Angiography-Derived Physiology for Coronary Artery Disease Assessment: Expert Opinion From a SCAI Roundtable.

Angiography-derived physiology (ADP) is an emerging technique that offers streamlined, wire-free assessment of epicardial coronary physiology. This is accomplished by applying computational fluid dynamics or, in some cases, mathematical formulas in conjunction with artificial intelligence to standard coronary angiographic images. This approach represents a potential paradigm shift in the catheterization laboratory workflow. Despite its early promise, obstacles to the adoption and routine use of ADP remain. This document represents expert opinion from a scientific roundtable on ADP for coronary

New Game-Theoretical Approach to Marketing Cooperatives in Fisheries.

While most game-theoretical models in fisheries deal with the conflict of exploitation of the same resource, unlike these models, the present paper is dedicated to marketing conflicts, always accounting for the underlying population dynamics. In the context of marketing cooperatives in fisheries, three models are combined: the classical fishing effort model based on logistic population dynamics, a game-theoretical model of the conflict between a marketing cooperative and its members, and a Cournot-type oligopoly market model. The latter, in particular, means that the market price is determined

Disorder and Homeostasis in ANIBOT A Biologically-Inspired Animal Robot.

The effects of external perturbations (or disorder) in the Hopf bifurcations of a central pattern generator (CPG) network of neurons that serves as a model for the circuit realization of ANIBOT-a biologically-inspired animal robot with four legs-are studied, analytically and computationally, from the standpoint of homeostasis. In particular, we employ recent developments in the mathematical description of homeostasis, e.g., input-output functions, to explore the CPG response to perturbations of the network connectivity, the internal dynamics of the neurons, and electronic noise as it arises in

Mathematical modeling of vasomotion in supplying the nutrients in clogged blood vessels: an analytical approach.

This paper develops a theoretical model to examine the role of vasomotion and its effect on mass transfer processes. Vasomotion, consisting of periodic wave-like oscillations of blood vessel walls, is frequently observed in microcirculation and demonstrates distinct features in arterioles. The advection-diffusion equation governs the mass transport. This analysis can be used to model pathological conditions of blood flow, such as the formation of fatty cholesterol plaques and artery-clogging blood clots within the vessel lumen. These obstructions are modeled as a fictitious porous medium with

Investigating the impact of adipose derived media on ovarian cancer: Insights from a 3D in-silico model.

Ovarian cancer is responsible for the most deaths of all gynaecological cancers in the Western world [1]. The symptoms of ovarian cancer are typically subtle and similar to those associated with other diseases found more prevalently in the population, frequently resulting in late diagnoses and advanced tumour stages upon treatment initiation [2]. While surgery and platinum-based treatments can be curative, ovarian cancers found at the latter, metastasised stages are likely to be recurrent and more tailored towards palliative care [3]. Metastasised ovarian cancer spreads to surrounding organs a

Perceptual grouping, not covert attention, drives the connectedness effect in the ANS.

A robust finding in numerical cognition is that connecting items within an array leads to systematic underestimation of numerosity. This provides evidence that approximate numerosity perception relies on discrete objects rather than on continuous variables (e.g., total area, density, convex hull). While this connectedness effect is often attributed to perceptual grouping, an alternative interpretation is that connected items may capture covert attention, thereby biasing the sampling of visual information. We tested these competing accounts by combining a numerosity estimation task with a targe

Decision-level processes in rapid numerosity estimation.

How do people rapidly judge numerosity-the number of objects in a scene? Theories of human numerical judgements are constrained by the behavioural patterns emerging when people estimate numerosity, such as exact enumeration of small sets, underestimation of large sets, and scalar variability. Current computational models capture how properties of stimulus representations can lead to characteristic behavioural patterns under rapid viewing conditions. Here, we examined which decision-level processes people engage during such tasks, and whether these processes contribute to behavioural patterns.

Coupled Information-Infection Dynamics Produce Information-Driven Shifts in Epidemic Regimes via Competing Vaccine Narratives.

Vaccine-related communication can be harnessed to curb infection; yet, in practice, it often undermines vaccine uptake and sustains transmission even when effective vaccines are available. Our goal is to understand how vaccine information dynamics may shape infection spread within a coupled information-infection modeling framework. We present a coupled information-infection modeling framework that links a standard SVIRS infection-spread model with an integrate-and-fire-inspired information-dissemination model. Vaccine-positive and vaccine-critical active groups disseminate competing informatio

Stability and bifurcation of Mpox transmission model with population heterogeneity and booster vaccination.

In this paper, we consider a novel mpox virus transmission model with human interactions, hospitalization rates, vaccination coverage (single-dose and two-dose), and vaccine efficacy, where the susceptible individuals are divided into low-risk and high-risk groups, and infected individuals are divided into asymptomatic and symptomatic groups. First, the existence, uniqueness, and continuous dependence on initial conditions, as well as the positivity and boundedness of solutions, are investigated. Then, the existence and local stability of all equilibria, the basic reproduction number, and forw

Single-cell 3D genome reconstruction in the haploid setting using rigidity theory.

This article considers the problem of 3-dimensional genome reconstruction for single-cell data, and the uniqueness of such reconstructions in the setting of haploid organisms. We consider multiple graph models as representations of this problem, and use techniques from graph rigidity theory to determine identifiability. Biologically, our models come from Hi-C data, microscopy data, and combinations thereof. Mathematically, we use unit ball and sphere packing models, as well as models consisting of distance and inequality constraints. In each setting, we describe and/or derive new results on re

Bayesian estimation of transmission networks for infectious diseases.

Reconstructing transmission networks is essential for identifying key factors like superspreaders and high-risk locations, which are critical for developing effective pandemic prevention strategies. This study presents a Bayesian transmission model that combines genomic and temporal data to reconstruct transmission networks for infectious diseases. The Bayesian transmission model incorporates the latent period and distinguishes between symptom onset and actual infection time, improving the accuracy of transmission dynamics and epidemiological models. It also assumes a homogeneous effective pop

Age-Related Changes to the Immune System Exacerbate the Inflammatory Response to Pandemic H1N1 Infection.

Age-induced dysregulation of the immune response is a major contributor to the morbidity and mortality related to influenza a virus infections. Experimental data have shown substantial changes to the activation and maintenance of the immune response will occur with age, but it remains unclear which of these many interrelated changes are most critical to controlling the survival of the host during infection. To ascertain which mechanisms are predominantly responsible for the increased morbidity in elderly hosts, we developed an ordinary differential equation model to simulate the immune respons

Analysis of War and Conflict Effect on the Transmission Dynamics of the Tenth Ebola Outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The tenth Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) that occurred from 2018 to 2020 was exacerbated by long-lasting conflicts and war in the region. We propose a deterministic model to investigate the impact of such disruptive events on the transmission dynamics of the Ebola virus disease. It is an extension of the classical susceptible-infectious-recovered model, enriched by an additional class of contaminated environment to account for indirect transmission as well as two classes of hospitalized individuals and patients who escape from the healthcare facility due to violence a

Fluency in symbolic arithmetic refines the approximate number system in parietal cortex.

The objective of this study was to investigate, using a brain measure of approximate number system (ANS) acuity, whether the precision of the ANS is crucial for the development of symbolic numerical abilities (i.e., scaffolding hypothesis) and/or whether the experience with symbolic number processing refines the ANS (i.e., refinement hypothesis). To this aim, 38 children solved a dot comparison task inside the scanner when they were approximately 10-years old (Time 1) and once again approximately 2 years later (Time 2). To study the scaffolding hypothesis, a regression analysis was carried out

Constrained minimization problems for the reproduction number in meta-population models.

The basic reproduction number ([Formula: see text]) can be considerably higher in an SIR model with heterogeneous mixing compared to that from a corresponding model with homogeneous mixing. For example, in the case of measles, mumps and rubella in San Diego, CA, Glasser et al. (Lancet Infect Dis 16(5):599-605, 2016. https://doi.org/10.1016/S1473-3099(16)00004-9 ), reported an increase of 70% in [Formula: see text] when heterogeneity was accounted for. Meta-population models with simple heterogeneous mixing functions, e.g., proportionate mixing, have been employed to identify optimal vaccinatio

Common and distinct brain regions in both parietal and frontal cortex support symbolic and nonsymbolic number processing in humans: A functional neuroimaging meta-analysis.

In recent years, there has been substantial growth in neuroimaging studies investigating neural correlates of symbolic (e.g. Arabic numerals) and non-symbolic (e.g. dot arrays) number processing. At present it remains contested whether number is represented abstractly, or if number representations in the brain are format-dependent. In order to quantitatively evaluate the available neuroimaging evidence, we used activation likelihood estimation (ALE) to conduct quantitative meta-analyses of the results reported in 57 neuroimaging papers. Consistent with the existence of an abstract representati

Vector-Borne Pathogen and Host Evolution in a Structured Immuno-Epidemiological System.

Vector-borne disease transmission is a common dissemination mode used by many pathogens to spread in a host population. Similar to directly transmitted diseases, the within-host interaction of a vector-borne pathogen and a host's immune system influences the pathogen's transmission potential between hosts via vectors. Yet there are few theoretical studies on virulence-transmission trade-offs and evolution in vector-borne pathogen-host systems. Here, we consider an immuno-epidemiological model that links the within-host dynamics to between-host circulation of a vector-borne disease. On the immu

Visuospatial referents facilitate the learning and transfer of mathematical operations: extending the role of the angular gyrus.

Different external representations for learning and solving mathematical operations may affect learning and transfer. To explore the effects of learning representations, learners were each introduced to two new operations (b↑n and b↓n) via either formulas or graphical representations. Both groups became adept at solving regular (trained) problems. During transfer, no external formulas or graphs were present; however, graph learners' knowledge could allow them to mentally associate problem expressions with visuospatial referents. The angular gyrus (AG) has recently been hypothesized to map prob

Origins of the specialization for letters and numbers in ventral occipitotemporal cortex.

Deep in the occipitotemporal cortex lie two functional regions, the visual word form area (VWFA) and the number form area (NFA), which are thought to play a special role in letter and number recognition, respectively. We review recent progress made in characterizing the origins of these symbol form areas in children or adults, sighted or blind subjects, and humans or monkeys. We propose two non-mutually-exclusive hypotheses on the origins of the VWFA and NFA: the presence of a connectivity bias, and a sensitivity to shape features. We assess the explanatory power of these hypotheses, describe

Parietal dysfunction during number processing in children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders.

Number processing deficits are frequently seen in children prenatally exposed to alcohol. Although the parietal lobe, which is known to mediate several key aspects of number processing, has been shown to be structurally impaired in fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD), effects on functional activity in this region during number processing have not previously been investigated. This fMRI study of 49 children examined differences in activation associated with prenatal alcohol exposure in five key parietal regions involved in number processing, using tasks involving simple addition and magnitu
