Current Status of Stem Cell Therapies in Tissue Repair and Regeneration.

Tissue engineering is a multi-disciplinary field such as material science, life science, and bioengineering that are necessary to make artificial tissue or rejuvenate damaged tissue. Numerous tissue repair techniques and substitute now exist even though it has several shortcomings; these shortcomings give a good reason for the continuous research for more acceptable tissue-engineered substitutes. The search for and use of a suitable stem cell in tissue engineering is a promising concept. Stem cells have a distinctive capability to differentiate and self-renew that make more suitable for cell-b

Astigmatic Displacement Microscopy (ADM) with Subnanometer Axial Resolution for Three-Dimensional (3D) Morphological Characterization.

In response to the growing demand for advanced micro/nano characterization in materials and surface-interface sciences, we report a highly sensitive astigmatism displacement microscopy (ADM) system with subnanometer axial resolution of 0.1 nm. This low-power, noncontact, nondestructive, and rapid optical 3D imaging technique enables large-area characterization with exceptional imaging quality. Using ADM, we achieved high-quality 3D morphology characterization of Au nanoplates, CD-ROMs, semiconductor Si wafers, and few-layer 2D materials (like MoS2). For few-layer 2D materials, ADM demonstrates

Material Realization of Spinless, Covalent-Type Dirac Semimetals in Three Dimensions.

Realization of a three-dimensional (3D) analog of graphene has been a central challenge in topological materials science. Graphene is stabilized by covalent bonding, unlike conventional spin-orbit-type 3D Dirac semimetals (DSMs). In this study, we demonstrate the material realization of covalent-type 3D DSMs R_{8}CoX_{3} stabilized by covalent bonding. We confirm the clean Dirac semimetal state in Y_{8}CoIn_{3} by combined thermodynamic and transport experiments. We also realize high carrier mobility exceeding 3000  cm^{2}/Vs even in polycrystalline samples of R_{8}CoX_{3}. Our research provid

Encoded Cell-Material Interactions to Reroute Cytokine Signaling for Regenerative Medicine.

Regenerative engineering harnesses materials science and stem cell biology to develop strategies to repair damaged and diseased tissue. Despite advances in designer materials, few techniques effectively provide auto-regulated feedback mechanisms that govern how cells sense and respond to discrete microenvironmental changes. Here, we demonstrate that the artificial, juxtacrine-like receptor synthetic Notch (synNotch) can be activated by endogenous multimeric cytokines in solution, without immobilizing materials, revealing a previously unreported activation modality and yielding up to 24-fold dy

Nanoarchitectonics of molecular machines, biomolecular machines, and microrobots in their collective behaviour.

Nanoarchitectonics of small-scale molecular units into functional materials is a key strategy in materials science. The central challenge lies in assembling, integrating, and nanoarchitecting fundamental functional units, such as molecular machines and microrobots, to innovate materials. This review examines collective behaviours typical in molecular and biomolecular machines and microrobots. We categorize collective behaviours into six types: (i) small-scale units operating cooperatively or collaboratively (often seen in macroscopic objects such as crystals); (ii) free-moving units in the bul

Recent advances in ROS-modulating materials for sepsis treatment.

Sepsis is a life-threatening systemic inflammatory response syndrome caused by uncontrolled immune reactions to infection. During its onset, immune cells produce reactive oxygen species (ROS) as critical signaling mediators to activate immune responses and coordinate antimicrobial defense. Moderate ROS level is essential for immune activation, whereas its excessive accumulation disrupts redox homeostasis, induces oxidative injury, and accelerates multi-organ failure. Advances in material science and nanotechnology have enabled the development of ROS-modulating materials that regulate oxidative

Artificial Intelligence-Assisted Workflow for Transmission Electron Microscopy: From Data Analysis Automation to Materials Knowledge Unveiling.

(Scanning) transmission electron microscopy ((S)TEM) has significantly advanced materials science but faces challenges in correlating precise atomic structure information with the functional properties of devices due to its time-intensive nature. To address this, an analytical workflow is introduced for the holistic characterization, modelling, and simulation of device heterostructures. This workflow automates the experimental (S)TEM data analysis, providing an in-depth characterization of crystallographic information, 3D orientation, elemental composition, and strain distribution. It reduces

Microstructured Fibers for the Production of Food.

Food engineering faces the difficult challenge of combining taste, i.e., tailoring texture and rheology of food matrices with the balanced intake of healthy nutrients. In materials science, fiber suspensions and composites have been developed as a versatile and successful approach to tailor rheology while imparting materials with added functionalities. Structures based on such types of physical (micro)fibers are however rare in food production mainly due to a lack of food-grade materials and processes allowing for the fabrication of fibers with controlled sizes and microstructures. Here, the c

Antibacterial activity of nanocomposites of copper and cellulose.

The design of cheap and safe antibacterial materials for widespread use has been a challenge in materials science. The use of copper nanostructures combined with abundant biopolymers such as cellulose offers a potential approach to achieve such materials though this has been less investigated as compared to other composites. Here, nanocomposites comprising copper nanofillers in cellulose matrices have been prepared by in situ and ex situ methods. Two cellulose matrices (vegetable and bacterial) were investigated together with morphological distinct copper particulates (nanoparticles and nanowi
