[Electrophysiological study on pathophysiology of Bell's palsy--distribution of nerve conduction velocities (DNCV) in facial nerve with collision method].

The etiology of Bell's palsy is still obscure, but the hypothesis that hypoxia and compression of the nerve induced by edema in the Fallopian canal are the main causes of Bell's palsy is widely accepted. Tojima (1988) reported that the motor nerve conduction velocity (MCV) gradually decreased as degeneration of the nerve fibers progressed in Bell's palsy. The majority of facial nerve fibers are myelinated, and the greater the fiber diameter, the faster the conduction velocity. For this reason, Tojima suggested that Wallerian degeneration in Bell's palsy would begin from the thicker myelinated

An increased frequency of carpal tunnel syndrome in sarcoidosis. Results of a study based on nerve conduction study.

Sarcoidosis is a systemic disease which affects the musculoskeletal system; however, its association with carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) has been reported only rarely. In our study, we tried to determine the prevalence of CTS in our consecutive sarcoidosis patients based on their symptoms and nerve conduction study (NCS). Fifty-six patients (mean age: 45.2) who were followed up with the diagnosis of sarcoidosis at our center and who gave informed consent for NCS were included into the study. The patients were questionned for the presence of hand symptoms: paresthesia, pain, nocturnal paresthesia

A new method to define cutoff values in nerve conduction studies for carpal tunnel syndrome considering the presence of false-positive cases.

BACKGROUND: Nerve conduction studies (NCS) are useful tools for diagnosing carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). Establishing the normal values is the first step required for utilizing NCS for diagnosis. Previous epidemiological studies demonstrated the presence of fairly large number of false-positive subjects regarding NCS among control population, which has not been properly considered in past studies. This study proposed a new method to address this issue. METHODS: Non-diabetic 144 CTS patients were retrospectively enrolled using clinically defined inclusion criteria. Controls consisted of 73 age

Clinical utility of tibial motor and sensory nerve conduction studies with motor recording from the flexor hallucis brevis: a methodological and reliability study.

BACKGROUND: Standard tibial motor nerve conduction measures are established with recording from the abductor hallucis. This technique is often technically challenging and clinicians have difficulty interpreting the information particularly in the short segment needed to assess focal tibial nerve entrapment at the medial ankle as occurs in posterior tarsal tunnel syndrome. The flexor hallucis brevis (FHB) has been described as an alternative site for recording tibial nerve function in those with posterior tarsal tunnel syndrome. Normative data has not been established for this technique. This p

A Comparative Analysis Between Ultrasound and Electromyographic and Nerve Conduction Studies in Diagnosing Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS): A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is the most common upper extremity neuropathy. The disease initially manifests as a sensory disorder in the form of paresthesia, numbness, or tingling of the fingers. The diagnosis is usually made based on history and clinical symptoms, which are confirmed using nerve conduction studies (NCS) and electromyography. More recently, ultrasound has gained more use in CTS diagnosis due to its advantages, which include patients' comfort during diagnosis, better visualization of anatomy and nerve forms directly, and cost-effectiveness. However, a literature review shows th

Spinal cord injury level and Phrenic Nerve Conduction Studies do not predict diaphragm pacing success or failure- all patients should undergo diagnostic laparoscopy.

BACKGROUND: Diaphragm Pacing(DP) demonstrates benefits over mechanical ventilation(MV) for spinal cord injured(SCI) patients. The hypothesis of this report is that phrenic nerve conduction study(PNCS) results cannot differentiate success or failure in selection of patients for DP. Direct surgical evaluation of the diaphragm should be performed. METHODS: Observational report of prospective databases of patients undergoing laparoscopic evaluation of their diaphragms to assess for ability to stimulate to cause contraction for ventilation. RESULTS: In 50 SCI patients who could not be weaned from

Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disease Type 1A: Influence of Body Mass Index on Nerve Conduction Studies and on the Charcot-Marie-Tooth Examination Score.

PURPOSE: Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disease type 1A (CMT1A) is caused by a duplication of the peripheral myelin protein gene 22 at chromosome 17p11.2-12. There is limited data regarding whether body mass index (BMI) affects electrophysiological or clinical data in those with CMT1A. METHODS: Electrophysiological data, the Charcot-Marie-Tooth examination score (CMTES) and BMI from 101 patients with known CMT1A were obtained and analyzed. RESULTS: When controlling for age, a higher BMI does not affect ulnar motor nerve conduction studies in those with CMT1A, but rather components of the CMTES (loss of

Correlation Between Ultrasound and Nerve Conduction Study Findings in Evaluating Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

Background Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is the most common entrapment neuropathy, caused by median nerve compression within the carpal tunnel, leading to pain, numbness, and functional impairment. Nerve conduction studies (NCS) remain the diagnostic gold standard, while ultrasonography (US) offers a non-invasive complementary modality. This study evaluated the correlation and agreement between US and NCS in CTS. Methodology In this cross-sectional study conducted at Dhaka Medical College Hospital from August 2021 to September 2022, 48 symptomatic patients (one hand per patient) underwent stand
