[Infections of the hand].

The possibilities of hand injuries lead to the higher incidence of hand infections. The clinical signs of inflammation (pain, swelling, heat, loss of function and red colour) are found in near all cases. The start of pain and its localisation help to find quickly the layer of the inflammatory process. Bites, foreign bodies, puncture wounds and open wounds especially those acquired in slaughterhouse or agriculture are in most cases the predisposing conditions. Treatment of hand infections demands a consequent protocol consisting in: exact diagnostics including clinical picture, laboratory inves

Blunt Force Trauma in Veterinary Forensic Pathology.

Veterinary pathologists commonly encounter lesions of blunt trauma. The development of lesions is affected by the object's mass, velocity, size, shape, and angle of impact and by the plasticity and mobility of the impacted organ. Scrape, impact, and pattern abrasions cause localized epidermal loss and sometimes broken hairs and implanted foreign material. Contusions are best identified after reflecting the skin, and must be differentiated from coagulopathies and livor mortis. Lacerations-traumatic tissue tears-may have irregular margins, bridging by more resilient tissue, deviation of the woun

Skin disease among Latino farmworkers in North Carolina.

An estimated 4.2 million seasonal and migrant farmworkers and their dependents live in the U.S. Most of these farmworkers are Latino. These workers are exposed to numerous occupational and environmental risk factors that can result in skin disease. Few data exist on the prevalence of skin disease in this population. The purpose of this study was to estimate the prevalence and predictors of skin disease in a sample of Latino farmworkers in North Carolina. A sample of 59 farmworkers was recruited and interviewed at two camps during the 2004 agricultural season. A dermatologist completed a skin e

Examination of gender in pathologic grooming behaviors.

Trichotillomania and pathologic skin picking are pathologic versions of grooming behaviors. Although mentioned in the psychiatric literature for decades, little is known about how gender influences clinical presentation of these behaviors. Seventy-seven adult subjects (12 men) with trichotillomania or pathologic skin picking were examined on a variety of clinical measures including symptom severity, functioning, and comorbidity. There were more similarities than differences between men and women with these behaviors. Some significant differences, however, were that men with grooming disorders

Evaluation of temporomandibular disorders in children using limited cone-beam computed tomography: a case report.

Considerable advances have been made in dental and orthodontic diagnosis resulting from the development of a device known as a limited cone beam dental compact-CT (3DX). This report documents the diagnostic procedures and treatment performed on an eight year old female patient who presented with clinical signs and symptoms of a temporomandibular disorder (TMD). Evaluation of a bony abnormality of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) using the limited cone-beam CT (3DX) proved to be of considerable value. A three-dimensional image of the right TMJ showed erosion and flattening of the condyle. Foll

[Failures and tongue rehabilitation].

When confronted with difficult-to-eradicate dysfunctions and parafunctions, speech therapy most often proves a reliable ally to control the functional environment of the dental arches. However, a number of factors ranging from psychological issues to anatomical ENT obstructions, from genetic anomalies to iatrogenic procedures, account for the occasional mixed results achieved using this approach. In addition, our own treatment results can also be jeopardized or even obliterated by a recalcitrant tongue or one which has been inadequately provided for. The author will analyze the different facto

Non-suicidal self-injury in trichotillomania and skin picking disorder.

BACKGROUND: Trichotillomania and skin picking disorder have been characterized as body-focused repetitive behavior (BFRB) disorders (i.e., repetitive self-grooming behaviors that involve biting, pulling, picking, or scraping one's own hair, skin, lips, cheeks, or nails). Trichotillomania and skin picking disorder have also historically been classified, by some, as types of compulsive self-injury as they involve repetitive hair pulling and skin picking, respectively. The question of the relationship of these disorders to more conventional forms of self-injury such as cutting or self-burning rem
