Retinal detachment in highly myopic eyes due to macular holes and epiretinal traction.

We operated on four highly myopic eyes with recurrent retinal detachment due to macular holes. A thin layer of epiretinal tissue was present over the posterior retina in each eye, probably causing tangential traction on the retina and accounting for the recurrent detachment. Biopsy of the tissue from one case showed mainly acellular material resembling cortical vitreous. Recognizing this clinical condition may permit successful treatment of certain cases with recurrent retinal detachment in highly myopic eyes with macular holes.

Surgical treatment of retinal detachment from macular hole.

Six cases of retinal detachment from the macular hole were treated by a procedure including closed vitrectomy, air-fluid exchange, and prone positioning of the patient. All of these detachments were of the idiopathic type. Five patients had myopia ranging from -13 to -20 diopters; one was emmetropic. The initial success rate can be considered 100%: in all six cases the retina remained attached during follow-up periods ranging from 4-10 months at least. One later recurrence was not caused by the macular hole. This new technique, which allows permanent releasing of vitreous traction and temporar

Indications for vitrectomy in congenital retinoschisis.

Two patients with congenital retinoschisis developed rhegmatogenous retinal detachments with either a tractional component or associated vitreous haemorrhage. The second patient also had a large, raised schisis cavity under vitreous traction, which obscured visualisation of the macula. Vitrectomy is indicated for some patients with congenital retinoschisis.

Inadvertent intraocular injection of botulinum toxin A.

This report describes an inadvertent perforation of the globe while injecting botulinum toxin A into the medial rectus muscle without electromyography guidance. Botulinum toxin A does not appear to have toxic effects on the human retina. Close observation and necessary measures to treat any retinal breaks and control increased intraocular pressure should be undertaken.

Full-thickness macular hole and macular telangiectasia in a child with Coats' disease.

A 9-year-old boy presented with a 6-month history of decreased vision in his left eye. The patient's retinal examination was significant for telangiectatic vessels involving the posterior pole and the superior and inferior post-equatorial regions, circinate intraretinal exudation at the macula, and a full-thickness macular hole that was confirmed by optical coherence tomography. Chronic exudation from the anomalous vessels may be involved in the pathogenesis. Full-thickness macular hole formation may occur in conjunction with Coats' disease in children, which has not been reported to date, to

Posterior segment manifestations of ocular trauma.

Nonpenetrating or blunt ocular trauma, orbital trauma and systemic trauma may cause a variety of posterior segment abnormalities. Blunt ocular trauma may cause damage to the retina (commotio retinae), retinal pigment epithelium (retinal pigment epithelial edema), choroid (choroidal rupture) and optic nerve (optic nerve evulsion) alone or in combination. Traumatic macular holes and retinal detachment or dialysis may also occur after blunt ocular trauma. Trauma to the orbital tissues adjacent to the globe can cause concussive forces with damage to multiple structures within the eye (chorioretini

Coincidental retinal dysplasia in patients presenting with pseudohypopyon: a series of two cases.

Clinical diagnosis is always challenging in cases with atypical presentation. Herein, we present two cases which masqueraded as ocular infection/inflammation on presentation, were clinically suspicious for retinoblastoma, and histopathology revealed the diagnosis of retinal dysplasia. Case 1 had left corneal perforation with anterior chamber exudates on presentation. On ultrasound B-scan, ill-defined mass was noted, raising a suspicion of malignancy. MRI showed dilated ventricles with midline shift. Vitreous cytology was inconclusive. Enucleation was performed as malignancy could not be ruled

Optical Coherence Tomography Findings in Spontaneous Full-thickness Macular Hole Closure.

Spontaneous closure (SC) of a macular hole (MH) is a rare but well-documented phenomenon, particularly in small, early-stage holes. The exact mechanisms underlying SC remain unclear, but it is hypothesized to involve the interplay of vitreoretinal dynamics, glial cell proliferation, and the natural healing processes of the retina. Our study reports clinical features of two cases of full-thickness MHs (FTMHs) that closed spontaneously under different circumstances, as well as their optical coherence tomography (OCT) characteristics and effect on visual acuity, thus emphasizing the role of OCT i

Macular hole with inner limiting membrane peeling off spontaneously in Terson syndrome: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Terson's syndrome with inner limiting membrane (ILM) peeled off spontaneously is rarely seen, and the mechanism of it is not clear. Here we report a case of Terson Syndrome with a rare finding: the ILM peeled off spontaneously associated with macular hole (MH). PATIENT CONCERNS: A 36-year-old female patient was admitted to our hospital with decreased visual acuity in the right eye lasting for 1 month. She just had surgery for subarachnoid hemorrhage that occurred 1 month before due to the rupture of the intracranial aneurysm. DIAGNOSIS: Terson syndrome was diagnosed according t

Bilateral simultaneous stage 1 macular hole.

The authors describe two cases of bilateral simultaneous stage 1 macular hole diagnosed via optical coherence tomography (OCT). Vitreomacular traction, foveal pseudo cysts, and outer retinal changes were present initially. Resolution of the foveal pseudo cysts and outer retinal changes occurred in cases where a complete posterior vitreous detachment was noted. The initial step in the pathogenesis of macular holes is "traction" from the detaching posterior hyaloid. However, there are missing links in the exact inciting events and in the progression of the disease. The development of bilateral s
