Arrested Descent of the Thyroid: A New Manifestation of Abnormal Thyroid Embryology.

In this article, we review the normal embryology of the thyroid gland, categorize the ways in which this embryology can fail, and describe how those failures manifest clinically and radiologically. Finally, we describe a new manifestation of abnormal thyroid embryology. Laryngoscope, 134:995-997, 2024.

Embryology of the anterior communicating artery complex: implications on possible adult variants.

The anterior cerebral artery (ACA) and the anterior communicating artery (AComA) are important arteries of the telencephalon and are prominent location for cerebral aneurysms. Their embryological development is closely linked, and explains the possible variants seen in adults. In this paper, we present details related to the development of these two arteries, focusing on some variants such as the infra-optic course of the ACA, the unpaired ACA, and the persistent primitive olfactory artery.

Nerve growth factor and nociception: from experimental embryology to new analgesic therapy.

Nerve growth factor (NGF) is central to the development and functional regulation of sensory neurons that signal the first events that lead to pain. These sensory neurons, called nociceptors, require NGF in the early embryo to survive and also for their functional maturation. The long road from the discovery of NGF and its roles during development to the realization that NGF plays a major role in the pathophysiology of inflammatory pain will be reviewed. In particular, we will discuss the various signaling events initiated by NGF that lead to long-lasting thermal and mechanical hyperalgesia in

Mayer-rokitansky-kuster-hauser syndrome: embryology, genetics and clinical and surgical treatment.

Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser (MRKH) syndrome is a pathological condition characterized by primary amenorrhea and infertility and by congenital aplasia of the uterus and of the upper vagina. The development of secondary sexual characters is normal as well as that the karyotype (46,XX). Etiologically, this syndrome may be caused by the lack of development of the Müllerian ducts between the fifth and the sixth weeks of gestation. To explain this condition, it has been suggested that in patients with MRKH syndrome, there is a very strong hyperincretion of Müllerian-inhibiting factor (MIF), which

Embryology and genetics of primary vesico-ureteric reflux and associated renal dysplasia.

Congenital anomalies of the kidney and urinary tract, as well as primary vesico-ureteric reflux (VUR) and associated renal dysplasia, are the most relevant causes of end-stage renal failure in the pediatric population. In vivo and in vitro experimental studies have allowed the identification of several genes involved both in ureteric bud branching, ureteric elongation and insertion into the bladder, and in nephrogenesis. It has been proposed that both renal and ureteral abnormalities, as well as the associated renal hypo-dysplasia, may derive from a common mechanism as the result of a dysregul

Part 1. Understanding the embryology and genetics of cleft lip and palate.

Craniofacial birth defects are the fourth most common congenital anomaly in newborns. Cleft lip and cleft palate (CL/CP) are the most common and immediately recognizable craniofacial anomalies. Some are diagnosed prenatally on ultrasound; more often, they are first noted in the delivery room. The infant may have a cleft that is unilateral, bilateral, complete, or incomplete, and it may involve the lip only, the palate only, or both. Cleft lip and/or cleft palate are often isolated nonsyndromic occurrences; however, when associated with other abnormal physical findings, a recognizable syndrome

Anatomy and embryology of the lateral sellar compartment (cavernous sinus) medial wall.

In order to study the microanatomy of the lateral sellar compartment (cavernous sinus) medial wall, serial histological sections of human fetuses and adults, as well as dissections under operative microscope, were performed. The results were compared to high resolution Magnetic Resonance Images in human, to microdissections and to serial histological sections in adult nonhuman primates (Papio Cynocephalus anubis). We were able to show that the sellar compartment and both lateral sellar osteodural compartments are not separated from each other by a dural wall, but by a more or less dense, inter

Interhemispheric lipoma with variable callosal dysgenesis: relationship between embryology, morphology, and symptomatology.

Eight interhemispheric lipomas (five tubulonodular lipomas and three curvilinear lipomas) were examined by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The purpose was to further investigate the relationship between the morphology of the different subtypes and the clinical presentation. The imaging findings were reviewed in light of a recent theory on the development of the corpus callosum. Interhemispheric lipomas should be considered as one entity with a variable expression depending on the severity and/or the time of the insult. Curvilinear lipomas can be either small or extensive and are usually not

The embryology and management of congenital pouch colon associated with anorectal agenesis.

Forty-one infants with a pouch colon malformation accompanied by a high anorectal anomaly were treated between January 1986 and December 1990. The 41 cases constituted 9% of all anorectal malformations and 15.2% of high defects managed during this period. There were 32 boys and nine girls; three of the girls had an associated cloaca. Many of the babies presented in poor condition, with gross abdominal distension caused by the distended colonic pouch. The typical radiological feature was an enormously distended colonic shadow occupying more than 50% of the width of the abdomen. At the time of s

Embryology of the urinary tract and prenatal diagnosis of congenital obstructive anomalies.

Fetal malformations within the urinary tract are frequently detected during sonographic examination in the second and third trimester of pregnancy. Detection has been facilitated by a continued evolution of new technological equipment and by increased knowledge regarding the existence of direct sonographic patterns (kidneys) and/or indirect sonographic patterns (amniotic fluid volume). A wide range of variability and severity of such malformations has been noted, from the so-called "functional" types which disappear spontaneously after birth, to those requiring postnatal surgery, as well as th

Parathyroid Adenoma Orientation for Gland Embryologic Origin on Ultrasonography.

IMPORTANCE: Accurate preoperative localization is critical to success in targeted parathyroidectomy for primary hyperparathyroidism. OBJECTIVE: To determine if the association between the long axis of a parathyroid adenoma (PTA) candidate and strap musculature on sagittal ultrasonography (US) can be used to predict the embryologic origin of the gland. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This diagnostic study was performed using the Stanford Research Repository. Patients 18 years or older with primary hyperparathyroidism who underwent parathyroidectomy between January 2009 and October 2021 wer

A persistent trigeminal artery demonstrates cerebrovascular embryologic development.

BACKGROUND: Cerebrovascular embryologic development is characterized by the presence of four well-described carotid-vertebrobasilar (VB) anastomoses. As the fetal hindbrain matures and the VB system develops, these connections involute, yet some may persist into adulthood. The persistent primitive trigeminal artery (PPTA) is the most common of these anastomoses. In this report, we describe a unique variant of the PPTA and a four-way division of the VB circulation. CASE DESCRIPTION: A female in her 70s presented with a Fisher Grade 4 subarachnoid hemorrhage. Catheter angiography revealed a fet

Biliary atresia & choledochal malformation--Embryological and anatomical considerations.

The two main biliary pathologies in paediatric practice, biliary atresia and choledochal malformations (CM), have their origins within prenatal life. Nevertheless, the actual mechanisms remain elusive with many unanswered questions. The extrahepatic bile duct develops as a funnel-like structure emerging from the foregut from about 3-4 weeks of gestation into the mesenchyme of the septum transversum. The cranial elements of this contain hepatoblasts - the precursors to the two key cell lines that will become hepatocytes and biliary epithelial cells. The intrahepatic bile ducts develop separatel

Temperature Decline in Embryological Culture Dishes outside Incubator.

BACKGROUND: In embryological culture dishes, there is a temperature decline when they are removed outside incubators. This study aimed at investigating the effects of this temperature decline within a certain time frame, the type of culture dish with or without the use of laminar air flow and whether it is possible to achieve a sufficient thermal control with the use of a heating stage. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this experimental study, the temperatures of four different types of polystyrene dishes [50 mm intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), 35 mm, 60 mm, 90 mm], filled with culture mediu

Intestinal duplication in the tongue: embryological and radiological point of view.

Intestinal duplication in the tongue is a rare entity. Occurrence in the anterior part of the tongue is exceptional. We report an intestinal duplication in the tongue causing eating difficulties and discuss the accuracy of embryologic and histopathology knowledge as radiology. A transoral complete resection of the lesion was performed, without postoperative complications. There was no recurrence with a follow-up of 15 years.

DOOR syndrome: A case report and its embryological basis.

DOOR syndrome is an extremely rare genetic disorder. "DOOR″ is an acronym to describe the combination of: deafness, onychodystrophy, osteodystrophy and mental retardation. We present a patient, with all of the above-mentioned main symptoms, that was rehabilitated with convencional hearing aids. The presented case suggested that every case of deafness and abnormal nails and phalanges in the hands and feet should have a clinical diagnosis of possible DOOR syndrome. Based on embryological process, congenital abnormal nails or phalanges highlights the importance for detailed hearing screening.

Development and Growth of the Normal Cranial Vault : An Embryologic Review.

Understanding the development of a skull deformity requires an understanding of the normal morphogenesis of the cranium. Craniosynostosis is the premature, pathologic ossification of one or more cranial sutures leading to skull deformities. A review of the English medical literature using textbooks and standard search engines was performed to gather information about the prenatal development and growth of the cranial vault of the neurocranium. A process of morphogenic sequencing begins during prenatal development and growth, continues postnatally, and contributes to the basis for the different

A Functional Perspective on the Embryology and Anatomy of the Cerebral Blood Supply.

The anatomy of the arterial system supplying blood to the brain can influence the development of arterial disease such as aneurysms, dolichoectasia and atherosclerosis. As the arteries supplying blood to the brain develop during embryogenesis, variation in their anatomy may occur and this variation may influence the development of arterial disease. Angiogenesis, which occurs mainly by sprouting of parent arteries, is the first stage at which variations can occur. At day 24 of embryological life, the internal carotid artery is the first artery to form and it provides all the blood required by t
