Outcome of cranial firearm injuries in civilian population based on a novel classification system.

BACKGROUND: Cranial firearm injuries (CFAIs) are expected to be frequent during warfare; however, it is becoming increasingly common among civilian population in our part of the world. These injuries are associated with significant morbidity and mortality in addition to financial loss. The objective of our study is to evaluate the pattern of gunshot injuries to cranium and their outcome. METHODS: The study was conducted on 114 patients presenting with CFAIs to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, Karachi, Pakistan, between June 2015 and January 2019. Patients were evaluated with respect to age

Views on Firearm Safety Among Caregivers of People With Alzheimer Disease and Related Dementias.

IMPORTANCE: The population of adults with Alzheimer disease and related dementias (ADRD) is increasing, and many people with ADRD have access to firearms. Little is known, however, about how caregivers of people with ADRD think about or address firearm safety. OBJECTIVE: To assess views on firearm safety risks among caregivers of persons with ADRD, experiences of caregivers with health care professional-delivered counseling, and their preferred sources of information about firearm safety. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This survey study used a probability-based online survey (National Fi

Firearm Ownership Among Military Veterans With PTSD: A Profile of Demographic and Psychosocial Correlates.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), a condition that disproportionately affects military veterans, is associated with heightened rates of aggression and suicide. Although experience with firearms is common among this population, virtually nothing is known regarding who is more likely to own a firearm and whether firearm ownership is differentially associated with psychological and behavioral risk factors among veterans with PTSD. Of 465 veterans (79% male) entering PTSD treatment, 28% owned a firearm (median number of firearms among owners = 3, range = 1-40). Firearm owners reported higher

Warning: This may be as dangerous as firearm injuries;"grease-gun injury": A case report.

High-pressure injection gun (Grease-gun) injuries mainly occur with industrial labourers. Injuries associated with high pressure grease guns are very rare and frequently involve the hand and chest. The non-dominant hand is generally injured since the grease gun is usually held in the dominant hand. Even if high-pressure injection injury causes only a small lesion in the skin, it is still characterized by severe damage to subcutaneous tissue. Since initial presentation may be deceptive, treatment is frequently delayed. The characteristics of the material injected need to be known as a priority,

Management of firearm injuries to the facial skeleton: Outcomes from early primary intervention.

AIM: Treatment of maxillofacial firearm injuries is still controversial with regard to timing of management. We postulate that not all maxillofacial firearm injuries need be delayed and that many may be treated early. To this end, a 19-year retrospective study was undertaken seeking to evaluate patients treated for firearm injuries to the facial skeleton at our center. The criteria which dictated when to operate are presented as are the results, benefits, and outcomes of the patients treated acutely. PATIENTS AND METHODS: From 1991 to 2010, 51 patients with maxillofacial firearm injuries were

Gut barrier function damage following multiple firearm injuries in a porcine model.

OBJECTIVE: To study the characteristics and pathogenesis of gut barrier damage following multiple firearm injuries in a porcine model. METHODS: Twenty-four small pigs were divided into 4 groups: control group (n = 6, group C), group H (n = 6, gunshot-induced tangential fracture of parietal bone), group L (n = 6, gunshot-induced comminuted fracture of bilateral femora) and group M (n = 6, combined group H + L). Gastric intramucosal pH (pHi), plasma endotoxin levels in portal vein, and plasma D-lactate levels were measured and blood samples were cultured at different intervals after trauma. The

[Firearm wounds of the lower urinary tract in men. Surgical management in emergency context].

The lower urinary tract is injured in less than 1% of all firearm wounds in men. In war medicine, blast wounds occur in 75% of the cases while in civil medicine ballistic injuries are more frequent. When the bladder and the posterior urethra is involved, the projectile usually follows a path through the gluteal muscles and pelvis. A perineal genital path is usually found for injuries to the anterior urethra. This explains the frequency of associated vascular and colorectal lesions in pelvic wounds and genital injuries in perineal wounds. Bone and muscle injuries occur in both situations. A men

The effect of indirect injury to peripheral nerves on wound healing after firearm wounds.

This paper reports the pathologic and functional changes of the sciatic nerve indirectly injured by firearms and its effect on wound healing. Twelve dogs were used. Their hind legs were shot with 1.03-gram steel spheres, avoiding direct injury to the sciatic nerve. The experimental animals were divided into two groups according to the impact velocity, that is, a 1,500 m/sec high velocity projectile (HVP) group and a 400 m/sec, low velocity projectile (LVP) group as a control. After wounding, the same procedure was followed in all dogs. At intervals, the tissues of the wound track were excised

[Simultaneous injury of 4 iliac veins by firearm: report of a case and review of the literature].

Iliac vessel injuries constitute approximately 10 percent of all vascular traumatic lesions. The high mortality rate is due to the massive exsanguination and the high frequency of associated injuries. Iliac vein injury occurs either isolated or in association with the arterial lesion. Multiple injuries of iliac veins are uncommon and frequently fatal. An unusual case, in which there were injuries of the four iliac veins by gunshot is described. A review of literature of this condition and a discussion about the diagnosis, treatment and factors affecting mortality rate is presented. No other su

Cumulative Incidence and Risk Factors for Pediatric Firearm Reinjury: A Two-Center Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Pediatric patients who experience firearm injury may be at risk for subsequent reinjury, yet the timing and predictors of recurrence remain poorly defined. Characterizing reinjury patterns at both individual and system levels is essential for informing targeted prevention strategies. METHODS: We performed a retrospective review (2010-2024) of patients aged 0-18 years presenting with non-self-inflicted firearm injuries to two Level I pediatric and adult trauma centers. Cross-institutional database linkage was used to identify reinjury events. Cumulative incidence functions estimate

Lead Ammunition Use and Post-Shooting Hygiene Practices Among U.S. Firearm Owners.

INTRODUCTION: Lead is a neurotoxicant with no safe exposure level. Firearm use represents an underrecognized source of exposure through aerosolized lead from ammunition and primers, with the potential for secondary and tertiary take-home exposures that may affect children. Few studies have quantified firearm use, and to the authors' knowledge, none have considered ammunition type or post-shooting hygiene behaviors. METHODS: A cross-sectional analysis of the National Firearm Survey, a nationally representative survey conducted in December 2024 and analyzed in 2025-2026, was performed. The samp

Firearm safety counseling is common but inconsistent: A survey of pediatric clinicians in the Southeastern United States.

OBJECTIVE: Firearm injury is the leading cause of death among children. Evidence shows that counseling around firearm safety from trusted clinicians increases safe storage practices. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has recommended pediatricians provide counseling on the topic to patients and caregivers, yet gaps remain in understanding how counseling is delivered, especially in the Southeastern US. This study aimed to describe patterns of and barriers to firearm anticipatory guidance among pediatric clinicians in the Southeast. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was developed to asses

Efficacy of Technology-Augmented Behavioral Counseling for Risky Firearm Behaviors: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

IMPORTANCE: Firearm violence is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality for US adolescents and emerging adults (A/EAs). Health care visits are an important opportunity to provide preventive counseling addressing risky firearm behaviors (RFBs), which increase fatal and nonfatal firearm injury risk, as well as associated negative health and social outcomes. OBJECTIVE: To determine the efficacy of a technology-augmented behavioral counseling intervention addressing RFBs among A/EAs seeking emergency department (ED) treatment. Associations between county-level poverty and firearm injury health encounters in Maryland, USA.

OBJECTIVE: Firearm injuries are among the four leading causes of injury deaths in the United States. Prior studies have shown the association between poverty and firearm injuries on the national level, but more focused data at the state level has yet to be studied. The objective of this study was to examine the association between county-level poverty and firearm injury health encounters in Maryland, USA. STUDY DESIGN: This was an ecological study conducted on counties in Maryland from July 2015-July 2020. METHODS: This study consisted of residents of all ages with firearm injuries who prese

Pediatric healthcare worker perspectives on implementation of a secure firearm storage program: a qualitative study.

OBJECTIVE: Primary care-based secure firearm storage programs are well-positioned to prevent firearm-related injury, the leading cause of death for young people in the United States. While recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics and US Surgeon General, these programs have yet to become routine practice. Our cluster randomized hybrid effectiveness-implementation trial studied implementation of a universal evidence-based secure firearm storage program, S.A.F.E. Firearm (Suicide and Accident Prevention through Family Education) across 30 clinics in two large health systems. S.A.F.E. Fir

Firearm-Related Upper-Limb Injuries in Children: An 8-Year Single Institution Analysis.

PURPOSE: Pediatric firearm-related injuries are rising, reflecting an ongoing public health concern and burden on the health care system. However, studies examining regional gunshot wound (GSW) trends among children are scarce. We evaluated upper-limb injuries from GSWs at our state's sole level-1 trauma center over 8 years. We hypothesize there would be an increase in upper limb ballistic injuries in our pediatric population and that understanding these trends may lead to improved supportive care and interventions aimed at mitigating future occurrences. METHODS: A retrospective chart review

Firearm homicide and microterritorial concentration of lethal violence in Lima-Callao, Peru, 2018-2025.

BACKGROUND: Homicide is an important injury prevention challenge in Latin American cities, but metropolitan trends can mask substantial local variation. Evidence from Peru remains limited, particularly on whether recent increases in homicide have been driven by firearm violence and concentrated within urban microterritories. METHODS: We conducted a population-based ecological study of homicide mortality in the Lima-Callao metropolitan area using Peru's National Death Information System, covering 2018 to 2025. We describe annual homicide counts and rates overall and by mechanism, distinguishin

Evaluating interactive computerized training to teach practitioners to implement firearm safety skills training.

Researchers have shown that behavioral skills training (BST) and in situ training are effective for teaching firearm safety skills to children. Within the safety skills literature, there is evidence that manualized interventions are effective for teaching parents and teachers to conduct BST. An approach that has not been evaluated for teaching safety skills is interactive computerized training (ICT). The purpose of the current study was to evaluate an ICT program with three Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBA) who provided services to clients with autism spectrum disorder. In the final pha
