Periodontal management of gingival enlargement associated with Sturge-Weber syndrome.

The Sturge-Weber syndrome is a rare uncommon neurocutaneous disorders with angiomas involving the leptomeninges (Leptomeningeal Angiomas) and skin of the face, typically in the ophthalmic (V1) and maxillary (V2) distributions of the trigeminal nerve. The cutaneous angioma is called a Port-Wine Stain. It is commonly referred to as "Sturge-Weber syndrome after Sturge and Weber who first described this affliction in 1879. This article present a case of Sturge-Weber syndrome associated with gingival enlargement, its management and follow-up results.

Neurocutaneous disorders identified in the neonatal period and infancy: Hypomelanosis of Ito.

Hypomelanosis of Ito is a rare neurocutaneous disorder named after the Japanese dermatologist Minoru Ito who in 1952 described the condition. Characteristically, the hypopigmented lesions in this condition follow Blaschko lines. Extracutaneous manifestations of the disease include neurological, musculoskeletal, cardiac, endocrine, and renal signs and symptoms. The most common neurological manifestation is cognitive impairment. Seizures, developmental delay, and abnormal tone can also be present. In this review we discuss the condition's clinical presentations, its diagnostic criteria, and cons

Neuro-ocular cutaneous syndrome: a case report.

Neuro-ocular cutaneous syndrome is a rare and little-known illness. It affects the ocular apparatus, the nervous system and the skin. The disease causes pathologies such as phacomatosis, which is a generic term used to describe small cutaneous neoformations, as well as other ectodermal organ malformations (ocular apparatus and central nervous system). The symptoms of this disease are ocular, neurological and dermatological and can include: corneal opacity, papillary coloboma, optical atrophy, epibulbar dermoids, corectopia, palpebral coloboma, frontoparietal alopecia, epilepsy, psychomotor del

Gómez-López-Hernández Syndrome: A Rare Cause of Bilateral Nonscarring Alopecia.

Gómez-López-Hernández syndrome is a rare neurocutaneous disorder characterized by the triad of rhombencephalosynapsis, parietal alopecia, and trigeminal anesthesia. We report a 16-year-old girl with bilateral parietotemporal alopecia in whom cranial magnetic resonance imaging revealed rhombencephalosynapsis, suggesting a diagnosis of Gómez-López-Hernández syndrome. Neurologic examination and neuroimaging may be warranted in select patients with parietal alopecia to exclude this uncommon entity.

The Sturge-Weber syndrome.

The Sturge-Weber syndrome is characterized by angiomas of the leptomeninges overlying the cerebral cortex in association with a facial nevus flammeus. Although frequently included with other neurocutaneous genodermatoses, the syndrome is almost always sporadic in occurrence. The most common associated neurologic abnormality is seizures, which are controlled in more than 50% of patients by the administration of anticonvulsants. Laser therapy is the most promising therapeutic option for cosmetic management of the facial nevus flammeus.

Atypical Presentation of PHACE Syndrome: Hidden Facial Hemangioma.

PHACE(S) syndrome is a neurocutaneous syndrome with a wide array of presentations. The most known and present trait is facial hemangioma > 5 cm. The name is an acronym for Posterior fossa malformations, infantile Hemangiomas, Arterial anomalies, aortic Coarctation, Eye abnormalities, and middle-line malformations of the Sternum. The exact etiopathogenic mechanism of this syndrome is not fully understood, and its treatment depends on detailed and individualized assessment. The aim of this paper is to describe a child with a throat hemangioma, vascular malformations, cognitive delay, and other a

Neurocutaneous melanosis: follow-up and literature review.

Neurocutaneous melanosis is a rare, congenital, non-inherited syndrome characterized by numerous and/or large congenital nevi with intracranial leptomeningeal melanocytosis. This report describes two patients, presenting with a giant congenital nevus involving a major portion of the posterior trunk with satellite congenital nevi scattered all over the body, who developed seizures at 4 and 6 months of age, respectively. Changes in follow-up magnetic resonance (MR) examinations over an 8-year period were seen in case 1, while parenchymal melanocytic accumulation was reported in the region of the

Bilateral intracranial calcifications with bilateral facial cutaneous naevus: Sturge Weber syndrome.

Sturge Weber syndrome also known as mother spot disease belongs to a group of disorders called phakomatoses (neurocutaneous syndromes involving the central nervous and cutaneous systems). It is a congenital disorder of the vasculature of the meninges, brain, face and eyes. Clinically, it usually presents with seizures and other neurological complications, including mental retardation, contralateral hemiparesis and glaucoma. Its incidence is estimated at one case in 20 000-50 000 persons with equal frequency in boys and girls. We present a case of 18-months-old boy was brought by parents with h

[Neuropediatric approach to autism].

Autism is defined by 3 main criteria: disturbance of reciprocal social interaction, disturbance of communication (including language comprehension and spoken language) and disturbance of normal variation in behaviour and imaginative activities; an onset before age 36 months is also required. The neuropediatric contribution to autism is dominated by the search for an underlying organic etiology, especially if there are arguments for an associated encephalopathy: ante- or perinatal medical history, dysmorphic signs, skin spots, neurological abnormalities, somatic abnormalities compatible with a

Cutaneous mosaicism of lethal mutations.

The concept of autosomal lethal genes surviving only in a mosaic state was proposed by Happle to explain the genetic basis of several syndromes characterized by (almost always) sporadic occurrence, distribution of lesions in a scattered or asymmetrical pattern, variable extent of involvement, lack of diffuse involvement of entire organs, and equal sex ratio. The mosaic may either arise from a gametic half-chromatid mutation or from an early postzygotic mutation. The purpose of this article is to review current knowledge of the genetics and cutaneous manifestations of some of the birth defects

Do you know this syndrome? Sjogren-Larsson syndrome.

We report a typical case of Sjogren-Larsson syndrome in a male patient, aged 20. The Sjogren-Larsson syndrome is a neurocutaneous, autosomal recessive and disabling condition, characterized by congenital ichthyosis, spastic paraplegia and mental retardation. It is caused by deficiency of the microsomal enzyme fatty aldehyde dehydrogenase. It has no cure, but most patients survive up to an adult age. Treatment should be multidisciplinary and dermatological therapy aims at relieving the persistent itching and ichthyosis.
