Microbial, proteomic, and metabolomic profiling of the estrous cycle in wild house mice.

Symbiotic microbial communities affect the host immune system and produce molecules contributing to the odor of an individual. In many mammalian species, saliva and vaginal fluids are important sources of chemical signals that originate from bacterial metabolism and may act as honest signals of health and reproductive status. In this study, we aimed to define oral and vaginal microbiomes and their dynamics throughout the estrous cycle in wild house mice. In addition, we analyzed a subset of vaginal proteomes and metabolomes to detect potential interactions with microbiomes. 16S rRNA sequencing

Dysbiosis of saliva microbiome in patients with oral lichen planus.

BACKGROUND: Oral microbiota is not only important for maintaining oral health but also plays a role in various oral diseases. However, studies regarding microbiome changes in oral lichen planus (OLP) are very limited. To the best of our knowledge, there has been only two studies investigating salivary microbiome changes in OLP. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to identify the characteristic microbial profile in the saliva of OLP patients, with or without erosive lesions, and compare that with recurrent aphthous ulcer (RAU), a common oral immunological disorder that also shows multiple

The role of antibiotic prophylaxis in endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography; a retrospective single-center evaluation.

OBJECTIVE: Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreaticography (ERCP) can be complicated by post-ERCP cholangitis even when performed by experienced endoscopists. Therefore, antibiotic prophylaxis is recommended for certain patients, but controversy exists as to which patient groups really benefit from this strategy. We retrospectively evaluated the use of antibiotics in a primary teaching hospital in the Netherlands with regard to the incidence of post-ERCP cholangitis and cholecystitis. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Retrospective single-center evaluation in a primary teaching hospital. All consecutive

Changes in the vaginal microbiome in female patients with condyloma acuminatum and its impact on persistent HPV infection.

Condyloma acuminatum (CA) is one of the most common sexually transmitted diseases, and is characterized by a long incubation period and a high recurrence rate. The vaginal microbiome significantly impacts female reproductive health, influencing susceptibility to human papillomavirus (HPV) infections and related conditions such as CA. However, the role of the vaginal microbiome in the development of CA, especially regarding persistent HPV infection and CA recurrence, remains unclear. We aimed to investigate changes in the vaginal microbiota among female patients with vaginal CA and to determine

Oral microbiota assessment at different time points during the first year of life: delivery mode and breastfeeding shape the bacterial community.

BACKGROUND: The assembly of the oral microbiota during the first year of life is a critical process that may influence long-term health and immunological development. While the gut microbiome has been extensively studied, early oral colonization patterns remain less understood. This study aimed to characterize the oral microbial succession in infants and to evaluate the impact of two primary clinical factors-delivery mode and breastfeeding practices-on microbial composition from birth through the first 12 months of life. METHODS: Forty-eight newborns were prospectively recruited between Janua

Short-chain fatty acid-producing microbes differentiate non-infectious and infectious neutropenic fever in leukemia.

UNLABELLED: Neutropenic fever (NF) is often the first sign of infection in patients with hematologic malignancies, but its cause is frequently unknown, leading to broad-spectrum antibiotic use without confirmed infections. Although research links gut microbiome disruptions to treatment-related infections, it typically examines NF as the outcome, leaving a gap in understanding how the microbiome and metabolic factors distinguish infectious from non-infectious cases. Stool samples from acute myeloid leukemia patients were analyzed to characterize gut microbiome composition and fecal metabolites

Potential novel biomarkers in small intestine for obesity/obesity resistance revealed by multi-omics analysis.

BACKGROUND: Although obesity is caused by different factors, individual susceptibility to obesity differs among people under the same circumstances. The microbiota in the caecum or fresh faeces and metabolites in blood or urine contribute to obesity resistance; however, the microbiota or metabolites in the small intestine have not been extensively studied. METHODS: To investigate the relationship between the microbiota or metabolites in the small intestine and susceptibility to obesity, eighty-eight male C57BL/6 mice were fed a high-fat diet (HFD) for 8 weeks to establish two models of obesit

Characterization of Lung and Oral Microbiomes in Lung Cancer Patients Using Culturomics and 16S rRNA Gene Sequencing.

Recently, microbiota dysbiosis in lung cancer has attracted immense attention. Studies on lung microbes are mostly based on sequencing, which has left the potentially functional bacteria with extremely low abundance uncovered. In this study, we characterized and compared the lung and oral cavity microbiotas using culturomics and 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Of the 198 bacteria identified at the species level from bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) samples, Firmicutes was predominant (39.90%). Twenty bacterial species isolated from BALF samples were present in at least half of the patients and we

Oral microbiota transplantation for intra-oral halitosis: a feasibility analysis based on an oral microbiota colonization trial in Wistar rats.

BACKGROUND: Intra-oral halitosis (IOH) is bad breath produced locally by the mouth in addition to systemic diseases and is one of the main causes of interpersonal communication and psychological disorders in modern society. However, current treatment modalities still only alleviate IOH and do not eradicate it. Therefore, based on the differential performance of oral microecology in IOH patients, we propose a microbiota transplantation treatment aimed at restoring oral microecological balance and analyze its feasibility by oral flora colonization test in Wistar rats. OBJECTIVE: Saliva flora sa

Unveiling the microbial shift: the impact of group B Streptococcus on vaginal microbiota and inflammation in late pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Group B Streptococcus (GBS) commonly colonizes the female reproductive tract and rectum. An estimated 19.7 million pregnant women worldwide are colonized with GBS. Infection during late pregnancy can lead to adverse pregnancy outcomes. Pregnant women infected with GBS face a significantly increased risk of transmitting the bacteria to their newborns during delivery, potentially resulting in serious conditions such as sepsis, pneumonia, and meningitis major contributors to neonatal morbidity and mortality. While previous studies have primarily focused on the prevalence of GBS coloni
