Protection from radiation-induced colitis requires MHC class II antigen expression by cells of hemopoietic origin.

Ulcerative colitis, an inflammatory bowel disease, is believed to result from a breakdown of dominant tolerance mechanisms that normally control intestinal immunity. Although CD4+ T lymphocyte subpopulations and expression of MHC class II molecules have been shown to play a role in the pathogenesis of the disease, the nature of the responsible mechanisms remains unclear. In this paper we describe a novel mouse model for inflammatory bowel disease, radiation-induced colitis, that occurs with complete penetrance 6-8 wk postinduction. A combination of high dose gamma-irradiation and lack of MHC c

Solar radiation, lip protection, and lip cancer risk in Los Angeles County women (California, United States).

A population-based case-control study of 74 women with lip cancer diagnosed from 1978 to 1985 in Los Angeles County (California, United States) and frequency matched to 105 controls investigated the risk of solar radiation and protection from lip sunscreening agents to explore the hypothesis that excess incidence of lip cancer seen in men is due partly to lower rates in women, conferred by frequent use of lip protection. We confirm the importance in women of risk factors similar to those found in men, i.e., fair complexion, sun exposure, and smoking. Risk was related strongly to lifetime solar

Sunscreens: topical and systemic approaches for protection of human skin against harmful effects of solar radiation.

This review deals with topical and systemic approaches for protection of human skin against the harmful effects of solar radiation. Two concerns about the deleterious effects of sun exposure involve: (1) acute effects (e.g., sunburn and drug-induced phototoxicity) and (2) potential long-term risks of repeated sun exposures leading to development of solar elastosis, keratoses, induction of both nonmelanoma and melanoma skin cancer, and alteration of immune responses and functions. Action spectra of normal and abnormal reactions of human skin to acute and chronic effects of solar radiation are p

Optimizing inspection intensity under the graded approach: a Bayesian decision-theoretic model for radiation protection regulation.

The graded approach is a central principle of radiation protection regulation: regulatory requirements and oversight activities should be commensurate with the radiation risks associated with practices involving radiation sources. Although the principle is widely accepted, its practical implementation often relies on qualitative categories, expert judgement and institutional routines rather than an explicit decision model. This paper develops a Bayesian decision-theoretic formulation of inspection intensity under the graded approach. Regulated practices are represented by uncertain latent safe

First evaluation of wearable radiation protection for human deep space exploration, as flown on Artemis I.

With preparations underway for extended-duration crewed deep space missions, the health risks of solar particle events (SPEs) to astronauts are becoming increasingly pertinent. To address this hazard, the AstroRad vest, a personal radiation shielding garment providing targeted organ protection, was tested during Artemis I. Two anthropomorphic female phantoms, equipped with internal and external passive and active dosimeters, were flown aboard the Orion spacecraft: one unshielded and the other wearing AstroRad. Inner Van Allen belt transit active dosimeter measurements were extrapolated to simu

A Ternary Flavonoid Formulation Mitigates Fractional Radiation-Induced Brain Injury via Transcriptomic Reprogramming and Synaptic Protection.

UNLABELLED: Fractional ionizing radiation (FIR) is a standard cancer therapy but often induces severe central nervous system complications, including cognitive decline and physiological dysfunction. While natural flavonoids hold therapeutic promise for radiation-induced brain injury (RIBI), optimizing their combinations and elucidating the underlying molecular pathways remain challenging. METHODS: To develop a precise therapeutic strategy, we first integrated network pharmacology and UHPLC-Q-Orbitrap MS/MS analysis to identify three highly effective flavonoid monomers from a radioprotective b

Comparative Study of Histone Deacetylase Inhibitors for Radiation Protection Using Survival Outcomes in a Mouse Model.

Histone deacetylases (HDACs) regulate chromatin structure and gene expression, and their inhibition has been proposed as a radioprotective strategy. However, few studies have compared multiple HDAC inhibitors (HDACis) under identical conditions. This study evaluated the efficacy of seven HDACis in a mouse total body irradiation (TBI) model. Male ICR mice received 7.5 Gy TBI followed by a single administration of valproic acid (VPA; 300 or 600 mg/kg), sodium butyrate (NaB; 500 or 1000 mg/kg), trichostatin A (TSA; 0.5 or 1.0 mg/kg), vorinostat (10 or 50 mg/kg), panobinostat (25 or 50 mg/kg), giv

X-ray spectrometry for calculating conversion coefficients from air kerma to operational quantities in radiation protection.

This study explores the conversion coefficients from air kerma to operational quantities for radiation protection, using x-ray spectrometry for the narrow-beam qualities below 300 keV as defined by ISO 4037-1. By employing custom spectral correction algorithms combined with modern cadmium telluride (CdTe) semiconductor detectors, we effectively corrected spectral distortions caused by detection processes, ensuring more reliable measurements. These measurements are crucial for meeting radiation protection standards. The study also analyses the sources of uncertainty associated with the determin

Evaluation of the radiation protection effectiveness of a lead-free homopolymer in cone beam computed tomography.

OBJECTIVE: The objective was to compare the radiation protection effectiveness of a lead-free thermoplastic homopolymer (Anti-RAD) to conventional lead shielding in cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) exposures. STUDY DESIGN: Thermoluminescent dosimeters were placed on a human bone- and soft tissue-equivalent phantom to record equivalent doses in the thyroid gland, thyroid skin, and breast areas. CBCT images were obtained with the following 3 protocols: (1) without radiation shielding; (2) with 0.5-mm lead equivalent lead-containing shielding; and (3) with 0.5-mm lead equivalent Anti-RAD shi

Low-dose radiation exposure and protection against atherosclerosis in ApoE(-/-) mice: the influence of P53 heterozygosity.

We recently described the effects of low-dose γ-radiation exposures on atherosclerosis in genetically susceptible (ApoE(-/-)) mice with normal p53 function. Doses as low as 25 mGy, given at either early or late stage disease, generally protected against atherosclerosis in a manner distinctly nonlinear with dose. We now report the influence of low doses (25-500 mGy) on atherosclerosis in ApoE(-/-) mice with reduced p53 function (Trp53(+/-)). Single exposures were given at either low or high dose rate (1 or 150 mGy/min) to female C57BL/6J ApoE(-/-) Trp53(+/-) mice. Mice were exposed at either ea

All about FAX: a Female Adult voXel phantom for Monte Carlo calculation in radiation protection dosimetry.

The International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) has created a task group on dose calculations, which, among other objectives, should replace the currently used mathematical MIRD phantoms by voxel phantoms. Voxel phantoms are based on digital images recorded from scanning of real persons by computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Compared to the mathematical MIRD phantoms, voxel phantoms are true to the natural representations of a human body. Connected to a radiation transport code, voxel phantoms serve as virtual humans for which equivalent dose to organs and t

All about MAX: a male adult voxel phantom for Monte Carlo calculations in radiation protection dosimetry.

The MAX (Male Adult voXel) phantom has been developed from existing segmented images of a male adult body, in order to achieve a representation as close as possible to the anatomical properties of the reference adult male specified by the ICRP. The study describes the adjustments of the soft-tissue organ masses, a new dosimetric model for the skin, a new model for skeletal dosimetry and a computational exposure model based on coupling the MAX phantom with the EGS4 Monte Carlo code. Conversion coefficients between equivalent dose to the red bone marrow as well as effective MAX dose and air-kerm

Broad-spectrum sunscreens offer protection against urocanic acid photoisomerization by artificial ultraviolet radiation in human skin.

Cis-urocanic acid (UCA) has been indicated as an important mediator of ultraviolet (UV)-induced immunosuppression. In this study we describe a rapid, noninvasive method for the determination of the protective capacity of various sunscreens against the UV-induced isomerization of trans-UCA into its cis form. For this purpose we applied sunscreens prior to in vivo exposure of human volunteers with single or repeated broadband UVB irradiations of 100 mJ per cm2. We found significant but different levels of protection against UCA photoisomerization by all sunscreens that correlated with the sun pr

Dosimetric and radiation protection considerations based on some cases of patient skin injuries in interventional cardiology.

Recently, several cases of skin injuries have been detected in patients undergoing cardiac radiofrequency catheter ablation. These procedures were performed on a biplane X-ray system used in a large Spanish hospital for interventional cardiology procedures. Interventional procedures performed and radiation lesions produced on patients are described. The radiation lesions were mainly erythematous lesions and chronic radiodermatitis. Results of the dosimetric evaluations and an analysis of the operational aspects of radiological protection are discussed. Poor image quality could have influenced

Effect of omental pedicle hammock in protection against radiation-induced enteropathy in patients with rectal cancer.

PURPOSE: The aim of this nonrandomized study was to assess effects against radiation-induced enteropathy by constructing an omental pedicle hammock, thus isolating the small bowel outside the pelvis. METHODS: Since 1991, 32 patients received the omental pedicle hammock procedure as an adjunct to definitive cancer surgery, and the perioperative experiences and toxic effects of radiation therapy were evaluated and compared with 25 patients who received pelvic floor reperitonealization only. RESULTS: There were no surgical complications related to the omental hammock procedure. Contrary to cont

Protection of normal tissue from the cytotoxic effects of chemotherapy and radiation by amifostine: clinical experiences.

The clinical trials described in this review indicate that amifostine protects normal tissues from the toxicities of various antitumour regimens. In a controlled trial, pretreatment with amifostine reduced the frequency of cyclophosphamide-induced neutropenia. Comparisons of the effects of cisplatin with and without pretreatment with amifostine indicated that patients pretreated with amifostine had fewer nephrotoxic and neurotoxic effects and tolerated higher doses of cisplatin before the onset of neurotoxic effects. In a randomised trial, patients who received amifostine prior to treatment wi

Prophylactically Feeding Manganese to Drosophila Confers Sex-Specific Protection from Acute Ionizing Radiation Independent of MnSOD2 Levels.

Ionizing radiation is a health threat to many, including warfighters, radiological emergency responders, radiotherapy patients, and astronauts. Despite this, no FDA-approved prophylactic medical countermeasures exist to attenuate the symptoms that occur from radiation exposure. Manganese has recently been shown to be critical for radioresistance in a wide range of organisms. In this study, we designed a stringent feeding method to test the prophylactic effects of dietary manganese on Drosophila's lifespan before exposure to acute irradiation. We found that male flies have substantially lower r
