Visual impairment is a global public health priority because of its high prevalence and impact on quality of life. In Latin America, access to ophthalmologic care is limited by multiple barriers that especially affect vulnerable populations and hinder the timely detection and management of preventable visual diseases. This scoping review aimed to describe the available evidence on the barriers affecting access to ophthalmology services in Latin America. In accordance with the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) and the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses-Scoping Review

BACKGROUND: Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) and myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein antibody-associated disease (MOGAD) are rare autoimmune disorders of the central nervous system whose diagnosis increasingly relies on highly sensitive antibody assays and timely access to targeted therapies. Despite major advances in the diagnosis and management of these disorders worldwide, substantial challenges continue to compromise patient care across Latin America (LATAM).
METHODS: This consensus-informed regional perspective was developed as an initiative of the European Charcot Foundati

Plasmodium falciparum with deletions in the pfhrp2 and pfhrp3 genes has increasingly challenged national malaria control efforts worldwide by reducing the reliability of HRP2-based rapid diagnostic tests. This review explores available reports and evidence on this issue across Latin America. The results show a varied distribution, with countries such as Peru, Colombia, and Brazil reporting the emergence and spread of multidrug-resistant strains. Meanwhile, Caribbean countries and parts of Central America report low prevalence or no deletions. Understanding these patterns is essential for adjus

BACKGROUND: Age and sex are known risk factors for Parkinson's Disease (PD), but it remains controversial if there are sex differences in the diagnosis latency. The objective of this study was to examine these sex differences in Latin America.
METHODS: The Latin American Research Consortium on the Genetics of PD (LARGE-PD) includes PD patients from countries across Latin America who were diagnosed using the UK Brain Bank criteria. Ages at onset (AAO; N = 2,792), diagnosis (AAD; N = 1,416), and calculated diagnosis latency (N = 1,416) were extracted from the LARGE-PD database and compared for

Latin America faces a critical neurosurgical workforce shortage, with an estimated deficit of 924 neurosurgeons and nearly 40% of the populatio living more than two hours from neurosurgical care. Access is concentrated in urban centers, while rural and underserved communities remain disproportionately affected. Training opportunities are inconsistent, with a lack of standardized curricula and limited regional accreditation mechanisms, further exacerbating inequities. Progress has been hindered by fragmented data collection, inadequate policy coordination, and unequal resource distribution. Des

Generalized anxiety has significantly increased in the general population during and after the COVID-19 pandemic, highlighting the need for rapid screening tools. In this context, the present study analyzed the psychometric properties and internal consistency of the Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale (GAD-7) in healthcare workers and the general population in Latin America. A cross-sectional e-health study was conducted, surveying 11,279 Latin Americans online using snowball sampling. The sample included healthcare professionals, hospital populations, community members from various occupations

This viewpoint challenges the notion that Latin America is on the verge of an opioid use disorder crisis similar to that occurring in the USA and Canada. We critically analyse the evidence presented by León and colleagues, who argues that opioid prescribing patterns in countries such as Chile reflect an alarming expansion of misuse, especially in the context of chronic non-cancer pain. While acknowledging the growing availability of opioids in Latin America, we contend that this trend primarily reflects efforts to expand palliative care and rational opioid access for serious health-related suf

Vitiligo is a common chronic autoimmune disorder characterized by skin and hair depigmentation that affects 0.5%-2.0% of the global population. Vitiligo is associated with diminished quality of life (QoL) and psychosocial burden. The burden of vitiligo may vary based on skin tone and cultural differences as well as geographical variations in disease awareness, societal stigma, healthcare systems and treatment options. Data on the burden and management of vitiligo in Africa, the Middle East and Latin America are scarce. Literature searches using terms covering vitiligo in Africa, the Middle Eas

The Royal Philanthropic Vaccine Expedition is considered in the history of medicine as the first international health expedition aimed at the global elimination of a contagious disease: smallpox. However, the initiatives carried out in this way before the arrival of the Balmis Expedition, by surgeons from the Spanish Navy, are less well known. Thus, the main objective of this research work is to offer an overview of the different anti-variolic vaccination initiatives prior to the campaign financed by the Spanish crown from these health facilities. This study analysed Strongyloides stercoralis genetic variability based on a 404 bp region of the cox1 gene from Latin-American samples in a clinical context including epidemiological, diagnosis and follow-up variables. A prospective, descriptive, observational study was conducted to evaluate clinical and parasitological evolution after ivermectin treatment of 41 patients infected with S. stercoralis. Reactivation of the disease was defined both by clinical symptoms appearance and/or direct larvae detection 30 days after treatment or later. We described 10 haplotypes organized in two clusters.

The World Health Organization, the World Organization for Animal Health, and the Food and Agriculture Organization have resolved to eliminate human rabies deaths due to dog bites by 2030, and the Vaccine Alliance (Gavi) has added human rabies vaccines to their investments for 2021-2025. Implementing these goals cost-effectively and sustainably requires understanding the complex connections between dog rabies vaccination and human risk and response. The objective of this paper is to estimate how dog rabies vaccinations affect human rabies deaths, mediated through dog rabies cases, dog bite repo

The mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS) constitutes a heterogeneous group of rare genetic disorders caused by enzymatic deficiencies that lead to the accumulation of glycosaminoglycans. Several types of MPS are described, historically numbered from I to IX. Clinical observations strongly suggest the presence of chronic pain in patients with all types of MPS. There are few data in the literature on the evaluation and management of pain in these patients, a fact that can compromise the quality of life even more. Professionals with extensive experience in the care for patients with MPS held a meeting in

Globally, female sterilization is one of the most popular contraceptive methods despite concerns about quality of care for women who report being sterilized. In this study, informed choice among sterilized women was quantified using Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) data from 2000 to 2012 for countries in South Asia and Latin America. Three responses measured informed choice and knowledge about whether women were informed by a health worker or provider: that sterilization is permanent, the potential side-effects of sterilization and other methods of contraception. An ascending composite Meth
