Potential usefulness of noninvasive autonomic monitoring in recognition of arousals in normal healthy children.

INTRODUCTION: Current methods employed for scoring arousals in children may not be sensitive enough. Because arousals are associated with increases in sympathetic tone, measurement of sympathetic activity using noninvasive techniques could provide useful surrogate markers for arousals in children. METHODS: Ten healthy children underwent overnight polysomnographic assessment with simultaneous pulse transit time (PTT) and peripheral arterial tonometry (PAT) measurements. Arousals (electroencephalogram and/or movement) and PTT and PAT events were identified independently, with scorers blinded to

Latent class analysis of sexual health markers among men and women participating in a British probability sample survey.

BACKGROUND: Despite known associations between different aspects of sexual health, it is not clear how patterning of adverse sexual health varies across the general population. A better understanding should contribute towards more effective problem identification, prevention and treatment. We sought to identify different clusters of sexual health markers in a general population, along with their socio-demographic, health and lifestyle correlates. METHODS: Data came from men (N = 5113) and women (N = 7019) aged 16-74 who reported partnered sexual activity in the past year in Britain's third Na

Health utility values for patients with recurrent acute rhinosinusitis undergoing endoscopic sinus surgery: a nested case control study.

BACKGROUND: Health utility scores quantify an individual's valuation of particular health states and are vital components of health economic studies and cost-effectiveness research. We sought to characterize health utility values for patients with recurrent acute rhinosinusitis (RARS) both before and after endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS), as well as compare health utility to chronic rhinosinusitis without nasal polyposis (CRSsNP). METHODS: Patients with RARS (n = 20) and CRSsNP (n = 20) undergoing ESS were enrolled as part of a longitudinal, observational, prospective cohort. Case patients dia

A conceptual disease model for adult Pompe disease.

BACKGROUND: Studies in orphan diseases are, by nature, confronted with small patient populations, meaning that randomized controlled trials will have limited statistical power. In order to estimate the effectiveness of treatments in orphan diseases and extrapolate effects into the future, alternative models might be needed. The purpose of this study is to develop a conceptual disease model for Pompe disease in adults (an orphan disease). This conceptual model describes the associations between the most important levels of health concepts for Pompe disease in adults, from biological parameters

Anthropometric Reference Data for Children and Adults: United States, 2011-2014.

Anthropometry or human body measurements provide important indicators of nutritional status in children and adults (1). In children, measurements reflect general health status, dietary adequacy, and growth and development over time. In adults, body measurements are used to evaluate health and dietary status, disease risk, and body composition. This report presents anthropometric reference data for 2011-2014 for U.S. children and adults.

Recurrent binge eating with and without the "undue influence of weight or shape on self-evaluation": implications for the diagnosis of binge eating disorder.

Levels of eating disorder psychopathology, impairment in psycho-social functioning and use of health services were compared among probable cases of binge eating disorder (BED) with and without extreme weight or shape concerns ("undue influence of weight or shape on self-evaluation") recruited from a large community sample of women. Data for obese non-binge eaters (n=457), also recruited from the community sample, and for a clinical sample of eating disorder patients (n=128), recruited separately, were included for comparative purposes. BED cases who reported extreme weight or shape concerns (n

Systolic function as a predictor of mortality and quality of life in long-term survivors with heart failure.

BACKGROUND: Patients with heart failure (HF) and preserved ejection fraction (EF) have been shown to have high mortality rates, comparable to those with reduced EF. Thus, long-term survivors of HF, regardless of ejection fraction, are a select group. Little is known about disease-related quality of life (QOL) and health status in these patients. HYPOTHESIS: Preserved EF in patients with heart failure independently predicts long-term survival, health related quality of life (QOL), or functional status. METHODS: The study followed a cohort of 413 patients consecutively hospitalized for HF betw

The Feasibility and Relevance of Collecting Adolescent Health Indicators in Humanitarian Settings: Results From the West Bank.

BACKGROUND: There is a critical concern for adolescent health in the Eastern Mediterranean region especially during humanitarian crises. This study emphasises not only the need for measuring key health indicators but also how to collect the information effectively, particularly in the West Bank. These efforts will guide evidence-based policies and interventions for this population. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: This mixed-methods study aimed to determine the perceived relevance and feasibility of collecting a set of adolescent health indicators in the West Bank. Stakeholders filled out a question

Role of ideal cardiovascular health metrics in reducing risk of incident arrhythmias.

AIMS: Cardiovascular health (CVH) has been proven to reduce cardiovascular disease burden and mortality, but data are lacking regarding cardiac arrhythmias. The aim of this study was to assess the association between CVH metrics and atrial fibrillation/flutter (AF), ventricular arrhythmias, and bradyarrhythmias. METHODS AND RESULTS: This study analysed data from the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) cohort, with participants recruited from four different communities across the United States. Cardiovascular health metrics were scored at baseline (1987-89) following the American Heart

Place effects on health: how can we conceptualise, operationalise and measure them?

In this paper we highlight what we consider to be a lack of adequate conceptualisation. operationalisation and measurement of "place effects". We briefly review recent historical trends in the study of the effects of place on health in industrial countries, and argue that "place effects" often appear to have the status of a residual category, an unspecified black box of somewhat mystical influences on health which remain after investigators have controlled for a range of individual and place characteristics. We note that the distinction between "composition" and "context" may be more apparent

Outcome evaluation in patients with elbow pathology: issues in instrument development and evaluation.

Measurement of outcome after treatment of elbow pathology has tended to rely on nonstandardized scales and isolated impairment measures, particularly range of motion. This study evaluated the reliability and validity of patient questionnaires with patients with elbow pathology. Patients with a variety of complaints affecting the elbow (n = 70) completed four questionnaires-the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons Elbow Form; the Patient-rated Elbow Evaluation; the Disabilities of Arm, Shoulder and Hand questionnaire; and Short Form 36--during clinic attendance and returned repeat questionnaire
