Spatial patterns of intestinal parasite infections among children and adolescents in some indigenous communities in Argentina.

Argentina has a heterogeneous prevalence of infections by intestinal parasites (IPs), with the north in the endemic area, especially for soil-transmitted helminths (STHs). We analyzed the spatial patterns of these infections in the city of Tartagal, Salta province, by an observational, correlational, and cross-sectional study in children and adolescents aged 1 to 15 years from native communities. One fecal sample per individual was collected to detect IPs using various diagnostic techniques: Telemann sedimentation, Baermann culture, and Kato-Katz. Moran's global and local indices were applied

A benchmark for computational analysis of animal behavior, using animal-borne tags.

BACKGROUND: Animal-borne sensors ('bio-loggers') can record a suite of kinematic and environmental data, which are used to elucidate animal ecophysiology and improve conservation efforts. Machine learning techniques are used for interpreting the large amounts of data recorded by bio-loggers, but there exists no common framework for comparing the different machine learning techniques in this domain. This makes it difficult to, for example, identify patterns in what works well for machine learning-based analysis of bio-logger data. It also makes it difficult to evaluate the effectiveness of nove

Mouse tissue glycome atlas 2022 highlights inter-organ variation in major N-glycan profiles.

This study presents "mouse tissue glycome atlas" representing the profiles of major N-glycans of mouse glycoproteins that may define their essential functions in the surface glycocalyx of mouse organs/tissues and serum-derived extracellular vesicles (exosomes). Cell surface glycocalyx composed of a variety of N-glycans attached covalently to the membrane proteins, notably characteristic "N-glycosylation patterns" of the glycocalyx, plays a critical role for the regulation of cell differentiation, cell adhesion, homeostatic immune response, and biodistribution of secreted exosomes. Given that t

Diagnosing the spatiotemporal evolution of anthropogenic CO2 emission drivers in China under systemic disruptions using interpretable machine learning.

Understanding how anthropogenic CO2 emissions (ACE) respond to large-scale systemic disruptions is essential for climate mitigation and environmental management. Here, we develop an interpretable machine learning framework that integrates an XGBoost model with SHAP (SHapley Additive exPlanations) to diagnose how the key drivers of the ACE inventory's spatiotemporal variability evolved in mainland China, using the COVID-19 period as a natural experiment. The framework reliably reproduces spatial and temporal patterns of the inventory and enables systematic diagnostic analysis of predictor impor

Identification of hemodynamic biomarkers for bicuspid aortic valve induced aortic dilation using machine learning.

Recent advances in medical imaging have confirmed the presence of altered hemodynamics in bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) patients. Therefore, there is a need for new hemodynamic biomarkers to refine disease monitoring and improve patient risk stratification. This research aims to analyze and extract multiple correlation patterns of hemodynamic parameters from 4D Flow MRI data and find which parameters allow an accurate classification between healthy volunteers (HV) and BAV patients with dilated and non-dilated ascending aorta using machine learning. Sixteen hemodynamic parameters were calculated

An Automated Classification of Pathological Gait Using Unobtrusive Sensing Technology.

This paper integrates an unobtrusive and affordable sensing technology with machine learning methods to discriminate between healthy and pathological gait patterns as a result of stroke or acquired brain injury. A feature analysis is used to identify the role of each body part in separating pathological patterns from healthy patterns. Gait features, including the orientations of the hips and spine (trunk), shoulders and neck (upper limb), knees and ankles (lower limb), are calculated during walking based on Kinect skeletal tracking sequences. Sequences of these features during three types of w

Automatic assessment of mitral regurgitation severity based on extensive textural features on 2D echocardiography videos.

Heart disease is the major cause of death as well as a leading cause of disability in the developed countries. Mitral Regurgitation (MR) is a common heart disease which does not cause symptoms until its end stage. Therefore, early diagnosis of the disease is of crucial importance in the treatment process. Echocardiography is a common method of diagnosis in the severity of MR. Hence, a method which is based on echocardiography videos, image processing techniques and artificial intelligence could be helpful for clinicians, especially in borderline cases. In this paper, we introduce novel feature

Gene targeting in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis using causality-based feature selection and machine learning.

BACKGROUND: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a rare progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects upper and lower motor neurons. As the molecular basis of the disease is still elusive, the development of high-throughput sequencing technologies, combined with data mining techniques and machine learning methods, could provide remarkable results in identifying pathogenetic mechanisms. High dimensionality is a major problem when applying machine learning techniques in biomedical data analysis, since a huge number of features is available for a limited number of samples. The aim of this

Simplifying rehabilitation control of lower-limb exoskeletons in five ambulation modes via dataset-driven state-machine calibration.

BACKGROUND: Lower-limb exoskeletons are a useful tool in rehabilitation settings as they can provide customized assistance to individuals during functional exercises. These approaches typically rely on state-machine-based control with impedance controllers tailored to different locomotion phases, ensuring appropriate assistance across various activities and environments. However, these methods necessitate lengthy calibration procedures, as many impedance parameters need to be fine-tuned to provide appropriate assistance for various activities (e.g., overground walking, ramps, and stairs). An Application of Machine Learning in Pharmacovigilance: Estimating Likely Patient Genotype From Phenotypical Manifestations of Fluoropyrimidine Toxicity.

Dihydropyrimidine dehydrogenase (DPD)-deficient patients might only become aware of their genotype after exposure to dihydropyrimidines, if testing is performed. Case reports to pharmacovigilance databases might only contain phenotypical manifestations of DPD, without information on the genotype. This poses a difficulty in estimating the cases due to DPD. Auto machine learning models were developed to train patterns of phenotypical manifestations of toxicity, which were then used as a surrogate to estimate the number of cases of DPD-related toxicity. Results indicate that between 8,878 (7.0%)

Tool wear mechanism in ultrasonic-assisted grinding of SiCf/SiC composites.

Under severe cooling conditions, machining SiCf/SiC composites leads to pronounced tool wear, compromising machining efficiency. While ultrasonic-assisted grinding (UAG) demonstrates potential for enhancing surface quality, the wear characteristics of grinding tools in this process remain insufficiently characterized. This study employs tribological and kinematic analysis coupled with experimental verification to elucidate wear mechanisms. Results identify four principal wear modes: abrasive wear, fracture wear, grain detachment, and wheel clogging, involving both two-body and three-body wear.
