[Current status of vaccination and antibiotic prophylaxis in splenectomy. II: Children].

Children are exposed to a greater risk than adults for severe late postsplenectomy infection. Therefore, prophylaxis against bacterial infections need to be more extensive. This paper presents a protocol for preventive measures in children. Repeated education of the patient and his/her parents about the consequences of splenic loss is mandatory. Vaccinations against Streptococcus pneumoniae and Hemophilus influenzae are highly recommended and also against Neisseria meningitidis in certain situations. The importance of long-term antibiotic prophylaxis in children is emphasized. Recent advances

[Mumps in Poland in 2005].

In 2005, 71,945 cases of mumps were reported in Poland. The incidence (188.5 per 100,000) was lower compared to 2004 (354.1), when the highest mumps incidence was recorded since 1999. The recently observed improvement in the epidemiological situation of mumps (trend towards lower and less frequent epidemic peaks) reflect the use of measles-mumps-rubella vaccine which was increasingly acquired by parents at their own expense during the last decade. Mandatory, free of charge, vaccination of children aged 13-14 months with trivalent measles-mumps-rubella vaccine was implemented at the end of 2003

[Not Available].

The German Protection against Infection Act (Infektionsschutzgesetz) came into action on January 1, 2001. Reporting of complications after vaccination became mandatory according to Article 6 No. 3. From January 1, 2001 to October 19, 2001 a total of 236 reports were registered in a central database and analyzed. Age distribution revealed the following pattern: 44.1% of the notifications concerned children from 0 to 11 years of age, 6.8% concerned adolescents and 48.7% concerned adults. Two deaths and nine lasting health damages were reported. For none of the latter adverse events a causal link

Vaccination policies in the military: an insight on influenza.

Influenza, despite its generally benign clinical course, is accompanied by absenteeism from work, acute suffering and even mortality, mainly in the elderly and in subjects who have high-risk medical conditions. Its prevention consists of strain specific vaccination, which must be repeated annually due to the high antigenic variability of the influenza virus. Influenza may represent an important obstacle to military readiness, particularly when considering its infectivity within closed communities. Despite such epidemiological situations, influenza vaccination is seldom included in the compulso

Determinants of adherence to seasonal influenza vaccination among healthcare workers from an Italian region: results from a cross-sectional study.

OBJECTIVES: Notwithstanding decades of efforts to increase the uptake of seasonal influenza (flu) vaccination among European healthcare workers (HCWs), the immunisation rates are still unsatisfactory. In order to understand the reasons for the low adherence to flu vaccination, a study was carried out among HCWs of two healthcare organisations in Liguria, a region in northwest Italy. METHODS: A cross-sectional study based on anonymous self-administered web questionnaires was carried out between October 2013 and February 2014. Through univariate and multivariate regression analysis, the study i

The impact of personal coaching on influenza vaccination among healthcare workers before and during COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: Without the implementation of mandatory vaccination, it was difficult to increase the influenza vaccination rate among healthcare workers. We described the strategy of personal coaching and assess its impact in increasing the influenza vaccination rate among healthcare workers in Hong Kong. METHODS: Personal coaching of individual staff led by the infection control officer (ICO) and senior nursing officer (SNO) from infection control team could overcome barriers and promote on-site vaccination. The influenza vaccination rates among different categories of staff in 2016/2017 (year

Study on the Refusal of Vaccination against COVID-19 in Romania.

The refusal to be inoculated with the anti-COVID-19 vaccine by a part of the Romanian population becomes a barrier against controlling and stopping this particularly infectious virus. The rapid evolution of COVID-19 vaccines has created confusion regarding health and safety. Many Romanian citizens refuse vaccination because of fears generated by uncertainties based on information obtained from fake news. At the present moment, January 2022, Romania has one of the lowest vaccination rates in the European Union, below 45% of the total population. In our study, we want to identify the determining

Compulsory and recommended vaccination in Italy: evaluation of coverage and non-compliance between 1998-2002 in Northern Italy.

BACKGROUND: Since vaccinations are an effective prevention tool for maintaining the health of society, the monitoring of immunization coverage allows us to identify areas where disease outbreaks are likely to occur, and possibly assist us in predicting future outbreaks. The aim of this study is the investigation of the coverage achieved for compulsory (diphtheria, tetanus, polio, hepatitis B,) and recommended (pertussis, Haemophilus influenzae, measles-mumps-rubella) vaccinations between 1998 and 2002 in the municipality of Bologna and the identification of the subjects not complying with comp

Q fever outbreak in the terraced vineyards of Lavaux, Switzerland.

Coxiella burnetii infection (Q fever) is a widespread zoonosis with low endemicity in Switzerland, therefore no mandatory public report was required. A cluster of initially ten human cases of acute Q fever infections characterized by prolonged fever, asthenia and mild hepatitis occurred in 2012 in the terraced vineyard of Lavaux. Epidemiological investigations based on patients' interviews and veterinary investigations included environmental sampling as well as Coxiella-specific serological assay and molecular examinations (real-time PCR in vaginal secretions) of suspected sheep. These investi

Evaluation of serological cross-reactivity between yellow fever and other flaviviruses.

OBJECTIVES: This study was performed to determine whether neutralizing antibodies against yellow fever virus (YFV) generated by YFV vaccine could interfere in the specificity of dengue virus (DENV) and Zika virus (ZIKV) IgG ELISA tests. METHODS: Seventy-nine pairs of serum samples (pre- and post-vaccination), collected during the years 1997-1998 from children with no history of yellow fever disease who had been vaccinated against YFV, were tested. The seroconversion post-vaccination was evaluated through plaque reduction neutralization test (PRNT), and four different commercial ELISA kits wer

Impact of universal vaccination on the epidemiology of varicella in Veneto, Italy.

In 2005, universal varicella vaccination was introduced in the Veneto region, Italy. We examined trends in varicella incidence and hospitalization rates before and after vaccine introduction, and applied statistical models to assess vaccine effectiveness. Varicella incidence rates for 2000-2008 were calculated from the mandatory regional surveillance data and from a special surveillance system based on reports from a sample of family pediatricians that during the study period followed more than 40,000 children. To evaluate hospital admission rates, we analyzed the regional hospital discharge r

COVID-19 Vaccination Attitude and Behavior among Nurses at a West Texas Regional Hospital.

Vaccinations against COVID-19 infection have become a contentious issue in the United States. Multiple segments of society, including healthcare workers, have expressed concerns regarding the need for vaccination and the safety of current vaccines. Many hospital-based nurses have helped care for patients with severe COVID-19 infections. An anonymous online survey was sent to the nursing staff at University Medical Center in Lubbock, TX, USA, through a hospital-based email system to determine vaccination status and attitudes towards the COVID-19 vaccine and other routine vaccines. Multivariable

Exploring the relationship between newspaper coverage of vaccines and childhood vaccination rates in Spain.

Background: Despite the effectiveness of vaccines being well established and recognized by the research community, eleven European countries have adopted mandatory vaccination programs because of vaccine hesitancy. Lack of information and fake news are considered the main reasons. The media are a powerful tool for spreading vaccine-related information. The study of media effects on vaccine uptake has received little attention in Europe. Objective: To explore the association of childhood vaccination rates in Spain with vaccine-related coverage in print media. Methods: A content analysis of newspa

Mitigating the risk of invasive meningococcal disease in the umrah setting: Epidemiology, surveillance, and vaccination strategies.

Invasive meningococcal disease remains a public health challenge during the year-round Umrah pilgrimage to Makkah, Saudi Arabia. Although the MenACWY vaccination is mandatory, imported cases still occur. We reviewed surveillance findings from the Ramadan 2025 season, including confirmed cases, vaccination activities, carriage screening, and genomic data. The confirmed disease occurred in unvaccinated international pilgrims from Sri Lanka, India, and Indonesia, and serogroup W was identified in the sequenced samples. All patients recovered and no local transmission was observed. National campai

Incremental effectiveness of 2 doses of measles-containing vaccine compared with 1 dose among high school students during an outbreak.

A measles outbreak occurred among a highly vaccinated population in Alaska during 1998, providing an opportunity to determine the incremental efficacy of >or=2 doses of measles-containing vaccine (MCV) compared with 1 dose. Of 33 confirmed case patients identified, 31 had been vaccinated with 1 dose of MCV, 1 had received 2 doses, and vaccination status was unknown in 1 case. Seventy percent of cases were school-associated; 58% of cases occurred in 2 high schools. Of 3679 students attending the 2 schools, 50.4% and 45.5% had received >or=2 doses of MCV before measles introduction at the school

[Polio vaccination today: critical remarks].

Vaccination against poliomyelitis remains an absolutely mandatory measure to prevent resurgence of this dreadful viral infection. Today, however, when the chance to get infected is extremely low, one has to reconsider much more the inherent risk of such a living vaccine which is principally able to induce neurologic disease especially in immunocompromised host the number of which is increasing in our population. Since these attenuated vaccine strains multiply largely in the orointestinal tract of a vaccine, those viruses are shed and easily spread into surroundings so that other persons which

Human papillomavirus and vaccination.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is the most common sexually transmitted infection in the United States. Modeling estimates suggest that more than 80% of sexually active women will have acquired genital HPV by age 50 years. Although most infections are transient and asymptomatic, persistent infection with high-risk types of HPV can lead to precancerous lesions and progress to cancer. In June 2006, the US Food and Drug Administration licensed the first vaccine to prevent cervical cancers and other diseases in women. This quadrivalent vaccine protects against HPV-6, HPV-11, HPV-16, and HPV-1

[Mumps in Poland in 2002].

In 2002, 39,978 cases of mumps were reported in Poland. The incidence (104.6 per 100,000) was higher then in 2001 (43.3), which corresponds to a periodical increase of mumps incidence occurring in Poland every 3-4 years. This year's peak is much lower than the previous ones, which can be attributed to the growing vaccine coverage. Even though the mumps vaccine was not included into the national immunization program, the coverage in the 3-year old children reached in 2002 35.5%. Approximately 3.5% of cases were hospitalized (1400) and no mumps deaths were reported. Children 5-9 years old consti
