Improvements in visual acuity and macular morphology following cessation of anti-estrogen drugs in a patient with anti-estrogen maculopathy resembling macular telangiectasia type 2: a pathogenic hypothesis.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between anti-estrogen drugs and macular telangiectasia type 2 (MacTel-2) remains unknown. Here we report a case with anti-estrogen maculopathy resembling MacTel-2 with improved visual function and macular morphology following cessation of anti-estrogen drugs. CASE PRESENTATION: A 53-year-old woman presented with a 5-month history of central vision loss and anorthopia in both eyes. She had received oral tamoxifen followed by toremifene for 69 months. Funduscopy, fluorescein angiography, and optical coherence tomography (OCT) revealed MacTel-2-like findings OU. Fund

Why do patients with improved visual acuity drop out of RGP contact lens use? Ten-year follow-up results in patients with scarred corneas.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the long-term results of rigid gas permeable (RGP) contact lenses and to investigate the reasons for patient dissatisfaction with this therapy. METHODS: Records of 17 patients (20 eyes) who started using RGP contact lenses for correction of irregular astigmatism due to scarred corneas between 1995 and 1996 were evaluated retrospectively. Best-corrected visual acuities with or without RGP contact lenses were noted. The mean duration of contact lens use, reasons for discontinuation of therapy, and treatment methods preferred over contact lens use were evaluated. RESULTS: T

Ocular Safety and Visual Acuity Stability in Pediatric Patients With Optic Pathway Gliomas and Orbital Plexiform Neurofibromas Treated With BRAF and MEK Inhibitors.

BACKGROUND: BRAF and MEK inhibitors targeting the RAS/MAPK pathway are increasingly used in pediatric oncology, particularly for gliomas and neurofibromatosis type 1-associated plexiform neurofibromas (PN). While ocular adverse events (OAE), such as uveitis and MEK inhibitor-associated retinopathy (MEKAR), are well documented in adults, pediatric data remain limited, as are data regarding the effect on visual acuity (VA) in optic pathway gliomas (OPG) and orbital plexiform neurofibromas (OPN). METHODS: This retrospective study reviewed pediatric patients treated with BRAF and/or MEK inhibitor

Lumbar tactile acuity associated with S1-thalamic functional connectivity and S1 microstructure in patients with low back pain and pain-free controls.

Impairments in lumbar sensory perception, including reduced tactile acuity, occur in patients with nonspecific low back pain (LBP). Tactile acuity is linked to primary somatosensory cortex (S1) activity and structure, but neural markers of lumbar-specific tactile acuity tests remain unvalidated. This cross-sectional study investigated associations between lumbar two-point discrimination (TPD) and estimation (TPE) with functional and structural properties of S1, as well as S1-thalamic connectivity. Resting-state functional MRI and diffusion-weighted MRI assessed S1-thalamic functional connectiv

Best-Corrected Visual Acuity Quantitative Prediction for Cataract Patients: AI-Assisted Clinical Diagnostics Facilitation via the Inverse Problem Algorithm.

Objective: This study provided a quantitative prediction of best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) for cataract patients using the inverse problem algorithm (IPA) technique earlier proposed by the authors. Methods: To this end, seven risk factors (age, BMI, MAP, IOP, HbA1c, LDL-C, and gender) were linked by a semi-empirical formula by normalizing each factor into a dimensionless range of -1.0 to +1.0. The adopted inverse problem algorithm (IPA) technique was run via a self-developed program in STATISTICA 7.0, featuring a 29-term nonlinear equation considering seven risk factors, cross-interaction

Effect of photodynamic therapy with verteporfin on tumor thickness and best corrected visual acuity in patients with circumscribed choroidal hemangioma: a single-center experience.

The management of circumscribed choroidal hemangioma (CCH) with photodynamic therapy (PDT) using verteporfin has resulted in significant functional and clinical improvement compared with the pre-PDT era. Literature data on factors influencing clinical outcomes and predictors of response to PDT in symptomatic CCH are inconsistent. The aim of this study was to investigate the efficacy of PDT with verteporfin in patients with CCH depending on symptom duration and tumor thickness at baseline. We analyzed the medical records of 37 patients with symptomatic CCH divided into 3 groups according to sym

Knee muscle strength and visual acuity are the most important modifiable predictors of falls in patients after hip fracture surgery: a prospective study.

Our purpose was to identify risk factors for falls among older adults who had recently undergone hip fracture surgery. The subjects in this study were 69 older adults (aged 65 years or more) who had sustained a hip fracture and were admitted to an orthopedic rehabilitation ward after surgery. Potential fall risk factors were assessed using the physiological profile assessment, timed-up-and-go test, berg balance test, and activities-specific balance confidence scale at discharge from the hospital. Each individual was followed for a period of 6 months to obtain information on the incidence of fa
