OBJECTIVE: To investigate metabolic differences between pure and mixed calcium oxalate (CaOx) stone formers and identify key metabolic signatures for prevention strategies.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 101 patients from a metabolic clinic database, identifying 49 (48.5%) as CaOx stone formers based on non-zero CaOx monohydrate or dihydrate percentages. Patients were stratified into 25 (51%) with pure CaOx stones and 24 (49%) with mixed stones (CaOx with secondary components). Metabolic parameters (urine volume, calcium, citrate, oxalate, uric acid, sodium, m

BACKGROUND: Adrenocortical carcinoma (ACC) is an exceedingly rare malignancy in children, typically presenting with Cushing's syndrome due to excessive hormone secretion. The occurrence of uric acid nephrolithiasis in pediatric ACC patients is exceptionally uncommon.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 5-year-old boy who exhibited symptoms of Cushing's syndrome over a period of 10 months, including rapid weight gain, moon face, and increased chest and back hair growth. Laboratory tests revealed elevated cortisol, 17-hydroxyprogesterone, and testosterone levels. Imaging studies identifi

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: Endourological and percutaneous approaches are the standard of care for treatment of pediatric urolithiasis. However, in certain situations, an endoscopic-assisted robotic pyelolithotomy (EARP) can be an acceptable alternative. Limited data exist on pediatric EARP; thus, the authors describe their experience.
METHODS: Patient selection: The authors retrospectively analyzed the records of all robotic procedures performed at five institutions from 7/09-10/17 to identify patients who underwent EARP. The authors collected demographics data, indications, operative time,

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Living kidney donation is the preferred choice for renal transplantation due to superior short-tem and long-term recipient, patient, and graft survival. However, living donor safety is essential, and in-depth donor evaluation is required to minimize donor risk. Kidney stone disease is prevalent in the general population, and many kidney donor candidates have had recent or remote stone events. This review will explore the prevalence, causes, and required steps in donor evaluation for stones to maintain donor safety.
RECENT FINDINGS: In the United States, the prevalence of ki

Primary hyperparathyroidism (pHPT) is marked by mineral imbalances, often leading to nephrolithiasis and osteoporosis. While imaging remains the cornerstone for stone detection, there is growing interest in biochemical markers that could enhance diagnostic accuracy. This study investigates the calcium-to-magnesium (Ca/Mg) ratio as a novel biomarker for nephrolithiasis, comparing its utility to traditional 24-h urinary calcium excretion and exploring its broader clinical implications. In this retrospective study of 367 pHPT patients, clinical, biochemical, and bone mineral density (BMD) data we

Familial Hypomagnesemia with Hypercalciuria and Nephrocalcinosis (FHHNC) is a rare tubulopathy resulting from mutations in the CLDN16 and CLDN19 genes. The affected individuals commonly present with polyuria, polydipsia, excessive urinary magnesium (Mg) and calcium (Ca) wasting, nephrocalcinosis, nephrolithiasis, recurrent urinary tract infections, and renal dysfunction. We herein report a 22-year-old male born to consanguineous parents presenting with recurrent nephrolithiasis since early childhood. He gave a previous history of muscle cramps, tetany, and seizures on multiple occasions with r

Lyndon Baines Johnson, the 36th president of the United States, was troubled with kidney stones for most of his adult life. Three times during his political career, he required either endoscopic or open surgical removal of stones. This review will highlight the symptomatic presentation of his stones, his nephrolithiasis' effect on his political career, and the methods used and reasoning for treating his nephrolithiasis.

Kidney stone, one of the oldest known diseases, has plagued humans for centuries, consistently imposing a heavy burden on patients and healthcare systems worldwide due to their high incidence and recurrence rates. Advancements in endoscopy, imaging, genetics, molecular biology and bioinformatics have led to a deeper and more comprehensive understanding of the mechanism behind nephrolithiasis. Kidney stone formation is a complex, multi-step and long-term process involving the transformation of stone-forming salts from free ions into asymptomatic or symptomatic stones influenced by physical, che

Cornelia de Lange syndrome (CdLS) is a rare genetic disorder characterized by a distinctive facial appearance, growth/cognitive retardation, developmental delay, skeletal malformation, hypertrichosis, and other abnormalities. Patients with mild CdLS have less severe phenotypes, while retaining representative facial features. Mutations in the genes NIPBL, SMC1A, SMC3, HDAC8, and RAD21 have been associated with CdLS, with mutations in NIPBL accounting for approximately 60% of cases. Herein, we present a case of CdLS accompanied by cholelithiasis and nephrolithiasis. A 9-year-old Korean boy prese

INTRODUCTION: The use of modern information technologies allows to increase confidence in the choice of a surgical treatment method of kidney stones, as well as to improve the quality of treatment due to an adequate combination of therapeutic techniques.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In our study we analyzed the treatment results of 625 patients with kidney stones. We created a register with the information on more than 50 parameters for each patient. Each example had an output parameter representing a predefined treatment strategy (extracorporeal shock-wave lithotripsy [ESWL]-1, percutaneous nephro

PURPOSE: Emerging data have indicated that nephrolithiasis is possibly associated with subclinical coronary artery disease (CAD). Considering that a significant proportion of obstructive CAD in non-elderly individuals occurs in those without detectable calcium score (CACS), this study aimed to investigate whether nephrolithiasis is still associated with CAD as assessed by coronary computed tomography (CT)-derived luminal stenosis [using Gensini score (GS)].
METHODS: A total of 1170 asymptomatic adults without known CAD who underwent health examinations were recruited. Nephrolithiasis was asse

BACKGROUND: Nephrolithiasis is not a well-documented condition in children with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA). It is possible that this condition was underestimated before the era of nusinersen because of a much shorter life expectancy. We present our observational data on nephrolithiasis and its possible risk factors in children with type 1 SMA.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the charts of 20 children with genetically confirmed type 1 SMA. Thirteen patients (aged 9 to 55 months) who underwent urinary tract ultrasonography were included in the study. Medical records were retrospectively

BACKGROUND: Existing evidence shows that there is an independent correlation between nephrolithiasis and gout, and hyperuricemia is the most important risk factor for gout. However, hyperuricemia was often used as an accompanying symptom of gout to explore its association with nephrolithiasis, there were few studies to explore whether hyperuricemia itself or serum uric acid (SUA) is related to the risk of nephrolithiasis. Evidence on the relationship between hyperuricemia and nephrolithiasis is still insufficient.
METHODS: A total of 22,303 participants aged 30 to 79 years who participated in

INTRODUCTION: Chronic hypoparathyroidism managed with conventional treatment, comprising oral administration of calcium and active vitamin D, has been associated with renal complications, including nephrolithiasis and nephrocalcinosis. Further larger-scale studies are needed to examine these risks. This study evaluated the risk of nephrolithiasis and nephrocalcinosis in patients with chronic hypoparathyroidism.
METHODS: A retrospective cohort study using a managed care claims database in the United States from January 2007 to June 2017. Included patients were those with chronic hypoparathyroi

BACKGROUND: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), a hepatic manifestation or precursor of metabolic syndrome, may increase nephrolithiasis, a renal manifestation of insulin resistance, but the prospective association between NAFLD and incident nephrolithiasis has not been evaluated. We examined the association of NAFLD with the development of nephrolithiasis in a large cohort of Korean men and women.
METHODS: We performed a cohort study of 208,578 Korean adults who underwent a health checkup examination between January 2002 and December 2014 and were followed-up annually or biennially th

BACKGROUND: Using a proteomic approach, we aimed to identify and compare the urinary excretion of proteins involved in lipid transport and metabolism in children with kidney stones and hypercalciuria (CAL), hypocitraturia (CIT), and normal metabolic work-up (NM), and in healthy controls (HCs). Additionally, we aimed to confirm these results using ELISA, and to examine the relationship between the urinary excretion of selected proteins with demographic, dietary, blood, and urinary parameters.

BACKGROUND: Lithiasis during pregnancy can be a serious problem representing a danger to both the mother and the fetus. Surgical intervention is needed in approximately one-third of patients reporting pain despite analgesia and/or signs of persistent infection and obstruction, but there is a lack of consensus in the scientific literature as to the use of the most appropriate procedure to treat this condition.
CASE PRESENTATION: We describe our experience in the treatment of a complicated reno-ureteral lithiasis in a 27-year-old patient in the first trimester of pregnancy. The patient had a ca
