Anger regulation is a challenge for children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). We investigated if attention-based cognitive behavioral treatment, based on mindfulness cognitive therapy (MBCT) and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), reduces aggressive behavior and improves anger coping in school-aged autistic children (n = 51). Children were randomized to an active-control or a treatment condition. The treatment included nine weekly sessions attention-based individual therapy. Parents in both conditions received three weekly psychoeducation group sessions to heighten awareness of expressed

The aim of this review is to evaluate the state of the art of studies investigating failures in cognitive behavior therapy (CBT). The last couple of years relatively few studies have specifically focused on failures in CBT. Generally, clinicians underestimate the number of therapies that fail and therapists are no better than chance at predicting effectiveness classification. In patients treated in outpatient clinics, effects of therapy were lower than effects of therapy in disorder-specific CBT efficacy randomized controlled trials. In eating disorders, results of CBT are moderate with high r

Psychotherapy, the standard treatment for borderline personality disorder, is often difficult to access, and its application in the field is hampered by neurocognitive and psychosocial impairments. This lack of care contributes to the psychosocial stagnation of vulnerable individuals, which is costly for society, particularly in terms of repeated visits to emergency rooms and prolonged hospitalizations. This context also leads to professional burnout and harmful stigmatization. Follow-up care aims to limit these episodes by anticipating emergency situations and gradually reintegrating patients

PURPOSE: Neurodivergent teens experience elevated emotion dysregulation yet are excluded from treatment trials designed to address these challenges. Guided by implementation science, social model of disability and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)'s biosocial model, this study explores the fit of DBT for neurodivergent youth, focusing on teens with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD).
METHODS: A needs assessment was conducted with teens with FASD, their caregivers, and DBT clinicians. The survey assessed fit of DBT, barriers/facilitators and adaptation priorities. Data analysis employed

Treatment assignment for patients with personality disorders (PDs) involves a complex process consisting of diagnostic assessment and deciding on the most appropriate psychotherapeutic treatment. This article describes the development of a checklist for systematic analysis of life stories to support reflective and transparent assignment of patients to either dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) or schema-focused therapy (SFT). In a first study, an email survey, focus group, and member check were conducted among eight clinical experts to identify relevant dimensions in life stories in patients

BACKGROUND: The current study investigates determinants of treatment evaluation by adolescent outpatients with anorexia nervosa (AN) and the accordance with their parents' and psychotherapists' evaluation.
SAMPLING AND METHODS: The sample included 50 female adolescent outpatients (mean age: 16.9 ± 1.8) with AN (DSM-IV). They were randomly assigned to either cognitive-behavior therapy (CBT) or dialectical-behavior therapy (DBT). Before (T1) and after treatment (T2) diagnostic interviews as well as self-report questionnaires were administered measuring eating disorder-specific and general psych

Opioid use disorder (OUD) is characterized by a lack of control in opioid use, resulting in psychological distress and deficits in interpersonal and social functioning. OUD is often associated with psychiatric comorbidities that increase the severity of the disorder. The consequences of OUD are dramatic in terms of increased morbi-mortality. Specific medications and psychotherapies are essential tools not only in the treatment of OUD but also in the prevention of suicide and overdoses. In our review, we assess the different types of psychotherapies (counseling, motivational interviewing, conti

This critical analysis of the study by Narine et al. (2026) investigates the effectiveness of a non-culturally adapted partial hospital program (PHP) using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) across ethnoracial groups. The study found that Asian participants reported better relationship functioning post-treatment, although the effect size was small. Black participants showed greater perceived improvements in symptoms, including anxiety and depression, potentially due to the PHP's intensive approach. The study also revealed that Black participants reported

The following article reviews literature pertaining to the association between child maltreatment and self-injury and the ways it varies according to maltreatment type. Research supporting various mediators of the relations between different maltreatment types and self-injury is summarized. Informing mediator models, dominant theories of functionality, particularly affect regulation theories, are summarized and granted empirical support. Following from explanations of its functionality, three developmental pathways (regulatory, representational/interpersonal, and reactive/neurobiological) lead

Although the clinical symptoms of borderline personality disorder (BPD) tend to remit over time, a substantial proportion continues to present "long-lasting symptoms" (LLS). This term refers to individuals who present some degree of clinical improvement, but low mood, feelings of emptiness, and poor psychosocial adjustment typically persist. The aim of this study was to compare the sociodemographic, clinical, and therapeutic variables in individuals with BPD with and without LLS. A total of 620 participants with BPD were included and subdivided into two groups: non-LLS group (n = 549, mean age

Childhood sexual abuse (CSA) is a pervasive and traumatic experience that can lead to long-lasting and profound psychological costs, especially post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among young adolescents. This single case study explores the application of Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) as ground-breaking therapeutic approach for the treatment of child sexual abuse related PTSD in this vulnerable population. DBT found to be effective in treating CSA related PTSD, according to a growing body of research. This case study presents the course of treatment of 13 years old girl with CSA-relate

INTRODUCTION: Dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT) is a well-known intervention for treating borderline personality disorder, and has been increasingly adapted for other disorders. Standard DBT consists of four treatment modes, delivered over a year. Adaptations to DBT include changes to modes of delivery, treatment length, and skills modules taught to clients, or incorporating interventions from other evidence-based therapies. There is a need to synthesise existing evidence on DBT so that stakeholders-clinicians, researchers and policymakers-can understand how it has been provided for various

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) has demonstrated effectiveness in reducing harmful behaviours associated with emotion dysregulation, including non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) and binge eating. It has been hypothesized that the effects of DBT on NSSI and binge eating are the result of improvements in emotion regulation (ER); however, the extent to which changes in ER account for reductions in these behaviours is unclear. The present study leverages two unique clinical samples to examine the degree to which changes in ER influence changes in the frequency of NSSI and binge eating over the co

Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is a prevalent and complex behavior, particularly among adolescents. This review explores the definition, epidemiology, and clinical significance of NSSI, emphasizing its role as a risk factor for suicidal behavior and its association with emotional dysregulation. Empirical and theoretical transdiagnostic approaches of different origins have advanced our understanding of NSSI, highlighting the importance of underlying psychological processes such as impulsivity, negative affect, and maladaptive coping strategies, yet NSSI in specific clinical presentations (e.g.

Eating disorders are serious illnesses associated with significant medical and psychological sequelae and, in the case of anorexia nervosa, significant mortality. Established psychotherapies such as cognitive-behavioral therapy and interpersonal therapy are effective for many patients with eating disorders. However, these treatments fail to yield full long-term remission in a substantial number of patients. There is a need for novel psychotherapeutic approaches for patients with eating disorders. The authors review three promising new treatment approaches in the field of eating disorders. Moti

INTRODUCTION: Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI), defined as the deliberate infliction of harm to oneself without suicidal intent, poses a significant and growing mental health concern worldwide, particularly among adolescents and young adults. This behavior is associated with considerable emotional, social, and economic burdens, and is closely linked to heightened risks of future psychological challenges, including suicidal behavior. Digital interventions based on Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) and Ecological Momentary Intervention (EMI) offer promising solutions by overcoming access barr

BACKGROUND: The only efficacious psychosocial intervention for decreasing suicide attempts among adolescents with bipolar disorder (BP) is an adaptation of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). Yet myriad factors, including clinician training, limit DBT uptake. To enhance dissemination, we systematically operationalized, implemented and studied procedures for training and supervising community clinicians to adherently deliver DBT for adolescents with BP.
METHODS: This study was conducted at a University-affiliated clinic serving youth with BP. Guided by the Enhanced-Replicating Effective Progra

BACKGROUND: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is frequent (prevalence in Germany between 0.7% and 4.5%) [11] and is associated with a high level of psychological stress and frequent emergency inpatient admissions. The provision of disorder-specific outpatient psychotherapy is still insufficient also in Germany.
OBJECTIVE: This article provides an overview of the available data on the effectiveness of inpatient psychotherapy for BPD.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A qualitative review on the effectiveness and therapy outcome predictors was conducted based on a literature search in PubMed.

This article addresses the issue of complex trauma in veterans and treatments for symptom presentations resulting from complex trauma exposure. While various definitions have been proposed for complex trauma, the clinical issues related to it are relevant for veterans as they are at risk for cumulative trauma exposures such as multiple combat deployments and military sexual trauma. Several treatments were either developed to address and/or implemented with complex trauma. This article discusses three of these treatments that share a stage-based approach, focusing on the present (e.g., skills t
