Identification and quantification of myocardial scar is important for diagnosis and prognosis of cardiovascular diseases. However, reliable scar segmentation from Late Gadolinium Enhancement Cardiac Magnetic Resonance (LGE-CMR) images remains a challenge due to variations in contrast enhancement across patients, suboptimal imaging conditions such as post-contrast washout, and inconsistencies in ground-truth annotations on diffuse scars caused by inter-observer variability. In this work, we propose a curriculum learning-based framework designed to improve segmentation performance under these ch

INTRODUCTION: Virtual reality has been shown to be a strong introduction to the robot. However, we hypothesized that a biotissue curriculum including common surgical anastomoses can further enhance robotic technical skills in surgical residents.
METHODS: Post-graduate-year three (PGY-3) general surgery residents completed a two-week robotic simulation rotation. The inanimate exercises used biotissue to simulate common robotic anastomoses, including the running hepaticojejunostomy (RHJ), gastrojejunostomy (GJ), interrupted hepaticojejunostomy (IHJ), and pancreaticojejunostomy (PJ). Drills were

Microkinetic models (MKMs) are widely used within the computational heterogeneous catalysis community to investigate complex reaction mechanisms, to rationalize experimental trends, and to accelerate the rational design of novel catalysts. However, constructing these models requires computationally expensive and manually tedious density functional theory (DFT) calculations for identifying transition states for each elementary reaction within the MKM. To address these challenges, we demonstrate a novel protocol that uses the open-source kinetics workflow tool Pynta to automate the iterative tra

BACKGROUND: Sepsis is a global healthcare challenge and a leading cause of morbidity and mortality. In the USA, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services has integrated the Severe Sepsis and Septic Shock Management Bundle (SEP-1) into their Core Quality Measures, which has been linked to lower mortality rates. However, SEP-1's multiple bundle elements present compliance challenges without comprehensive education and a collaborative approach involving nurses and providers (attending physicians, resident physicians, nurse practitioners and physician assistants).
METHODS: We developed a virtu

An estimated 8% to 16% of the world's population has chronic kidney disease, defined by low glomerular filtration rate or albuminuria. Progression of chronic kidney disease is associated with adverse outcomes, including incident kidney failure with replacement therapy, accelerated cardiovascular disease, disability, and mortality. Therefore, slowing kidney function decline is paramount in the management of a patient with chronic kidney disease. Ascertaining the cause of kidney disease is an important first step and may compel specific therapies. Effective approaches that apply to the vast majo

INTRODUCTION: The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends vitamin K prophylaxis at birth for all newborns to prevent vitamin K deficiency bleeding (VKDB). Despite a lack of evidence for serious harms, barriers to prophylaxis, including parental refusal, are rising, as are cases of VKDB.
METHODS: This simulation involved an infant presenting to the emergency department who decompensated due to a cerebral hemorrhage caused by VKDB and was treated by pediatric and emergency providers. The case was incorporated into the fellow and division monthly curricula, and participants completed postsimul

Learning complex tasks from scratch is challenging and often impossible for humans as well as for artificial agents. Instead, a curriculum can be used, which decomposes a complex task - the target task - into a sequence of source tasks. Each source task is a simplified version of the next source task with increasing complexity. Learning then occurs gradually by training on each source task while using knowledge from the curriculum's prior source tasks. In this study, we present a new algorithm that combines curriculum learning with Hindsight Experience Replay (HER), to learn sequential object

OBJECTIVES: Community health workers (CHWs) are a promising approach to oral health promotion in high-risk populations. This article describes the process of creating a pediatric oral health CHW training curriculum.
DESIGN: Existing curricula were identified through outreach efforts to experts in the oral health and CHW fields, as well as PubMed and Google searches. After coding basic information, curricula were mapped to define oral health domains. Then group discussion was employed to determine final curriculum contents.
SETTING: United States.
INCLUSION CRITERIA: Curricula were included

BACKGROUND: Lack of a health advocacy curriculum and clarity are obstacles for effectively teaching neurology health advocacy (NHA) to neurology residents. Our purpose is to assess the need and develop content for a NHA curriculum and to describe its underlying components.
METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study with two steps. In step one, neurologists and neurology residents at University of Calgary were surveyed about their perception of teaching NHA and asked to rank 56 neurological diseases on a Likert scale based on how well they lend themselves to teaching health advocacy. In step two

BACKGROUND: The establishment of a credible, defensible and acceptable “formal competency based ophthalmology training curriculum for undergraduate medical and dental students” is fundamental to program recognition, monitoring and evaluation. The University of Zimbabwe College of Health Sciences (UZ-CHS) has never had a formal ophthalmology training curriculum for medical graduates since its inception. This has cast doubts on the quality of medical graduates produced with regards to delivery of basic primary eye care in the community.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this project was to develop a formal

OBJECTIVES: To explore how students navigate the emotional, relational, and structural dimensions of learning the nursing profession within a concept-based curriculum (CBC).
METHODS: Guided by Husserlian phenomenology and Wenger's Social Theory of Learning, van Manen's hermeneutic approach informed conversational interviews with eight final-year nursing students.
FINDINGS: Becoming a nurse emerged as a process fueled by reciprocity of care and marked by personal transformation, reflected in evolving experiences of personhood, understanding, and growth. Five experiential structures shaped the

CONTEXT: Identifying the limits of medical interventions to sustain life, navigating advance care plans (ACP), and managing symptoms at end-of-life are critically important skills to pediatric residents who care for children with serious illnesses in high-acuity clinical settings. However, pediatric residents report inadequate training in primary palliative care skills. Simulation-based Mock Code training is an education modality used to practice high-stakes skills in a controlled environment. Leveraging the structure of Mock Code simulations, our team generated a novel Mock No Code curriculum

INTRODUCTION: Physician-assisted dying (PAD) is legal in an increasing number of jurisdictions across the United States. Despite this, formal hospice and palliative medicine (HPM) fellowship curricula on PAD are lacking. To address this, a neutral (nonadvocacy) PAD pilot curriculum was developed and implemented in one large HPM fellowship program.
METHODS: A five-lecture curriculum was developed by an interdisciplinary group using Kern's six-step method. Comfort, knowledge, and satisfaction were assessed.
RESULTS: 17 fellows were eligible to complete curriculum assessments with a 76% respons

INTRODUCTION: Emergency physicians frequently care for patients with serious or terminal illnesses, yet they often lack formal palliative care training. Our primary objective was to develop a structured, multimodal palliative care curriculum for emergency medicine (EM) residents and evaluate whether this curriculum improved residents' knowledge, comfort level, and perceived application of skills to care for patients with chronic or terminal illness in the emergency department (ED). Our secondary objective was to determine whether EM residents found palliative care education important and to id

BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a public health threat. Antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) provides a promising solution to mitigate AMR risk. Despite the recognition of AMS interventions, educational curricula tailored to nurses are scarce. This study aimed to develop an evidence-based nursing AMS curriculum.
METHODS: A descriptive design study used combined approach to guide the development of an AMS curriculum for nurses working at the Ministry of National Guard Health Affairs using Kern's six-step framework and shared governance model. We have provided the detailed steps and co
