Analysis of lens fracture in precision glass molding with the finite element method.

Precision glass molding (PGM) technology has recently emerged as a promising fabrication method for mass-fabricating optical glass lenses with complex surfaces. However, lens fracture as a common problem has not been analyzed in detail. In this paper, the divergent cone cracks in the molded lens were analyzed using the finite element method, because crack propagation cannot be seen in the molding process. A three-dimensional model was established in MSC Marc software for analyzing the temperature, stress components, and principal stress of the glass in different molding stages. The crack paths

Mechanical Effects of Cochlear Implants on Residual Hearing Loss: A Finite Element Analysis.

The effects of cochlear implants on residual hearing loss is investigated through a finite element model of human auditory periphery consisting of the cochlea and middle ear. The simulation results show that a round window stiffness is the dominant factor in residual hearing loss. The increased round window stiffness to five times caused over 4 dB residual hearing loss at low frequencies below 500 Hz. Without considering round window ossification, inserting a cochlear implant can show at most 4 dB difference of residual hearing loss in magnitude from the no-implant case although the cochlear i

Investigation of femur fracture potential in common pediatric falls using finite element analysis.

A finite element (FE) model of an 11-month-old child's femur was developed to evaluate fracture risk in short-distance feet-first falls and bed falls. Pediatric material properties were applied to the FE model. Femur loading was derived from previously conducted fall experiments using a child surrogate where fall conditions (e.g., fall height, impact surface) were varied. Fracture thresholds based on principal stress and strain were used to examine potential for fracture. Peak stress/strain were significantly greater for feet-first falls from greater heights and onto harder impact surfaces. Fe

Biomechanical analysis for total distalization of the mandibular dentition: A finite element study.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this finite element study was to analyze and clarify the mechanics of tooth movement patterns for total distalization of the mandibular dentition based on force angulation. METHODS: Long-term orthodontic movement of the mandibular dentition was simulated by accumulating the initial displacement of teeth produced by elastic deformation of the periodontal ligament. RESULTS: Displacement of each tooth was caused by movement of the whole dentition, elastic deflection of the archwire, and clearance gap between the archwire and bracket slot. The whole dentition was rotated

Biomechanical comparison of 2 augmented glenoid designs: an integrated kinematic finite element analysis.

BACKGROUND: Augmented glenoid implants are available to help restore the biomechanics of the glenohumeral joint with excessive retroversion. It is imperative to understand their behavior to make a knowledgeable preoperative decision. Therefore, our goal was to identify an optimal augmented glenoid design based on finite element analysis (FEA) under maximum physiological loading. METHODS: FEA models of 2 augmented glenoid designs-wedge and step-were created per the manufacturers' specifications and virtually implanted in a scapula model to correct 20° of retroversion. Testing hypotheses for the function of the carnivoran baculum using finite-element analysis.

The baculum (os penis) is a mineralized bone within the glans of the mammalian penis and is one of the most morphologically diverse structures in the mammal skeleton. Recent experimental work provides compelling evidence for sexual selection shaping the baculum, yet the functional mechanism by which this occurs remains unknown. Previous studies have tested biomechanical hypotheses for the role of the baculum based on simple metrics such as length and diameter, ignoring the wealth of additional shape complexity present. For the first time, to our knowledge, we apply a computational simulation a

Resorptive potential of impacted mandibular third molars: 3D simulation by finite element analysis.

OBJECTIVES: Previous studies have suggested a relationship between resorption in second molars and pressure from the eruptive force of the third molar. The aim of this study was to simulate functional forces in a mandible model by means of finite element analysis and then assess the biomechanical response produced by impacted third molars on the roots of the second molar. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cone beam computed tomography scan presenting an impacted mandibular third molar was segmented (Mimics V17 software). The modeling process was performed using the reverse engineering technique provid

A Parameterized Ultrasound-Based Finite Element Analysis of the Mechanical Environment of Pregnancy.

Preterm birth is the leading cause of childhood mortality and can lead to health risks in survivors. The mechanical functions of the uterus, fetal membranes, and cervix have dynamic roles to protect the fetus during gestation. To understand their mechanical function and relation to preterm birth, we built a three-dimensional parameterized finite element model of pregnancy. This model is generated by an automated procedure that is informed by maternal ultrasound measurements. A baseline model at 25 weeks of gestation was characterized, and to visualize the impact of cervical structural paramete

Finite element analysis and clinical complications in mandibular implant-overdentures opposing maxillary dentures.

Denture fracture is a common clinical complication caused by improper material selection, design, or fabrication technique. This study aimed to investigate the effect of two attachment systems on fracture risk of the implant-overdentures (IOD) via finite element analysis (FEA), using the force distributions obtained from patients' occlusal analyses and to compare the obtained results with the clinical complications associated with these attachments. A three-dimensional jaw model comprised of the edentulous bones was constructed. Three types of mandibular prostheses including complete denture (

Optimal parameters to avoid thermal necrosis during bone drilling: A finite element analysis.

The drilling bone may potentially cause excessive frictional heat, which can lead to local bone necrosis. This heat generation and local necrosis has been suggested to contribute to the resorption of bone around the placed screws, ending in loss of screw purchase in the bone and inadvertent loosening and/or the bone-implant construct. In vivo studies on this subject have inherent obstacles not the least of which is controlling the variables and real time bone temperature data acquisition. Theoretical models can be generated using computer software and the inclusion of known constants for the m

Significance of Lateral Pillar in Osteonecrosis of Femoral Head: A Finite Element Analysis.

BACKGROUND: The lateral pillar of the femoral head is an important site for disease development such as osteonecrosis of the femoral head. The femoral head consists of medial, central, and lateral pillars. This study aimed to determine the biomechanical effects of early osteonecrosis in pillars of the femoral head via a finite element (FE) analysis. METHODS: A three-dimensional FE model of the intact hip joint was constructed from the image data of a healthy control. Further, a set of six early osteonecrosis models was developed based on the three-pillar classification. The von Mises stress a

Combined implant-residual tooth supported prosthesis after tooth hemisection: A finite element analysis.

Tooth hemisection preserves partial tooth structure and reduces the resorption of alveolar bone. The aim of this study was to analyze the feasibility of preserving a molar after hemisection and inserting a dental implant with different prosthetic superstructures by means of finite element analysis. First, the distance between the root of the mandibular second premolar and the distal root of the first molar were measured in 80 cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) data sets. Based on these data, the lower right posterior jaw segment was reconstructed and the geometries of the appropriate implant

Finite element analysis of periventricular lucency in hydrocephalus: extravasation or transependymal CSF absorption?

OBJECTIVE: Periventricular lucency (PVL) is often observed in the hydrocephalic brain on CT or MRI. Earlier studies have proposed the extravasation of ventricular CSF into the periventricular white matter or transependymal CSF absorption as possible causes of PVL in hydrocephalus. However, there is insufficient evidence for either theory to be conclusive. METHODS: A finite element (FE) model of the hydrocephalic brain with detailed anatomical geometry was constructed to investigate the possible mechanism of PVL in hydrocephalus. The initiation of hydrocephalus was modeled by applying a transm

Finite element analysis of uncommonly large renal arteriovenous malformation--adjacent renal cyst complex.

BACKGROUND: Renal arteriovenous malformation (RAVM) represents abnormal communication between the intrarenal arterial and venous system. The purpose of this study was to investigate hemodynamics and biomechanics quantities which may influence the instability of RAVM and imply clinical complications. METHODS: A detailed 3D reconstruction of RAVM was obtained from the patient CT scans, aortic inlet flow was measured by color-flow Doppler ultrasound, while material characteristics were adopted from the literature. A numerical finite element analysis (FEA) of the blood flow was performed by solvi

A finite element analysis of two novel screw designs for scaphoid waist fractures.

The scaphoid is the most often fractured carpal bone. Scaphoid fracture repair with a headless compression screw allows for early functional recovery. The rotational stability of a single screw may be limited, having a potential negative impact on the healing process. Two novel screws have been designed to provide improved rotational stability compared to the existing ones. Using a computational finite element model of a scaphoid osteotomy, we compared the efficacy of one simple screw and the two new screws in restricting inter-fragmentary motion (IFM) in three functional positions of the wris
