Nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome: relation with desmoplastic medulloblastoma in infancy. A population-based study and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Patients with nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome (NBCCS) are believed to be predisposed to develop early-onset neoplasms including medulloblastomas (MB). The desmoplastic subtype of MB is associated most commonly with NBCCS. The goals of this study were to demonstrate the relation between desmoplastic MB and NBCCS and to evaluate the concomitant diagnosis of NBCCS and MB. METHODS: The medical records of 76 consecutive children who received surgical treatment for MB between 1970 and 2000 were studied. A review of the literature was performed based on the National Library of Medic

Basal cell carcinoma arising in pemphigus vulgaris of the lower eyelid.

A 59-year-old woman on continuous treatment with corticosteroids and immunosuppressive drugs for pemphigus vulgaris of 14 year's duration presented with an enlarging nodular lesion on the right lower eyelid. The neoplasm, diagnosed as basal cell carcinoma, was excised conserving the lid margin, and eyelid reconstruction was done with a rotated cheek flap. Wound healing proceeded without complications in spite of immunosuppressive treatment, and the final cosmetic and functional result was satisfactory.

Basal Cell Adenoma of the Minor Salivary Glands in the Buccal Mucosa: A Rare Entity Arising in an Unusual Location.

One of the rare tumors of the salivary gland is known as basal cell adenoma (BCA). Only a small percentage of salivary gland tumors affect the minor salivary gland of the oral cavity while the majority are found in the parotid gland. We present a rare case of BCA involving the left buccal mucosa of a 45-year-old female. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed well defined solid mass measuring 1.9 x 1.5 cm in the left buccal space inseparable from the buccinator muscle. The T2-weighted image demonstrates a hyperintense signal post-contrast. Ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration cytology reve

Uveal melanoma in association with multiple malignancies. A case report and review.

A 66-year-old man had a pigmented choroidal lesion in his right eye. Over a subsequent period of 8 1/2 years, the lesion showed slight growth. At autopsy, the diagnosis was spindle B melanoma of the choroid without evidence of systemic metastasis. A very unusual feature of this case was the presence in this patient of seven primary malignant tumors and five benign neoplasms. In addition to the choroidal melanoma, these included three distinct pulmonary carcinomas, leiomyosarcoma of the stomach, adenocarcinoma of the sigmoid colon, and basal cell carcinoma. The literature on multiple malignanci

Basal cell carcinoma metastatic to the salivary glands: differential diagnosis in fine-needle aspiration cytology.

A disparate group of salivary gland neoplasms is characterized by small, uniform, hyperchromatic, basaloid cells. This "small blue cell" pattern is most common in non-Warthin's types of monomorphic adenoma, or in adenoid cystic carcinoma. Small cell anaplastic carcinoma (primary or metastatic), metastatic basaloid squamous cell carcinoma, basal cell adenocarcinoma, and metastatic nasopharyngeal carcinoma are rarely encountered but may present a cytologically similar appearance. We report one female and two male patients (median age = 84 yr) with cutaneous-type basal cell carcinoma (BCC) aspira

A novel nuclear substructure, ND10: distribution in normal and neoplastic human tissues.

ND10 are recently characterized nuclear domains that are composed of 0.5 microm sized, precisely circumscribed dots in cultured human cell lines. To investigate the distribution and number of ND10 on various types of normal and neoplastic human tissues, we carried out immunostaining and immunoprecipitation analyses with monoclonal antibodies 138 and 1150. The number of ND10 varied from 1 to 10 or more in various tissues as did their size. ND10 were diffusely located in early embryonic and normal tissues, except for the exocrine and endocrine cells of the pancreas and for hepatocytes. In normal

[Basal cell nevus syndrome in roentgen diagnosis of the skull].

Besides uni- and multilocular jaw cysts the Gorlin-Goltz-syndrome shows other characteristic radiographic findings which help to ensure diagnosis. These are particularly calcification of the falx cerebri and a so called "bridging" between processus clinoideus anterior und posterior of the sella turcica. The importance of early diagnosis is stressed.

Locally aggressive granular cell tumor causing priapism of the crus of the clitoris. A light and ultrastructural study, with observations concerning the pathogenesis of fibrosis of the corpus cavernosum in priapism.

A case of focal priapism of the clitoris caused by a microscopic granular cell tumor (GCT) is described. This neoplasm is considered locally aggressive because it invades the lumens of peripheral cavernous sinuses of the crus of the clitoris. Caverns adjacent to those invaded by tumor exhibit stasis, telangiectasia, and necrosis of the smooth muscle of the trabecular wall. These alterations lead to telescoping collapse and compression of the cavernous spaces and culminate in fibrosis. Ultrastructurally, replicated basal lamina is found surrounding clusters of granular cells. We suspect that th

Multiple Foci of Basal Cell Carcinoma Arising in Rhinophyma: A Case Report and Literature Review.

BACKGROUND: Rhinophyma is a benign condition caused by the excessive growth of sebaceous glands in the nasal tissue, presenting with symptoms such as nasal hypertrophy, erythema, and papules. Cases of basal cell carcinoma in rhinophyma have been reported in literature, but its etiological role remains unclear. It is uncertain whether rhinophyma is predisposed to neoplasm development or if their coexistence is coincidental. MATERIAL AND METHOD: We conducted a literature survey to identify such cases reported over the years. RESULTS: We identified 22 studies reporting a total of 47 cases in th

Utility of GLI1 RNA Chromogenic in Situ Hybridization in Distinguishing Basal Cell Carcinoma From Histopathologic Mimics.

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common human malignancy and is a leading cause of nonmelanoma skin cancer-related morbidity. BCC has several histologic mimics which may have treatment and prognostic implications. Furthermore, BCC may show alternative differentiation toward a variety of cutaneous structures. The vast majority of BCCs harbor mutations in the hedgehog signaling pathway, resulting in increased expression of the GLI family of transcription factors. GLI1 immunohistochemistry has been shown to discriminate between several tumor types but demonstrates high background signal and

Immunohistochemical analysis of keratin distribution in eccrine poroma.

Although eccrine poroma has been thought of as a neoplasm of the intradermal eccrine duct, this interpretation has not been entirely confirmed. In this study, twenty-five cases of eccrine poroma were retrieved and analyzed by immunohistochemical techniques, using various kinds of monoclonal antikeratin antibodies. Comparative immunohistochemical observations of eccrine poroma and normal eccrine glands revealed that the poroma cells expressed immunophenotypes similar to those of the basal cells of dermal eccrine ducts. Sweat-ductlike structures showed similar staining patterns to those observed

[Hereditary cancer predisposition syndromes-significance of gynecological cancers].

A number of gynecologic cancers are associated with hereditary cancer syndromes (HCS). These neoplasms may represent the sentinel lesion for HCS within the affected individual/family. Many of these tumors exhibit distinctive histologic and immunohistochemical features that are associated with HCS tumors. By recognizing these features, pathologists may help in identifying HCS which is important regarding primary prevention efforts and personalized care for affected patients. This review summarizes morphologic features for HCS, such as BRCA, Lynch, Peutz-Jeghers, DICER1, rhabdoid tumor predispos

The many clinico-pathologic faces of actinic keratosis: an atlas.

Actinic keratoses (AKs) are intraepithelial neoplasms formed by atypical keratinocyte proliferation. Histopathologically, typical AKs are characterized by a slightly thickened epidermis, usually with irregular downward buds, orthokeratosis alternating with parakeratosis ('pink and blue') with loss of the underlying granular layer and a disarrangement of the epidermis with atypical keratinocytes at the basal layer. There are several histopathological variants of AK according to the different degrees of keratinocytic atypia, epidermal hyperplasia/atrophy, inflammation and pigmentation. Some auth

Porocarcinoma coexisting at a site of Bowen disease in a 63-year-old woman.

Porocarcinoma is an unusual, locally aggressive and potentially fatal neoplasm. Several cutaneous malignancies have been described in association with porocarcinoma, including squamous cell carcinoma, basal cell carcinoma and tricholemmal carcinoma. Previous reports have indicated that the occurrence of malignant tumours in combination with porocarcinoma is extremely rare, in particular with regard to Bowen disease (BD). We report an uncommon case of porocarcinoma occurring synchronously in a single BD lesion in a 63-year-old woman with multiple BD lesions. The clinical and histological findin
