Prevalence and characterization of IncQ1α-mediated multi-drug resistance in Proteus mirabilis Isolated from pigs in Kunming, Yunnan, China.

BACKGROUND: Proteus mirabilis is a conditionally pathogenic bacterium that is inherently resistant to polymyxin and tigecycline, largely due to antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). These ARGs can be horizontally transferred to other bacteria, raising concerns about the Inc plasmid-mediated ARG transmission from Proteus mirabilis, which poses a serious public health threat. This study aims to investigate the presence of Inc plasmid types in pig-derived Proteus mirabilis in Kunming, Yunnan, China. METHODS: Fecal samples were collected from pig farms across six districts of Kunming (Luquan, Jinni

Anti-Adhesion Activity of A2-type Proanthocyanidins (a Cranberry Major Component) on Uropathogenic E. coli and P. mirabilis Strains.

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are relatively common in women and may be classified as uncomplicated or complicated, depending upon the urinary tract anatomy and physiology. Acute uncomplicated cystitis (AUC) occurs when urinary pathogens from the bowel or vagina colonize the periurethral mucosa and reach the bladder. The vast majority of episodes in healthy women involving the same bacterial strain that caused the initial infection are thought to be reinfections. About 90% of AUC are caused by uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC), but Proteus mirabilis also plays an important role. Several

Catalytic and structural properties of IRT-21 beta-lactamase (TEM-77) from a co-amoxiclav-resistant Proteus mirabilis isolate.

Proteus mirabilis strain MAG1, a clinical isolate that is resistant to broad-spectrum penicillins and co-amoxiclav, produces inhibitor-resistant TEM (IRT)-21, a novel mutant of TEM beta-lactamase. This enzyme has a pI of 5.2 and is derived from the bla(TEM-1a) gene ancestor. It contains two major amino acid substitutions specific for co-amoxiclav resistance (Leu-69 for Met and Ser-244 for Arg) that have never been found together previously. The dramatic loss of sensitivity to clavulanic acid, the enhancement of K(m) for all beta-lactams and markedly for ticarcillin, and the decrease in the cat

Comparative Study of the Cytotoxic Effects of Outer Membrane Vesicles from Proteus mirabilis and Escherichia coli on HK-2 Cells.

Objectives: This study aimed to explore the cellular injury phenotypes induced by outer membrane vesicles (OMVs) from uropathogenic Escherichia coli (E. coli, UPEC) and Proteus mirabilis (P. mirabilis, P. m) in human renal tubular epithelial HK-2 cells in vitro. Introduction: In urological practice, UPEC and P. mirabilis are representative pathogens of uncomplicated and complicated UTIs, respectively. Both are Gram-negative bacteria, and a notable feature of these bacteria is their ability to secrete OMVs. OMVs are nanoscale vesicles containing lipopolysaccharides (LPS), phospholipids, peptido

Co-infection with Proteus mirabilis and extraintestinal pathogenic Escherichia coli aggravated liver injury in chickens by disrupting the jejunal barrier.

Avian pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC), belong to extraintestinal pathogenic E. coli (ExPEC), causes colibacillosis in poultry, characterized by fibrinous inflammation of internal organs, high morbidity and mortality, economic losses, and food safety concerns. Proteus mirabilis is frequently isolated alongside APEC from diseased chickens, yet its role in colibacillosis remains unclear. As the intestinal lumen serves as a reservoir for both E. coli and P. mirabilis, it is possible that APEC triggers colibacillosis from the intestines, though this pathway has not been extensively studied. The

A unique fatal case of Waterhouse-Friderichsen syndrome caused by Proteus mirabilis in an immunocompetent subject: Case report and literature analysis.

INTRODUCTION: The Waterhouse-Friderichsen syndrome (WFS), also known as purpura fulminans, is a potentially lethal condition described as acute hemorrhagic necrosis of the adrenal glands. It is often caused by infection. Classically, Neisseriae meningitidis represents the main microorganism related to WFS, although, infrequently, also other infectious agents are reported as a possible etiologic agent. The authors report the first case of death due to Proteus mirabilis infection, with postmortem evidence of WFS. PATIENT CONCERNS: After a facial trauma that provoked a wound on the nose, the sub

St. Catherine of Siena (1347-1380 AD): one of the earliest historic cases of altered gustatory perception in anorexia mirabilis.

St. Catherine of Siena suffered from an extreme form of holy fasting, a condition classified as anorexia mirabilis (also known as inedia prodigiosa). Historical and medical scholarships alike have drawn a comparison between this primaeval type of anorexia with a relatively common form of eating disorder among young women in the modern world, anorexia nervosa. St. Catherine's condition was characterised by a disgust for sweet taste, a condition also described in anorexia nervosa, and characterised by specific neurophysiological changes in the brain. St. Catherine's case may be considered one of

Phyllotaxis, ontogeny and CT imaging: old and new approaches to understanding optimal seed packing in Middle Jurassic Araucaria mirabilis cones.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Fibonacci spiral phyllotaxis is overwhelmingly the most common leaf arrangement among plants, both today and in the fossil record. Spiral phyllotaxis appeared as early as the Late Devonian, some 380 Mya. This mathematical property has been studied rigorously in living conifer species; however, the phyllotaxis of fossil conifer seed cones remains under-studied, including that of the Middle Jurassic seed cones of Araucaria mirabilis. METHODS: Twenty-one A. mirabilis seed cones from the Bosques Petrificados de Jaramillo National Park, Argentina, were analysed for their morph

First report of extensively-drug-resistant Proteus mirabilis isolate carrying plasmid-mediated blaNDM-1 in a Tunisian intensive care unit.

Emergence of the New Delhi metallo-β-lactamase (NDM-1), an Ambler class B metallo-β-lactamase able to hydrolyse all β-lactams except monobactams, constitutes a critical and increasingly important medical issue. The acquisition of blaNDM-1 is of particular concern for Proteus mirabilis, which is intrinsically resistant to tetracycline, tigecycline and colistin, as this will make clinical treatment extremely difficult. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first report of the blaNDM-1 gene in an extensively-drug-resistant P. mirabilis clinical isolate carrying plasmid-mediated resistance to car

[Characteristic of fluoroquinolone resistant clinical isolates of K. pneumoniae, P. mirabilis and E. coli producing ESBL and AmpC beta-lactamases].

INTRODUCTION: Extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBLs) are the predominant mechanism for acquired antibiotic resistance in Enterobacteriaceae. During the past few years, increasing occurrence of plasmid-mediated AmpC beta-lactamases (pAmpCs) particularly in K. pneumonia, P. mirabilis and E. coli was reported. Therefore, the aim of our study was to analyse of the diversity of plasmid-mediated beta-lactamases such as pAmpCs and ESBLs among clinical K. pneumonia, P. mirabilis and E. coli strains in Poland. METHODS: A total of 19 clinical Enterobacteriaceae strains (E. coli, n = 9; K. pneumoniae

Chromosomally encoded blaCMY-2 located on a novel SXT/R391-related integrating conjugative element in a Proteus mirabilis clinical isolate.

Integrating conjugative elements (ICEs) are mobile genetic elements that can transfer from the chromosome of a host to the chromosome of a new host through the process of excision, conjugation, and integration. Although SXT/R391-related ICEs, originally demonstrated in Vibrio cholerae O139 isolates, have become prevalent among V. cholerae isolates in Asia, the prevalence of the ICEs among gram-negative bacteria other than Vibrio spp. remains unknown. In addition, SXT/R391-related ICEs carrying genes conferring resistance to extended-spectrum cephalosporins have never been described. Here we ca

Ynt is the primary nickel import system used by Proteus mirabilis and specifically contributes to fitness by supplying nickel for urease activity.

Proteus mirabilis is a Gram-negative uropathogen and frequent cause of catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI). One important virulence factor is its urease enzyme, which requires nickel to be catalytically active. It is, therefore, hypothesized that nickel import is critical for P. mirabilis urease activity and pathogenesis during infection. P. mirabilis strain HI4320 encodes two putative nickel import systems, designated Nik and Ynt. By disrupting the substrate-binding proteins from each import system (nikA and yntA), we show that Ynt is the primary nickel importer, while Nik onl

Initiation of swarming motility by Proteus mirabilis occurs in response to specific cues present in urine and requires excess L-glutamine.

Proteus mirabilis, a leading cause of catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CaUTI), differentiates into swarm cells that migrate across catheter surfaces and medium solidified with 1.5% agar. While many genes and nutrient requirements involved in the swarming process have been identified, few studies have addressed the signals that promote initiation of swarming following initial contact with a surface. In this study, we show that P. mirabilis CaUTI isolates initiate swarming in response to specific nutrients and environmental cues. Thirty-three compounds, including amino acids, polyami
