others,

Morbid jealousy featuring as obsessive-compulsive neurosis: treatment by behavioral psychotherapy.

Morbid jealousy can occasionally be indistinguishable from obsessive-compulsive neurosis and then be partially amenable to broad-spectrum behavioural treatment. This can involve the partner and includes (a) methods to reduce jealousy and (b) other methods where appropriate, such as social skills training, and sex and marital therapy. This pilot study describes such treatment of four jealous out-patients. Rituals improved in three patients but ruminations in only one. Of three patients who were depressed at the start of treatment, two improved in rituals and in mood. The patient who failed was

Vortioxetine-Lurasidone Augmentation for Compulsive Scratching Behavior in Prader-Willi Syndrome: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is a rare genetic disorder frequently associated with repetitive and self-injurious behaviors such as skin picking. Effective pharmacological treatments for compulsive scratching behavior in PWS remain limited. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 19-year-old woman with PWS presenting with severe, persistent scratching behavior resulting in repeated excoriations. Escitalopram produced partial improvement but was discontinued because of sedation. Treatment was switched to vortioxetine, which reduced the frequency of scratching but did not achieve r

From disorder to dimensionality: Reconceptualizing compulsive sexual behavior-Commentary on Grubbs and Boness (2025).

Comments on the article by J. B. Grubbs and C. L. Boness (see record 2025-66167-001). Compulsive sexual behavior (CSB) is a complex and often misunderstood condition, characterized by persistent, distressing patterns of out-of-control sexual behavior. Despite increasing prevalence, CSB remains diagnostically ambiguous and is subject to ongoing debate about how it should be conceptualized. While various existing frameworks capture core aspects of the condition, none seems to fully account for its diverse features. This commentary argues that rigid categorical diagnostic models may be limiting p

Hypo- or hyperfunction? Differential relationships between compulsive sexual behavior disorder facets and sexual health.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies linking compulsive sexual behavior disorder (CSBD) and sexual health have shown mixed results, which could be due to the fact that different CSBD facets may have differential relationships with sexual functioning. AIM: As CSBD is a multidimensional disorder, we wanted to investigate whether distinct CSBD domains are differentially related to sexual health. METHODS: Two online studies were conducted-the first on a convenience sample (812 Polish participants; mean [SD] age, 22.07 [5.91] years) and a replication study on a representative sample of Polish adults (n =

Another failure of the latent disease model? The case of compulsive sexual behavior disorder •

Recent debates have evolved regarding the classification/conceptualization of compulsive sexual behavior disorder (CSBD). Conclusions regarding an agreed upon CSBD model are hindered by reliance on the latent disease model. Competing biological-based frameworks are moving forward to replace latent disease classification more broadly but have been met with limited success. We suggest that CSBD researchers move towards developing dimensional, transtheoretical, process-based models. We further suggest additional research, particularly mixed methods and longitudinal studies. Finally, we request th

Transdiagnostic phenotypes of compulsive behavior and associations with psychological, cognitive, and neurobiological affective processing.

Compulsivity is a poorly understood transdiagnostic construct thought to underlie multiple disorders, including obsessive-compulsive disorder, addictions, and binge eating. Our current understanding of the causes of compulsive behavior remains primarily based on investigations into specific diagnostic categories or findings relying on one or two laboratory measures to explain complex phenotypic variance. This proof-of-concept study drew on a heterogeneous sample of community-based individuals (N = 45; 18-45 years; 25 female) exhibiting compulsive behavioral patterns in alcohol use, eating, cle
