Zolpidem poisoning in a cat.

Zolpidem (Stilnox) is a non-benzodiazepine hypnotic drug of the imidazopyridine class intended for treatment of insomnia in humans. A 16-year-old neutered cat, weighing 3.8 kg, was presented with sudden onset of stupor, disorientation, severe ataxia, vomiting and hypersalivation. Symptomatic treatment was given when ingestion of 1.25 mg/kg zolpidem (half of a 10-mg tablet) was confirmed, because no information on the efficacy and safety of the use of flumazenil in the treatment of zolpidem poisoning in cats has been published to date. As zolpidem is prescribed with increasing frequency in huma

Experimental toxocariasis and hyperactivity in mice.

An observational study using videorecordings and computer-assisted data analysis was undertaken in order to investigate the behaviour of mice infected with larvae of Toxocara canis. The findings indicated that the infection had a marked effect on five readily and reliably differentiable categories of murine behaviour. A marked increase in the number of shorter bouts of each of the five behaviours was also associated with the infection. These results support previous findings and further suggest that T. canis infection affects the way in which mice respond to their environment. In particular th

Facial myokymia and brain stem tumor.

An autoptic case of facial myokymia in glioma of the pons is described. The facial myokymia was the only symptom for many years. The authors emphasize the importance of the facial myokymia as a precocious sign of pons tumor and stress the meaning of the EMG in the differential diagnosis between facial myokymia in brain stem tumor and facial hyperkinesa in other diseases.

Investigating the molecular mechanisms of delirium-like neuropsychiatric disorder induced by electromagnetic pulse based on bioinformatics analysis.

Electromagnetic pulse (EMP), a unique type of electromagnetic radiation, may induce diverse neuropsychiatric disorders, such as irritability, hyperkinesis, retardation of learning and memory. However, the underlying mechanism of EMP exposure on neuronal injury has not been elucidated. Here, we aimed to delineate the regulatory expression networks based on high-throughput sequencing data to explore the possible molecular mechanisms related to EMP-induced delirium-like neuropsychiatric disorder in rats. It's shown that EMP exposure induced anxiety, cognitive decline and short-term memory impairm

The use of botulinum toxin to improve cosmesis in patients with facial asymmetry following facial palsy/synkinesis - A literature review.

Facial palsy (FP) is a common debilitating condition with many etiologies. FP causes unilateral paralysis, functional impairments, and asymmetry, reducing aesthetics overall. Secondary complications such as hyperkinesis or synkinesis can result in reduced quality of life (QoL), including social isolation and deteriorating mental health. Treatments, including botulinum toxin injections, aim to correct this asymmetry. This review assessed the efficacy, safety, and cost effectiveness of botulinum for enhancing facial symmetry in FP. A PubMed search was conducted for studies from 2010 to 2023. Stu

Insights into RNA-mediated pathology in new mouse models of Huntington's disease.

Huntington's disease (HD) is a neurodegenerative polyglutamine (polyQ) disease resulting from the expansion of CAG repeats located in the ORF of the huntingtin gene (HTT). The extent to which mutant mRNA-driven disruptions contribute to HD pathogenesis, particularly in comparison to the dominant mechanisms related to the gain-of-function effects of the mutant polyQ protein, is still debatable. To evaluate this contribution in vivo, we generated two mouse models through a knock-in strategy at the Rosa26 locus. These models expressed distinct variants of human mutant HTT cDNA fragment: a transla

Takotsubo cardiomyopathy associated with Guillain-Barré syndrome: a differential diagnosis from dysautonomia not to be missed.

A 60-year-old woman presented with a 1-week progressive limb weakness and an areflexic tetraparesis. Both neurophysiological and cerebrospinal fluid examinations were consistent with diagnosis of Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) and a treatment by intravenous immunoglobulin over a 5-day period was started. At the end of the treatment, the patient suffered from an acute coronary syndrome (ACS) without stenosis at coronary arteriography. Left ventriculography showed segmental wall motion abnormalities with apical akinesis contrasting with hyperkinesis in basal segments, with a depressed left ventri

Line-item analysis of the Aberrant Behavior Checklist: results from two studies of aripiprazole in the treatment of irritability associated with autistic disorder.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of aripiprazole in the treatment of discrete symptoms of irritability associated with autistic disorder, as well as other symptoms captured on the Aberrant Behavior Checklist (ABC). METHODS: This was a post hoc analysis of data from two 8-week, randomized, double-blind, multicenter trials to evaluate the efficacy of aripiprazole dosed flexibly (2-15 mg/day, n=47) or fixed (5, 10, or 15 mg/day, n = 166) versus placebo (flexibly dosed, n = 51; fixed dose, n = 52). The effects of treatment on the 58 ABC items were evaluated. RESULTS

Catatonia and the neuroleptics: psychobiologic significance of remote and recent findings.

The previously common occurrence of catatonic schizophrenia and catatonic symptoms among schizophrenic patients has diminished sharply; catatonic symptoms now occur more frequently in association with severe affective disorders or with general medical conditions. Catatonia is generally viewed as a peculiar and puzzling syndrome and attracts limited attention. Yet significant catatonic symptoms tend to be present in close to 10% of patients admitted to psychiatric inpatient facilities. The dynamic significance of catatonia can be recognized by considering the original biologic role of catatonia

Regional alterations in myocardial sympathetic innervation in patients with transient left-ventricular apical ballooning (Tako-Tsubo cardiomyopathy).

BACKGROUND: Excess sympathetic nervous activity was proposed to play a crucial role in the pathogenesis of transient left-ventricular apical ballooning (TLVAB, also known as Tako-Tsubo cardiomyopathy). This study was conducted to assess presynaptic adrenergic alterations in the dysfunctional myocardium of patients with TLVAB. METHODS AND RESULTS: Ten consecutive patients undergoing coronary angiography for acute coronary syndrome who fulfilled the proposed Mayo Clinic criteria for the diagnosis of TLVAB were investigated. Hyperkinetic Movement Disorder Caused by the Recurrent c.892C>T NACC1 Variant.

BACKGROUND: Genetic syndromes of hyperkinetic movement disorders associated with epileptic encephalopathy and intellectual disability are becoming increasingly recognized. Recently, a de novo heterozygous NACC1 (nucleus accumbens-associated 1) missense variant was described in a patient cohort including one patient with a combined mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) deficiency. OBJECTIVES: The objective is to characterize the movement disorder in affected patients with the recurrent c.892C>T NACC1 variant and study the NACC1 protein and mitochondrial function at the cellular leve

[Gastrointestinal disorders in hyperkinetic movement disorders and ataxia].

Disorders of the gastrointestinal tract in patients suffering from hypokinetic movement disorders, and in particular Parkinson's disease, have increasingly been the subject of more intensive neuromedical research. So far, few data are available for patients with hyperkinetic movement disorders and ataxias. This review article summarizes the currently available and relevant publications on this topic. The particular focus is on essential tremor, restless legs syndrome, Huntington's disease and the group of hereditary ataxias. Further intensive research will be necessary in the future to collect

DHDDS-related disease; biallelic missense novel variant causing major severity with an early-onset epilepsy and hyperkinetic movement disorder.

BACKGROUND: Dehydrodolichyl diphosphate synthase complex is encoded by DHDDS. De novo mutations in this gene are associated with epilepsy, movement disorders, intellectual and motor disabilities. The clinical picture is commonly identified in children and shows variations in terms of age of onset, severity, seizure types, and types of dyskinesia. CASE: we present a case with a infantile- onset epilepsy and severe global developmental delay, caused by a novel, de novo homozygous variant (c.425C > T, p.Thr142Met) in DHDDS. Clinical improvement was achieved with valproate and tetrabenazine treat

Social cognition in hyperkinetic movement disorders: a systematic review.

Numerous lines of research indicate that our social brain involves a network of cortical and subcortical brain regions that are responsible for sensing and controlling body movements. However, it remains unclear whether movement disorders have a systematic impact on social cognition. To address this question, we conducted a systematic review examining the influence of hyperkinetic movement disorders (including Huntington disease, Tourette syndrome, dystonia, and essential tremor) on social cognition. Following the PRISMA guidelines and registering the protocol in the PROSPERO database (CRD4202
