METHODS: Study participants were 30 male physicians with clinical burnout and 30 controls without burnout defined by the Maslach Burnout Inventory. Global sleep quality was measured with the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Endothelium-dependent (cold pressor test

Tobacco smoke contains thousands of xenobiotics harmful to human health. Their irritant, toxic and carcinogenic potential has been well documented. Passive smoking or exposure to second-hand smoke (SHS) in public places, including workplace, poses major medical problems. Owing to this fact there is a strong need to raise workers' awareness of smoking-related hazards through educational programs and to develop and implement legislation aimed at eliminating SHS exposure. This paper presents a review of reports on passive exposure to tobacco smoke and its impact on human health and also a review

The immunisation campaign from February to December 2003 in the federal state of Schleswig-Holstein focused for the first time on the immunisation coverage in adults in the workforce. During routine occupational health checks vaccination against diphtheria, tetanus, poliomyelitis, measles, mumps, rubella, hepatitis A and B (according to vaccination certificates) as well as vaccinations carried out on site (active duty) were documented. We received 12,770 anonymous and completed questionnaires including 4167 from healthcare workers (with immunisation certificate 11,260 and 3776, respectively).

BACKGROUND: There has been increasing interest in the impact of resident-physician and nurse work hours on patient safety. The evidence demonstrates that work schedules have a profound effect on providers' sleep and performance, as well as on their safety and that of their patients. Nurses working shifts greater than 12.5 hours are at significantly increased risk of experiencing decreased vigilance on the job, suffering an occupational injury, or making a medical error. Physicians-in-training working traditional > 24-hour on-call shifts are at greatly increased risk of experiencing an occupati

OBJECTIVES: Medication use during pregnancy is common, but patterns may differ across occupational subgroups, particularly in healthcare and social assistance where working conditions, education and health literacy vary. We aimed to compare medications dispensed to pregnant women across occupations within this sector.
METHODS: We conducted a nationwide population-based study using the French EDP-Santé database, linking occupational and socioeconomic data with healthcare reimbursement records. Pregnancies from 2009 to 2015 among women aged 15-55 years were identified. Medication dispensing dur

OBJECTIVE: Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis are the two main forms of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Although the aetiology of IBD is not completely understood, an interaction between genetic and environmental factors has been proposed. In this context, however, environmental epidemiology lacks a comprehensive evaluation of the possible role of occupational exposures in IBD development and progression. Therefore, aim of our review was to evaluate how certain occupational risk factors may affect IBD pathogenesis, clinical history and severity of disease manifestations.

Although nearly half of current surgical trainees identify as women, significant reproductive health disparities persist in our field. Female surgeons experience infertility rates nearly three times that of the general U.S. population, alongside substantially higher rates of pregnancy complications-even when compared to other demanding professions. These disparities are compounded by modifiable occupational hazards and the absence of standardized accommodations during pregnancy. In this article, we synthesize current evidence, identify the specific occupational factors contributing to these di

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Three malignant pleural mesotheliomas occurred among workers of a small factory that manufactured drying machines for the textile and paper mill industries using asbestos cement (crocidolite, amosite and chrysotile) as insulating panels. The Occupational Medicine Unit of the Local Health Unit of Pistoia, Italy, carried out an intervention programme in the plant in order to 1) assess past asbestos exposure via analysis of the fibre content of samples from drying machines, and of dust samples collected in the factory. Information on the characteristics of occupational

BACKGROUND: Sleep deprivation, ubiquitous among nurses and physicians, recently has been shown to greatly increase rates of serious medical errors and occupational injuries among health care workers in the United States.
CURRENT INITIATIVES AND POLICIES: The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education's current work-hour limits for physicians-in-training allow work hours well in excess of those proven safe. No regulations limit the work hours of other groups of health care providers in the United States. Consequently, nursing work shifts exceeding 12 hours remain common. Physician-in

Woolsorters' disease was a feared industrial disease associated primarily with Yorkshire's textile industry of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Early occupational health methods were attempted locally before concerted national efforts produced legislative measures. When its link with anthrax was established, attention in prevention focused upon chemical disinfection methods. Together, these factors were instrumental in decreasing the incidence of woolsorters' disease. However, by the beginning of the Second World War, the lack of treatment options for anthrax meant that the bacter
