Pre-Eruptive Intracoronal Resorption (PEIR) is a rare yet significant phenomenon in which an abnormal, well-circumscribed, radiolucent area develops in the tooth prior to eruption. This case report outlines the treatment of a 12 year old Hispanic female who was referred for endodontic evaluation of tooth #31 and subsequently diagnosed with PEIR. The patient's chief complaint was recorded as "spontaneous pain" in the lower right quadrant of her jaw. Clinical examination revealed a partially erupted tooth #31 with no visible decay. Radiographic examination, including a cone beam computed tomogra

This study aimed to analyse the immunohistochemical profile of inflammatory infiltrates in the gingival tissue of patients undergoing orthodontic treatment in relation to patients’ titanium and/or nickel allergy status. Patients with gingival enlargement received initial periodontal therapy, followed by external gingivectomy in the case of persistent gingival enlargement. The sample included 44 patients (22 had metal allergic sensitisation). Histopathological changes were assessed, and an immunohistochemical analysis was performed on formalin-fixed and paraffin-embedded gingival samples using

Laser systems have been used in the practice of dentistry for >35 years. Laser systems have so many advantages, such as increase patient cooperation, reduce the duration of treatment time, and help the orthodontists to enhance the design of a patient's smile to improve treatment efficacy, and the success of orthodontic treatments can also be improved by diminishing the orthodontic pain and the discomfort of the patients. Laser systems also have some disadvantages, such as cost, large space requirements for some types, and high-risk potential for physician and patient if not used at the appropr

Oral changes following radiotherapy are not uncommon. Oral mucositis, alteration in salivary gland function, radiation caries, and gingival changes have all been reported following radiotherapy and chemotherapy. The gingival changes seen after radiotherapy may be unusual and often cause diagnostic dilemma. Metastasis to the gingiva has also to be ruled out in these cases. A 30-year-old female patient presented with enlargement of the gingiva of 6 months' duration and lower lip swelling of 7 months' duration. She was a known case of carcinoma of nasopharynx and had received radiotherapy and che

The effect of systemic doxycycline administration on frequency of root resorption cavities and extent of bone loss following periodontal surgery was studied in albino rats. Thirty Wistar rats with healthy gingiva were divided into four groups. Six untreated animals (Group 1) served as controls. Gingivectomy (Group 2, six rats), mucoperiosteal flap operation (Group 3, eight rats), and mucoperiosteal flap operation with doxycycline added to the drinking water (Group 4, 10 rats) were performed on the palatal aspect of maxillary left molars. After a healing period of 3 wk, the rats were killed by

OBJECTIVES: This study evaluated the clinical outcomes, surgical accuracy, and patient satisfaction in treating excessive gingival display caused by altered passive eruption (APE) using a comprehensive digital workflow and double surgical guide.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A prospective case series study was conducted enrolling 30 patients diagnosed with APE Type 1B. Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT), intraoral scanning, and digital smile design were used to design and fabricate a 3D-printed double surgical guide for both gingivectomy and osteotomy. The primary outcome was surgical accuracy, as

Dentofacial disharmony in patients with cerebral palsy (CP) can lead to low self-esteem and functional limitations. However, medical and behavioral challenges in patients with developmental disorders often prevent dental practitioners from offering the necessary treatment. This report describes the clinical interdisciplinary management of a 20-year-old man with CP, including orthodontic, periodontal, and orthognathic surgery therapy. The patient presented with the chief complaint of having difficulty chewing, was wheelchair dependent, had poor orofacial muscle control, and exhibited a Class II

Gingival recessions have multifactorial etiology and are often associated with non-caries cervical lesions. Different surgical techniques have been proposed over the years for their treatment, according to the severity of the recession. A novel technique, called restoration guided creeping attachment (RGCA), for the treatment of combined gingival recession and non-caries cervical lesion is presented. RGCA aims at treating Miller class I and II recessions using a specifically designed composite restoration and a minimally invasive approach. A clinical case describing the technique and forming t

The purpose of this study was to longitudinally monitor changes in the position of the soft tissue margin at 26 buccal sites surgically deprived of all gingival tissue. A baseline examination carried out 6 months after treatment revealed that the sites to be monitored were lacking or had only a minimal zone (less than 1 mm) of regenerated attached gingiva. 12 control sites with an "adequate" width of attached gingiva (greater than 1 mm) were also examined. Assessments of oral hygiene and gingival conditions, probing pocket depths, probing attachment levels, position of the soft tissue margin,

Both the modified Widman flap and the intrasulcular incision technique produced significant and similar reductions in pocket depth and increases in attachment. Loss of attachment occurred where the initial pocket depth was less than 3 mm. Both techniques resulted in significant and similar increases in gingival recession. Neither technique affected tooth mobility or plaque scores to a clinically important degree. Historically, the necessity for removal of the sulcular epithelium in the course of periodontal therapy is a widely accepted tenet. This study fails to clinically validate this concep

Idiopathic gingival fibromatosis (GF), also known as gingivomatosis, is a rare condition in childhood, with an unknown aetiology. The oral manifestations of the condition are varied and depend on the severity and age of involvement. This paper describe the case of a 5-year-old male child with extensive gingival enlargement covering almost all the maxillary and mandibular teeth resulted in difficulty with speech, mastication and poor aesthetics. Clinical and radiographic examination along with haematological investigations ruled out any systemic association. The case was managed with convention

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The retention of suprabony connective fibres attached into the root cementum during fibre retention osseous resective surgery (FibReORS) results in a more conservative intrasurgical removal of bone, and limits further bone loss and patient morbidity during healing, compared with conventional osseous resective surgery (ORS). This may be a result of the protective effect of preserved connective tissue over the interproximal sites and the lower activation of the inflammatory mechanisms. Thus, the aim of this pilot study was to compare the expression of inflammatory and o

Impacted teeth present many problems for the orthodontist. They can compromise tooth movement, esthetics, and functional outcomes. The second most commonly impacted tooth, after the maxillary third molar, is the maxillary canine, with an incidence from 1% to 2.5%. Maxillary canines can be impacted facially or palatally and are more common in female patients than in male patients. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to address the incidence and etiology associated with impacted maxillary canines, the clinical and radiographic evaluation of the situation, and the techniques for managing this

The use of lasers in dentistry has revolutionized dental procedures, providing signif i cant advantages over traditional techniques. Lasers offer enhanced precision, reduced bleeding, faster healing times, and improved patient comfort. This review explores CO2 lasers, diode lasers, Er, and Er, Cr lasers, and Photobiomodulation and Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT). CO2 Lasers: Introduced in the 1970s, CO2 lasers are ef f ective for soft tissue surgeries such as gingivectomy and frenectomy due to their high water absorption, which allows for precise cutting with minimal damage. They also enhance e

A variety of systemic drugs can lead to adverse effects in the oral environment. This article reports the case of a 61-year-old man who had a severe drug-induced gingival overgrowth (DIGO) caused by nifedipine. DIGO is relevant due to severe gingival enlargement, which causes disfigurement and blocks physiological and social functions such as mastication and speaking. Management of DIGO is always a challenge due to the patient's systemic condition. This article shows, step-by-step, how the treatment was executed and how the DIGO was reversed.

BACKGROUND: The palatal area has been the major donor site for obtaining connective tissue for root-coverage procedures. This study evaluated the long-term outcome of using a gingival cuff from the maxillary tuberosity area as a donor site for root coverage procedures.
METHODS: Case 1: A 26-year-old female patient complaining of tooth hypersensitivity and gingival recession on the maxillary left canine was treated with root coverage using a pouch technique. A connective tissue graft was obtained from the gingival cuff of the maxillary tuberosity area. An additional gingivectomy was performed

On the basis of wound healing and gingival recession caused by the three procedures, the copper-band retraction method was the most satisfactory. This tentative conclusion is based on the following reasons: 1. Retraction methods must be evaluated relative to the impression procedure and fit of the restoration. The long-range effects of the marginal fit are probably the most important factor for enhancing periodontal health. 2. This study involved only healthy periodontia of adolescent patients. Different healing might be observed in tissues characterized by gingivitis or periodontitis. 3. A br

Gingival enlargement (GE) is an increase in the size of the gingiva. It may be due to inflammation caused by extensive plaque accumulation, intake of drugs, systemic conditions like pregnancy and puberty, systemic diseases such as leukemia or Wegener's granulomatosis, hereditary gingival fibromatosis, and neoplastic or false enlargement. Idiopathic GE is the massive increase in the size of the gingiva with an unknown etiology. It may have a hereditary basis, be linked to physical impairment, or begin with eruption of primary or permanent dentition. It is also referred as gingivomatosis, heredi
