A retrospective cohort study comparing two treatments for active venous leg ulcers.

Endovenous laser ablation (EVLA) and ultrasound-guided foam sclerotherapy (UGFS) have largely replaced traditional surgery for treatment of varicose veins (VVs) with active venous leg ulcers (VLUs), and multiple combined modes have emerged. A retrospective cohort study was performed to compare the effect of traditional surgery (high ligation and stripping followed with compression [compression plus HL-S]) to high ligation-endovenous laser ablation-foam sclerotherapy followed with compression (compression plus HL-EVLA-FS) on the treatment of active VLUs.Data of active VLUs treated in our center

Axon and ganglion cell injury in rabbits after percutaneous trigeminal balloon compression.

New Zealand white rabbits were used to determine whether the changes in the Vth cranial nerve sensory root after compression were associated with the loss of a specific subclass of Vth cranial nerve ganglion cells, the disappearance of a distinct subset of primary afferent terminals in Vth cranial nerve nucleus caudalis, and/or injury to a specific axonal fiber type. There was no significant difference in the size of surviving ganglion cells after Vth cranial nerve compression, as measured 2 to 3 months after injury (P > 0.5, n = 4). Densitometric analysis of the nerves of rabbits that survive

Impact on Health-Related quality of life after wearing compression garment or not for six months in women with mild breast cancer-related arm lymphedema. A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Women with mild breast cancer-related arm lymphedema (BCRAL) mostly receive treatment with compression garments and instructions in self-care to prevent the progression of lymphedema. However, wearing a compression garment may be experienced as negative and may affect health-related quality of life (HRQOL) more than the lymphedema itself. The aim of this study was to investigate if there is a difference in lymphedema-specific HRQOL, between women with mild BCRAL wearing compression garments or not for 6 months. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Participants with mild BCRAL (Lymphedema relativ

Efficacy of night-time compression for breast cancer related lymphedema (LYNC): protocol for a multi-centre, randomized controlled efficacy trial.

BACKGROUND: Lymphedema is a prevalent long-term effect of breast cancer treatment that is associated with reduced quality of life. More recent observational data suggest that the addition of night-time compression to day-time use of a compression garment results in better long-term control of arm lymphedema. The primary objectives of the randomized controlled phase of the trial are to determine the efficacy of night-time compression on arm lymphedema volume maintenance and quality of life in breast cancer survivors who have completed intensive reduction treatment for their lymphedema. Thoracic outlet syndrome: evaluation of the subclavian vessels by color duplex sonography.

Changes in flow in the subclavian artery and vein resulting from the use of a hyperabduction maneuver during Doppler sonography in 20 volunteers were compared with retrospective findings in 16 patients clinically suspected of having thoracic outlet syndrome. Significant compression of the subclavian artery showed in the Doppler waveform as at least a doubling of peak systolic velocity or complete cessation of flow with hyperabduction; significant compression of the subclavian vein was diagnosed by complete cessation of blood flow or loss of atrial and respiratory dynamics in the waveform of th

Impact of growth on spinal biomechanics and tether force in VBT: a simulation study.

PURPOSE: Vertebral Body Tethering (VBT) allows correction of scoliosis while preserving the spinal mobility. Despite an increasing availability of data on clinical experience and surgical techniques, there is still a lack of knowledge on the underlying biomechanics, specifically when considered in combination with growth. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to develop a growing flexible spine model to investigate spinal biomechanics after VBT surgery. METHODS: A multi-body simulation approach was chosen. A growing, flexible thoracolumbar VBT spine model was developed to analyze the spinal

The monotonic and fatigue properties of osteoporotic thoracic vertebral bodies.

STUDY DESIGN: Measurement of the monotonic and fatigue properties of osteoporotic thoracic vertebral bodies. OBJECTIVES: To determine the loading values at which osteoporotic vertebral bodies are susceptible to failure. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Vertebral compression fractures are the most common osteoporotic fracture. Eighty-three percent of vertebral compression fractures are caused by moderate or less trauma, and there is not a specific traumatic event in 59% of these cases. Fatigue loading can lead to premature failure, although the relationship between loading and cycles to failure is

Compressive neuropathy of spinal nerve roots. A mechanical or biological problem?

Pathophysiologically, nerve root pain production is a complex issue. For many years, mechanical compression has been regarded as the sole cause for such pain. There are indications, however, that other factors, such as intraneural inflammation, may be of importance in this context. In this article, four cases are presented in which nerve root related pain gradually resolved without any proven change in the mechanical deformation of the involved nerve root. The data presented here suggest that mechanical compression, per se, may not always be the sole cause of radicular pain and dysfunction. Th

The modified Lapidus fusion: a systematic review of biomechanical studies.

PURPOSE: The biomechanical characteristics of different techniques to perform the modified Lapidus procedure are controversial, discussing the issue of stability, rigidity, and compression forces from a biomechanical point of view. The aim of this systematic review was to investigate the available options to identify whether there is a procedure providing superior biomechanical results. METHODS: A comprehensive literature search was performed by screening PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane databases until September 2021. There was a wide heterogeneity of the available data in the different studies.

Three-dimensional mechanical environment of orthodontic tooth movement and root resorption.

INTRODUCTION: The tension-compression theory of bone mechanotransduction is ubiquitous in orthodontics. However, partly due to deficiencies in the characterization of the mechanical environment, there is no consensus on the mechanisms that link stimuli to root resorption and bone response. In this study, we analyzed the predominant directions of tension and compression in the alveolar structures. METHODS: An idealized tooth model was constructed with computer-aided design for finite element stress analysis. The principal stress magnitudes and directions were calculated in tipping and translat

Experimental nerve root compression. A model of acute, graded compression of the porcine cauda equina and an analysis of neural and vascular anatomy.

Nerve root compression has been suggested as one important pathogenetic factor in low-back pain syndromes and sciatica. The underlying pathophysiologic mechanisms are, however, incompletely known, partly because of the lack of experimental data on this topic. In the present study, a model for experimental compression of the porcine sacrococcygeal cauda equina is presented. The model consists of surgical exposure of the cauda equina and compression of the cauda equina toward the ventral aspect of the spinal canal by an inflatable balloon fixed to the spine. This compression system was shown to

Vascular Compression of the Anterior Optic Pathway: A Rare Occurrence?

BACKGROUND: Vascular compression of the anterior optic pathway has been documented as an infrequent cause of visual impairments. Here we characterize such vascular compression using magnetic resonance imaging. METHODS: A total of 183 patients without pathologies affecting the optic pathways underwent T2-weighted or constructive interference steady-state sequence magnetic resonance imaging. Imaging data from coronal sections were analyzed. RESULTS: A vascular compression of the anterior optic pathway was identified in 20 patients (11%). They comprised 13 men and 7 women with a mean age of 60.
